- Drill chucks are critical to the operation of the tool and ours is bent all out of whack so we're going to replace it! However, in order to do that we'll have to get the old chuck off of the tool and that ends up being a bit of a difficult operation. Lets see what we can do! The drill is a Dewalt DCD771 20v Max cordless model, and the new chuck is a Dewalt DW5353.
Date of filming: April 16th, 2019 (Initial Removal Attempt)
May 30th/31st, 2019 (Second Removal Attempt)

I was a Millwright for 11 years, and earned the Moniker of Shooz. Short for shoemaker. Because I was the go to for Crap jobs.. So!!! I bestow the Nick Name upon you Sir. Well Done.. Cheers Dog....
Holy crap! I had the exact same thing happen to me. "Easy replacement, just hit it with a hammer"....NO. Could NOT get the chuck off. Ordered a new drill and then ran across this video. Snapped right off after about 12 hours in the freezer. THANK YOU! Saved me $120
It didn’t take long for this to become my favorite channel on TH-cam!
Then you may enjoy channels like
"ScannerDanner" w/Paul Danner!
"Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics" Ivan is really well educated, and trying to make a go of Mobil Auto Tech.
"New Level Auto"! Keith, from NYC, is a Mobil Auto Tech. He is friends with almost all of the auto tech guys on TH-cam. Is good friends with Ivan, and Eric O.
"SOUTH MAIN AUTO"! Eric O is one of the best channels on the tube currently. While he don't have as many subs as ETCG, and Kilmer, he has an up and coming audience(over 300k I think) and is a VERY CAPABLE TECH, even though he has no formal schooling. Just learn as you go, kind of!
"DIAGNOSEDAN"! He is Dutch. Just starting out as a TH-cam star. Is as smart as anions ive seen, and is also a little bit of a entertainer!
There are many more. Briansmobil1, Fordtechmakuloco. SuperMario diagnostics, and so many more, that really do have a very good tech perspective, but really don't excel on the entertainment part of the show!
Scannerdanner is the teacher. Eric O and DIAGNOSEDAN, are the showmen, and Keith @NLA, is the master knowledge base, that several of the guys look up too!! GIVE EM ALL A SHOT!! Not just you, but anyone that reads this.
This is the only thing that worked for me!! I never would have thought about this. I put the drill in the freezer for 24 hrs and then had to smack the wrench with a hammer three times and it came off! thank you very much.
Dewalt is the best brand out there as you can tell from watching a video
Now that is what I call a true to life drill chuck removal video!!!- I hate videos that show potentially nightmarish jobs as simple and trouble free. Most videos show the removal of a drill chuck that is completely functional at the get go- thanks for this one- Now that I know things like this happen to other people I don't feel so bad :)
that was painful to watch. i give you props for sticking with it. i would have set it on fire
James Hall that’s how my drills always die, they light on fire, I lost 2 makitas that way, the first one trying to mix a 5 gallon bucket of drywall mud and the second drilling into concrete to put studs in for hurricane panels
Wanting a keyed chuck on my Dewalt 996 or whatever drill brought me here, thank you for the awesome video that shows what happens to real people doing real things with real tools.
Maaan this is more like a commercial than tutorial
Dewalt should give you free supply from now on, amazing!!
The people at Dewalt probably had a huge party after watching this
Yep
This ABSOLUTELY works. Thank you. I have a Dewalt right angle drill that the chuck got ruined (Note that the right-angle dewalt does not have a bolt inside the chuck).
I hit it for 10 minutes with a hammer on a hex key and the chuck would turn but not break loose. I put it in the freezer for 90 minutes, put the hex key in the chuck, two whacks later it came loose. Brilliant
Fuzzy deserves more subs the content he puts out in unlike any other car TH-camr.
One of the best You Tube videos I have ever seen! Very Funny
I do not know if that trick with a freezer helped but I did it, Thumb up to you man!
For a moment I thought I was watching an ave vidjay-o
Very nice as always
Keep your stick in the ice
DeWalt and Bostitch drills are amazing. My kid left my Bostitch in a wheelbarrow, and it rained so the drill was completely submerged in water. I took it all apart and scraped a little corrosion off and got a new battery because the old one was toast and I got my drill back.
It's amazing what a good temperature differential will do. I froze the axle bushings and ball joints for my TJ before pressing them in and it easily removed half of the work. Kind of made me want to buy an industrial sized freezer to park entire cars in...
nothing like dropping a bearing on frozen shaft, just to come in an hour to a bassicly one solid part :D
Oh. my. freakin. god. Thank you. This actually worked. I could not get the chuck of my DCD795 to come loose (after also having problems with removing the setscrew on which I sheared two T20 bits off but WD40 did the trick then).
I put the drill into the freezer for a day and after that I chucked in a (warm) allen wrench and after whacking the allen wrench 10 times or so (holding the drill in my hand) it finally came loose.
I came across this because I want to change my chuck. To quote Top Gun ‘We’re showing this as an example of what NOT to do!’
