Join Anna and Alf today as they visit DINAS DINNLE IRON AGE COASTAL HILLFORT in LLANDWROG NORTH WALES, UK as they walk around the top of the hillfort while Anna teaches some history and tells of what was found buried here after excavations were undertaken by GWYNEDD ARCHEOLOGICAL TRUST, WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH CADW, THE NATIONAL TRUST ( which owns the land ) AONB SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FUND and CHERISH PROJECT ( which is an EU funded project that is examining the impact of climate change on heritage sites found along the coasts of Wales and Ireland)
Amongst what was found here was a ROMANO BRITISH ' ROUNDHOUSE' which is thought to be the BIGGEST ROUNDHOUSE IN WALES that has been buried in sand until now and the plan was to fully preserve this roundhouse and leave it open so that people may appreciate the scale of coastal erosion that is occurring here. Basically this site was allowed to be excavated before it falls into the sea.
Apart from its archaeological interest,the hillfort area at DINAS DINLLE also offers literary interest as it was mentioned in the Welsh folk tales, THE MABINOGION.
It also attracts geologists because of it being an SSSI ( SITE OF SPECIAL SCIENTIFIC INTEREST ) for the importance of its glacial drift and sediments, known as a ' moraine'

It certainly fascinates me to think of the people who have lived and built these structures so long ago. The lush picturesque hills of Wales are a treasure trove of ancient history. In answer to your question about why round houses, well for any given amount of material, a circle allows the maximum floor area. It also greatly simplifies roof design and erection, which then minimise s material requirements. It also allows a single, central, hearth, and if present, a smoke hole. So clever🙂
We loved that the sheep / lambs were congregated right near that roundhouse, they were so cute.

We enjoyed visiting this lovely and historical sight with you Anna and Alf. It's a beautiful coastal area and I could also see besides the views why it would make a strategically great defensive position of the area. I enjoyed seeing the ruins that remain and what archaeologists have brought back to life. It's great that it's preserved now and we enjoyed hearing the history. We're as attracted to it as much as the sheep! 🤣🤣It is sad that because of rising sea's, that some important parts may become lost to future generations. Always love the shoe cameos! It all sounds so bad, and that's awful that you can't find your wedding ring. I will be praying that you find it and that these workers are more considerate. Its the same in our country, when we bought our new house, men came to carpet it, and broke an expensive picture in our hallway and you know what they did ? The foundation of the round house is so wide. I'm surprised they allow you to walk on it. The view from the top is absolutely beautiful. Very informational video. Well done Anna👍👍

Hello Anna. Such a wonderful exploration of Dinas Dinnle Iron Age coastal hillfort! Very nice costal area. Great views of the surrounding mountains, beach, fields and animals. So amazing to see the ruins emerging out of the ground. Magnificent archaeological find and monuments.

Absolutely loved this video, Anna! The history you uncovered at Dinas Dinlle is amazing, and the roundhouse is particularly fascinating. It's amazing to imagine the people who lived there thousands of years ago. It's sad to hear about the erosion threatening the site, but hopefully projects like Cherish can help preserve it.
