No wonder why Mustaine got booted from the band. Could you imagine if Kirk wasn't there and it was Mustaine as the third guy in a conversation like this? Dave had way too much of a extrovert personality to last even if he wasnt a drunk back in the day.
@delreydavid They didn't bicker like this all the time early on. Dave was already an angry, violent drunk when he joined Metallica, and it's what got him booted from the band.
James and lars : * Arguing * Kirk :Rob? Rob : Yeah? Kirk : Are james and lars getting a divorce Rob : * Sigh * I-i don't know buddy we'll figure it out in the morning Kirk : okay
4:20 Lars is actually trying right here. I agree 100% that it should never have to be just one choice and the rest is fucked. There's always wiggle room when it comes to compromise and the problem we all have as people is that we like to make things more complicated to others because to us,having things a certain way is easier to us which isn't exactly fair to anyone else involved in your life and that's when self reflection has to take hold otherwise, nobody will grow to become adaptive and willing to learn and possibly grow.
Should have brought Dave Mustaine into the room... Then you'd have the trifecta of issues. But I guess 20-30 years of letting shit slide, only stores it in the cupboard until someone opens the door.
I remember when this documentary came out many fans and people were half puzzled and half joking about watching Metallica going to therapy. It sounded like a comedy sketch from Saturday Night live. Now, years later everyone needs to recognise that this documentary made a lot for men's mental health. If people as hardcore as Metallica can talk openly about their feelings, why can't all the men in these world.
6:07 Bob is having a serious talk with the rest of the band about how after working with the band for years he still can't feel comfortable calling them his friends. Meanwhile the camera crew is filming Lars pacing around a fucking ping pong table cooling off after his little conniption to the sound of the loudest pair of track pants on planet earth.
He won't call them friends because they pay him very very very well. And well deserved by bob..can I ask you a question? Why the hell is bob there anyway?

Lars: fighting James: fighting Kirk in his mind: “what’s for dinner?” *giving himself trivia on horror facts* *breaking down their arguments in his head*
after watching this again i realized that how people like Lars are actually needed for a band. He is absolutely right when says to James that he shows up late then it's supposed to and James knows it too. everybody accuses Lars with being greedy, showman-ish, etc. but somebody has to deal with band's non-music related stuff and Lars just does that perfectly imho.
James Imposes a 4 hour window of WORK because of HIS problem. Doesn't want to take ownership of it. He shows up late. When he gets called out for it says IN THE PAST you showed up late. Totally not owning if it did happen in the past it wasn't when somebody imposed a 4 hour work window on the band. No wonder Dave Mustaine Kicked James ass.