After seeing this I bought a DeWalt 998 drill thank you dude.
Probably a bit late to the comments but I have just had to do the chuck on my dewalt drill. After you take the t20 restraining screw out, my chuck had a t45 hole inside the chuck to release it from the spindle. Made it a lot easier
This is totally how it goes for me, not as it should! So then I give up on salvaging w/e and decided to just beat-on it, set it on fire and then cut it up until I win!
ugh Jinx myself and now I got a mess to fix for the vlog I'm working on.
This was as humorous as it was informative. I'm trying to change the keyless chuck on an 18V 1/2" heavy duty cordless drill that has seen some heavy duty use so I'm expecting that the chuck will require a heavy duty removal process. It's the one with the metal gearbox & selectable torque value for use on screws & bolts. Thanks for the video.
😂😂 the sarcasm is so great keep it up and never stop
Thanks for the all the information in your video. I had almost given up hope of getting the locking screw out. Broke a couple of star bits but to no avail.
But I used your idea of the impact drill and sure enough it worked.
Many many thanks.
Thanks for the video. What a joke, you guys probably want to crush the drill after a while. But you stayed steady at it and got it! That’s awesome. I have a similar issue. The jaws stink, that’s an understatement. I’ll try to work on mine in the near future.
I watched a 1/2 dozen clips how easy it is to remove a dewalt chuck yet my experience was like yours. I was trying to remove a perfectly good chuck from a DW770. I now have zero usable parts left. The little gears cogs will make nice collectables for me to throw away some years from now.
Wow, you weren't kidding the hard way! I'm surprised that you couldn't get the big heavy hammer smack against a big allen wrench in the chuck method to work. I have done this to a few of my DeWalt 20V drills that come with some lower end/worn out keyless chucks, usually takes a few good swings but they will pop loose. Keyed chucks are good for a big hd corded drill, but too much of a hassle for a cordless, I went with a heavy duty keyless chuck that the DeWalt DCD996 hammer drill uses.
And this is why i'm subscribed to this channel. Sometimes, projects and repairs don't go as planned, and you are not afraid to show this on your channel.
I bet the broom stick wouldn’t break on you like that.
Laying in rest, waiting for its next assignment. In Broomstick we trust.
Ryan Rink In Broomstick we trust
Legend has it that every full moon, a strange broomstick can be seen floating around FDP's driveway.
Must say I'm really starting to like the series
Sit with the same problem..
Threw it in the freezer (twice now)..yet to no avai.
Next move… start cutting the chuck down in the hope to yield the same result as per the end the video.. 🤞🏼
never thought i would be up at 2 am watching you beat the fuck out of a drill with a sledgehammer
“Aaaannnddd everything in the drill broke” I laughed to much at that
Well you make one hell of a DeWalt commercial, I must say.
Nice to see real world , instead of all the other videos where the chuck just falls of from farting on it , its never as easy as all the other videos make it out to be , we see lots of drills where the chuck just won't let go and come off.
Not what I wanted to see after already trying to remove mine with no luck... But thanks none the less. Good vid.
I'm having to do the same exact process with a rigid drill. Glad it's not just me
We used the allen key method but then added a lot of leverage with an old crutch. It came off super easy.
I love the narrative commentary
I have a brand new drill I want to upgrade the chuck on. The stock Röhm chuck is good but full metal chucks dont click around as much. I have tried a lot and am surprised the chuck is still straight but throwing it in the freezer is genius. I was gonna try heating the chuck but that could easily go wrong and damage the drill.
I have an Big AEG cordless drill and the chuck has seized, so no way can I get the centre bolt out. After watching your video, I am now ready to cut the chuck in half so I can get the centre bolt out. Before I do that I will find out if it has a clockwise or anti-clockwise thread. Thanks. I am glad you mentioned it.
Bring it to a service center and they will probably remove the chuck for free. That's what I did. Putting the chuck in the vise is the wrong way to do it. Put the socket in the chuck, tighten it and use the biggest breaker bar you got with both hands. Put the body in the vise with wood to protect it. The square drive part goes in the middle of the breaker bar, and a strong quick snap does it.
Fair point about service centers, if you have something like that nearby it would certainly be worth a try! At the beginning of the video I explained that I tried to loosen it the way you explained, but no luck. It may have worked to freeze it and then use that method, though.
That's the way a did it, works perfectly
It was good to see your perseverance and your honest recounting of the Odyssey of how you achieved your goal
Why not use an angle grinder in the first place? Occhams razor taken to its limits
3:20 3:21 3:22
That was pretty funny, but hey it worked!
Breaking out the big ass steel cutter crikey bit extreme but does the job 👍
I could get that very difficult chuck screw out so had to drill it. Am currently trying to undo the chuck (a/c) with allen key in the chuck to snap the remainder of the chuck screw. Not fun at all.
Not likely that any of this is going to help out with this issue, but here goes!!
It's the sudden violent impact, that get the chuck loose. It's difficult to do, sometimes, but usually works!! I have never broke one loose from just that hard twisting. Freezing likely helped a bit, and some penetrant would likely help. Acetone and trans fluid makes a great homemade solution.
