What is ovarian cyst and what is ovarian cystectomy?
Ovarian cyst is common among young women in reproductive years. It can can be physiological and pathological. Most of ovarian cyst are benign but there are ovarian cyst that can be a borderline tumour and cancerous.
Ovarian cyst can contain clear fluid or blood or chocolate materials. It can also get infected and the fluid can turn into pus. There is something called chocolate cyst which is scientifically called endometrioma. It is usually recurrent and associated with infertility and pelvic adhesions.
When is ovarian cyst need a surgery?
Not all ovarian cyst need surgery. Most of the cases require surveillance. However in the circumstance like the following, ovarian cyst requires surgery to prevent further complication
1. The size of the cyst more than 5cm
2. The cyst has septa and the wall has some projection from within
3. When its complicated by pain, infection, bleeding, sudden increased in size
4. When we are not sure of the nature of the cyst
What can happen to the cyst if not operated?
1. It can get twisted causing acute abdomen
2. Perforated or burst in the abdomen
3. Haemorrhagic
4. Change into cancer
What is the option available to operate ovarian cyst?
Ovarian cyst which is not cancerous can be removed by conventional method i.e laparotomy (open abdomen) or through a minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) or key holes surgery which is a close method.
Laproscopic surgery is far more advantageous and beneficial for women becuse it is minimally invasive, very small scar almost invisible, less painful, less usage of pain killers, faster recovery, faster return to work. As compared to open surgery, it is beneficial especially as it associated with less adhesion and fertility of the patient is much protected due to minimal handling of the reproductive organs