Everyone in the comments really doesn't understand what was going on, they lack the empathy. When James said "I'm more important than Metallica" he saw his normal life slipping away, he loved his wife and kids and hated the man he became because he was an alcoholic. He needed to work on his issues in his life and was saying "hey right now I need to work on myself." Lars was frustrated because he was losing something that he is proud of, he created this huge metal band that will never be forgotten and at that point in time he thought it may just end. He had been with James from day one and he thought he would lose him. They both were just hurt and were expressing their points of view. I do think Lars should have allowed James to figure out his life's problems without pushing to make an album and if Kirk and Lars were not willing to wait they should have asked James to leave. In retrospect this was actually handled very well, James got the help he needed and they made the album regardless.
Agreed. James was going off the cliff to get himself together and he expects his long time friends to understand. Lars basically threw a two year tantrum about how he has always felt less-than in the band and in the friendship and he didn’t want to let it continue since it wasn’t him that was stopping the band to get it together. In my mind, this is AMAZING stuff and this band means everything to these guys! Most bands would just implode. Most bands break up rather than fight it out and come to love and understand each other and continue on. Granted, this band was/is a huge machine that a lot of people rely on for a living but still, the spirit of rock n roll has always been to implode. These guys broke the mold for a minute in time by hiring the therapist to assist them and get to the root causes of their problems and work it out. This man earned his money in this gig. Without his efforts, it’s possible that Metallica would have been done for. Then in walks Rob and they go on to make the best music as a unit since MOP.. 💯🙏
I think not. Urlich is feeling excatly this: 2:33 , he have a good moral compass. Hetfield is used to playing with others so he can get what he want. Lars is respecting others but always being frustreded BECAUSE no one give him this credit back, he is not self-centric jerk like James. Lars also have life but no one cares about what he is feel. And now look at this: Lars is being himself all the time, he is honest being truth even if somebody with not agreed with him. He must play this fuc*king star all the time. #teamlars #respecting #rules
@@czernm20 EXACTLY. When he says that Metallica and family duties can coexist, Hetfield just blew him off with a shitty ass response like Lars working 8 hours on a Metallica project means that Lars doesn't give a shit about his family. @Luke Bargowski when you're going through a lot of unhealty and bad attitudes by your bandmates, you don't pay attention to the things that you will loose if you leave, you have to do what is best for your self no matter the success or fame that you could get.
I wish Axl, Slash and Duff had done this back in 1995. GNR broke up for 19 years because of resentment like this. Lars and James spoke about their feeling rather keeping it all inside.
Everyone ripping on Lars for his whining should understand that he's the only reason the band still exists. He was the only one not afraid to be honest, even if he was insulting James. By being brutally honest with James, they were able to overcome their breakdown in communication and rebuild their relationship. Unfortunately for GNR, Axl never seemed to want to do this.
Lars was not wrong about the lack of interest in other people's desires. But James was sticking to his guns to get through his sobriety. Tough situation. I was fascinated with this when it came out and remain so to this day. Excellent documentary. In all honesty, these guys should be commended for putting in real work with this effort at such a late stage in life. You can tell that they're really trying to access their authenticity. That's harder than it seems unless you've spent time on the couch. The pressure of where they were in their careers and the stunted growth that comes with celebrity...it's honestly a miracle that this conversation even happened, let a lone for 1.5 years.
"When you sit here for 8 hours, and dont go home, i think he dosent give a shit about his Family" Eeeehm James, i hate to tell you this...all non rockstar people Work for 8 hours every day, and still care for their Family.
Old comment but I'll reply anyways. I think he was referring to being in a studio voluntarily instead of being with his family. Their circumstances are a little different. They can choose to either be in the studio or be with their family, it's not an actual JOB.
Lars said "if that's what it takes." He was referring to the effort you have to put in to make a quality record, not that he does not give a shit about his family. Why would that be a huge concern for James? It is not about "choosing to be in the studio." It is about the sacrifices of time in the studio to make quality music. Has anybody here had experiences with an alcoholic? My sister is one (over 1 year sober now) and they are extremely difficult to deal with, drunk or sober. It is amazing how the Hetfield fanboys still defend him to the bitter end and try to blame it all on Lars and Jason.
@@MrParkerman6 it's a proven fact that if you have to use "dumbass" twice in one comment that you in fact are the true dumbass. I await your response in which you say "but you just used it twice!!1!1!!1".

Lars wouldn't still be in the band if Cliff was still alive. Or else Cliff would have left them for greener pastures. The man just had a way with music that surpassed the rest (perhaps not James, but certainly Kirk and Lars).
...or he would be open by any means to get the band communicate with each other again??? I'm not so sure that slapping people is always the best way to get people to get along...
I do think Cliff would have left the band around the time of the Black Album. Cliff reminds me of Terry Kath from Chicago. Sure, most would agree that Chicago went adult contemporary after Kath died, but anyone following Chicago's trajectory saw that they were treading down that path regardless of Kath's involvement. Lars and James were the primary songwriters of the group and the creative directors of Metallica. Burton would've likely called it quits when the band became more mainstream and abandoned the more avant garde style of thrash they played in the 80's. I think it was more likely that Cliff would've replaced Paul D'Amour in Tool than stayed in Metallica.

Daniel Treadwell Lars is a known d bag but James was seriously acting like a bitch in this time period. Telling Jason he can't do anything but Metallica. Then telling Lars he can't even listen to their recordings unless he's in the room with them. Fuck that. I think the overwhelming success and money that came from the Black Album was a big part of why his attitude changed, and obviously the alcohol as well, but thankfully they all seem to have straightened everything out now. I've enjoyed both of their last 2 albums.
It was James being a control freak which was always his main issue - the fear of losing control. Lars is not very diplomatic in this clip and his attitude clearly escalates the conflict but it's probably built up over a long period of time.
@@Momoa786 they're both that way in their own ways. Lars is the reason metallica even exists. Without him there is no metallica, that's why they respect him and hetfield hasn't punched his nose in.
I think that what motivated James and Lars to create Metallica were two different things. Lars wanted to be successful and famous and James was running away from a lot of unresolved problems and anger from his childhood....they just so happened to become the biggest metal band in history and spent 20 years on top of the world. This is basically James waking up at 40 from a dream that started when he was 20 and realizing all the problems he was running away from were made worse in those 2 decades if he didn’t make a big change in his priorities....and Lars subsequently wanting to keep the train running

