It was very generous of them to expose their problems in a movie.
Well he isnt mad about it, he defends them in interviews and they let him do the unboxing for the black albums 30th anniversary.so I'm going to guess this was just a tough time for the band and him leaving just made it tougher.

When I was a kid learning to play, Ulrich was one of the drummers I looked up to most. He wasn't anywhere near as good as Dave Lombardo or Igor Cavalerra, but he was solid and dependable.Today, his playing is sometimes so dodgy Metallica would be better off with a fucking drum machine.

They did it out of respect for Cliff's parents and to get their blessing, as Jason would be stepping into Cliff's role and playing his music. You have to remember that its not an easy decision to make to continue a band after losing a band member.

Most dont like Lars but he is very very dedicated to the band. Its literally part of his soul at this point.

Lars was never worthy of that success, he just coat tails off others who make greatness.