I wanna say Rob was officially the first completely sober member but that’s probably not true because he used to be Ozzy’s bassist and Ozzy lost his mind.
@@worstghosthunting3466 I just saw an interview with Rob where he said him and Lars had been hitting the bottle hard the night before his audition. He also said he was hung over for the audition.
Yeah, imagine been kept from soloing in an album wich meant he couldn´t wrotte solos in over 9-10 years, the band you´re in is imploding, your leader is in bad shape rehabing, the band mannager is struggling to keep his shit together, there´s no bass player, the guy who produces the album is done with all that shit but is still the linkin point.
James saying Lars doesn't care about his family because he's willing to work 8-12 hours? Seriously, what world was James in here? He just described the schedule of every working family man that has ever existed.
True, but he has a choice. Us, regular folks, don't have millions on bank account that can give us freedom to work 4 hrs a day, or not work at all. So we have no choice but to work 8-10hrs a day, if we want to have food on table.
People who have to work 8 hours or more a day often complain later that they wish they could have spent more time with their little ones, watching them grow up. These guys equally spend months to a year on tour where they don't see their family at all. Yet most of all: They don't have to do that anymore. They became millionaires which could enjoy live without having to work for the rest of their lives, something everyone of us dreams about. So it's really a matter of "either or". Either you want to focus on your family or you want to continue on working on the legacy of Metallica. All the people here complaining about how James and Lars complain about their work time don't seem to get that compared to them we don't have a choice. They do. And it's even more astounding that they still decide to work then.
Trev Moran James was still doing rehab and therapy at this point. When you've spend maybe a total of a year with your family and the past three or four years. James point was after all the stuff he was going through or doing he just wanted to spend more time with his family. Can you honestly blame the guy?
Exactly hetfield was being a complete bitch this entire scene (and most of the movie) I'm so sick of people bitching about lars and praising James when James is more immature and selfish than Lars ever thought of being.
So James goes to rehab and comes out and has to come back to this. Most people would have ended up drinking by the end of the day after this conversation.
Seriously though lol most people judging James don't realize the shit he was actually going through at the time. People that have never been addicted to drugs/alcohol will hardly ever fully understand what goes through an addict's mind, especially after sobering up after many years of addiction. People dont realize your brain _physically changes_ once you're addicted, and it takes a LOT of work and time just to get back to square one. The longer you use, the harder it is to quit. And he was an alcoholic for well over a decade.
And i dont say that in a bad way..Thats what the treatement he went throught do to you.. Like Hetfield said many times: "They tear you down and build you back up." He kinda got stronger as the album(Stanger) got closer and closer to finish, but to me, he was never really the same after. And thats a good thing for him, i guess.
Watching this scene again many years after first seeing the doc, my main takeaway was that while Lars and James both had very defensible positions, no one in the room (including James and Lars themselves) seemed to have the skills to help them communicate their points of view in a way that could have led to some sort of compromise or better mutual understanding. Rock is trying, but it's pretty clear he doesn't know how to communicate something as simple as "If 4 hours isn't enough, can we come to an agreement that James would still be comfortable with and would get everyone closer to happy" or "Lars, what I'm hearing from James is that he's very vulnerable - he wants to do the band but needs to feel like you care about his wellbeing" etc etc And Phil Towle - jeez. What the band needed here was empathetic mediation to help solve a problem, not generic "how does that you feel" questions thrown out to James and Lars. Turns out the guy didn't even have any formal qualifications as a psychiatrist or psychologist - makes a lot of the scenes with him make a lot more sense on rewatching.
They were paying that huckster $40,000 a month. "We should honor the agreement the works not done. I have goals for all of you." Yeah, I bet you fucking do.
Towle was trying to instigate emotion out of them. It's poor tactic with people who are that fragile emotionally, but he's trying to get them to remove the filter. He wants them to say what they truly wanna say without holding back, but it's clearly not working. It starts to on Lars, but he gets more angry and upset with Phil prodding him than he does James who is clearly his real point of frustration. Also, at this point I think James, through his words and body language, makes it clear there was no compromise to be had right then. He wasn't backing down and if he had to insult, gaslight, shut down emotionally, or distract from that topic any way he could, he was going to. It's why he said "I'm more important than Metallica, and I'm sick of it being the other way around." I also think he felt that Lars genuinely didn't care about his progress and was just like "Yeah, lets get the album done and then we can..." and just kept pushing things off to get work done.
The temper tantrum Towle threw when they told him he was no longer needed told me all I needed to know about the guy. He gets paid a lot of money to sit around and spout off bullshit and when Metallica was done paying him to sit around to spout off bullshit, he threw a hissy fit.

after watching this again i realized that how people like Lars are actually needed for a band.
The thing is though, I really wish they could get somebody else to say it, because the only person that likes hearing Lars talk is Lars.
Then he should step aside and manage it and retire as a drummer but about 4 decades too late

100% agree. Although I would say it needed to occur in 1991 while Izzy was still present.

What they Don't show is james going in to check on Lars after he walked away and Lars thanked him for coming to check on him. The Book bye the Filmmakers is really Great , I've read it a few times
Old Danish saying, if you walk around a ping pong table it reduces stress...
Uncle Fester I thought that friction was gonna set his clothes on fire
Hvad!?
Ha ha ha ha ha
Im Danish and i have never heard that
🤣
ah yes the early 2000's when Hetfield used to dress like a car mechanic
kirks over there thinking “maybe jason had a point”
1:49 “You guys have issues”🤣🤣🤣 man I love Kirk
Poor Kirk he’s been in the band 2-3 less years than them and he always seems separate.
He is just not a drama queen and he doesn't care about this kind of stuff
He's doesn't have the mentality of a 15 year old like James and Lars do.
Imagine how Jason felt whenever he was in this mess. Fuck imagine how everyone was James was in rehab, pretty sure Lars had just got off of coke (might be wrong about the timing), Jason was addicted to pain killers and an alcohol, and Kirk had an alcohol and Heroine problem.
@@stinkyham9050 Oh shit I had no idea about that, that explains why they both kinda sound like they feel like shit
04:06 - Not that I'm a Lars fan in this, but that some truth right there.
Im a Lars fan. I find the dude absolutely hilarious plus he speaks facts when the rest cant figure shit out
1:40 Kirk: where the fock did I left my wha?
lmao
poor kirk looks miserable lol
he looks like my dog when I grab keys and head towards the door lol
Yeah, imagine been kept from soloing in an album wich meant he couldn´t wrotte solos in over 9-10 years, the band you´re in is imploding, your leader is in bad shape rehabing, the band mannager is struggling to keep his shit together, there´s no bass player, the guy who produces the album is done with all that shit but is still the linkin point.
@ Daniel reeve He was channeling his inner-George Harrison circa 1969 Let it Be Sessions...
He is too nice for crappy people in the comment section
3:30 Did Rob walk into the room with his bass on full blast?
James saying Lars doesn't care about his family because he's willing to work 8-12 hours? Seriously, what world was James in here? He just described the schedule of every working family man that has ever existed.
Sounds like a True Moron with that comment.
Funny how they have hired a therapist but Bob is the one doing all the therapy
So James goes to rehab and comes out and has to come back to this. Most people would have ended up drinking by the end of the day after this conversation.
🤣👍
Seriously though lol most people judging James don't realize the shit he was actually going through at the time. People that have never been addicted to drugs/alcohol will hardly ever fully understand what goes through an addict's mind, especially after sobering up after many years of addiction.
People dont realize your brain _physically changes_ once you're addicted, and it takes a LOT of work and time just to get back to square one. The longer you use, the harder it is to quit. And he was an alcoholic for well over a decade.
This scene was before he went to rehab.
@@MrParkerman6 No after..What you see here, is the new Hetfield version, all weak from the rehab process.
And i dont say that in a bad way..Thats what the treatement he went throught do to you.. Like Hetfield said many times: "They tear you down and build you back up."
He kinda got stronger as the album(Stanger) got closer and closer to finish, but to me, he was never really the same after.
And thats a good thing for him, i guess.
This band has been through so much and the fact they’re actually still making music together shows they really do care for each other and their music
They sound like a therapy session with a family.
At that point they were a band for 20 years so they were a family basically.
And they were in therapy, that other guy in the table besides them and Bob is Dr. Phil, the therapist who helped them in that period
um...thats what it was
A perfect example of artists placing too much importance on their own existence
Kirk : I wonder if Dave will still Take my Place
Watching this scene again many years after first seeing the doc, my main takeaway was that while Lars and James both had very defensible positions, no one in the room (including James and Lars themselves) seemed to have the skills to help them communicate their points of view in a way that could have led to some sort of compromise or better mutual understanding. Rock is trying, but it's pretty clear he doesn't know how to communicate something as simple as "If 4 hours isn't enough, can we come to an agreement that James would still be comfortable with and would get everyone closer to happy" or "Lars, what I'm hearing from James is that he's very vulnerable - he wants to do the band but needs to feel like you care about his wellbeing" etc etc
And Phil Towle - jeez.
I have goals for all of you."
Yeah, I bet you fucking do.
I believe at some point Towle even wanted to try his hand at writing lyrics, most likely to get a cut of the royalties. The band said no.
@@Nobiemon Thank goodness. Could you imagine him of all people writing lyrics for a band, especially a band like Metallica? Jeez
The temper tantrum Towle threw when they told him he was no longer needed told me all I needed to know about the guy. He gets paid a lot of money to sit around and spout off bullshit and when Metallica was done paying him to sit around to spout off bullshit, he threw a hissy fit.
Cut to... Spit Out the Bone, haha... how far they've gone since then.
Kirk is like a kid watching his parents argue over whos taking him to school
Nice symbolism at the end where lars is walking around the ping pong table....its almost as if the message is "you should have stuck to tennis, look at you now"
It's a Danish Superstition that walking around a table tennis table relieves stress, dumbass!!!!
@@MrParkerman6 get the fuck outta here you don't know shit kid