You need to put a 90 degree tool in the chuck, and hit it with a hammer. You need a longer lever. And a larger hammer! Think "TORQUE WRENCH"! Think "CHEATER BAR"! But, you need it solid, and be able to hit it hard, and not let the drill give way, like when it's held in a hand!
A piece of bent re-bar might work. Just put a bend right close to e end, and chuck that up!! If it will tighten up, and you don't plan to reuse it, tighten even more with s pipe wrench! The tool don't need to bend away, so a bigger piece of re-bar, or a shorter length! A 3/8 in, 4inch long extension, with the square drive end tightened up. Then put a breaker bar in to add torque.
Don't push on it, strike it. It's like the multiple blows of an impact driver, the hard hits, over several times, over a short period, that usually does it. A 3/8 Allen wrench and a 12 framing hammer, may not have the gumption to do it. Not MANLY ENOUGH!!
Have someone hold the drill with two hands, tightly and solidly. Then hold the tension on the tool with one hand, and strike repeatedly with a good solid mass of MANMETAL!! A 3lb hand sledge, OR BIGGER should work! The strike will put a tremendous shock load on it for a millisecond, and not tend to load up and bind like a constant pull will!
I hope this info helps someone else get their chuck off, without too much trouble! I needed this info for the first drill I destroyed, removing the chuck, I finally got the chuck off, but there was nothing left of the drill. Luckily, I wanted the chuck for another drill, and wasn't worried about the first drills TOTAL DESTRUCTION!! The drill that I wanted to put the chuck on, was an older one direction, no impact, one speed, hand me down, twist drill from another era! I was already done with the stupidity, since I destroyed a smaller, lighter, reversible, variable speed, nicer drill, but was a battery drill and the batteries were dead, and cost more than I wanted to spend, and the old key style chuck on the old electric drill had no key, and was going to be a chore to do what I was needed it for. I fought the old chuck for a few minutes, and just suddenly thought to get a longer helped tool! And old, unused screwdriver, was the answer!! It fit the old chuck, was stiff enough, and was fairly easy to get bent to a 90degree bend! My neighbor saw me struggling, and lent a hand, and a BIGGER HAMMER!! The first attempt was fruitless. He wasn't hold it still enough, and I was afraid of hitting him with an errant blow, and a flying hammer from my tired hands and arms!! He said to go for it, and he proper it on his knees, held it tight for just a slight moment, and I swung it like i meant to hit it!! Popped it loose without any problems!! It hurt his knees a little, but nothing else!! No other issues after that!! Oh, the little screw inside, to hold it on, is really REVERSE THREAD! The destroyed drill suffered that lose first! The old drill, it wasn't as tight, and as I screwed it the wrong way, it tightened up. And when I went to turn it back, to help prevent tearing up the threads, it loosened!! IM AGINE MY SURPRISE!! A screw from England!! The threads were on the wrong side, just like their cars!! Lol
Lots of good tips! I did try with an 18" breaker bar attached to a hex socket and a 4lb hammer, but didn't have any luck. Maybe having another person hold it would have helped but I think the chuck was starting to fail because it would loosen up after a single big hit no matter how hard I tightened it down with channel locks.
That was more towards any future replacements, by anyone that needed some tips!! Yours was likely a odd duck in the mix! There's always one (or 30)! It was certainly on tighter than the average chucks, ttho. I've seen some pretty snug ones, I've also seen some that fell off before I could get anywhere close to them!! Lol
Best of luck!
This is why we can't have nice things.
Kidding aside that says something about the build of that drill that after all that felony grade abuse it kept on keepin on.
I bought a brand new Dewalt 20v max heavy duty drill, used it for the first time with my brand new Eskimo auger and during the 2nd hole I drilled, the chuck completely fell off along with my ice fishing auger into the bottom of the lake.
Love the videos
Way to go bro. I have the DCD777 which does not have a Torx or Phillips head chuck screw. It's well, a smooth dimple. I have no idea how to get that one out, but I would appreciate it if you could point me in the direction where you bought your keyed chuck. I too do not like the keyless chuck idea for reasons we've seen here, (it's an expendable part). I'd like to get that keyed chuck. Oh, did it come with a key as well? Best to you.
I really think I am the worlds biggest idiot ,or , they grossly exaggerate how easily they replace chucks on drills. I will be 64 this summer , God Willing ,and I ve never successfully replaced a drill chuck ! I ve tried everything under the sun but always failed . I did get one apart but drill was worthless when I was done . What frustrates me is I ve rebuilt motors, and fabricated heavy industrial equipment most of my life . I ve come to the conclusion that I ve always found brand new unused Jacobs Chucks at yard and garage sales .No one could ever get the old chuck off so they tossed the drill and the new chuck sat in dads workshop until he passed and kids sell it at garage sale . Lol ! I just tried to remove Jacobs keyless chuck ,all metal from a DeWalt DwD112 corded 3\8 reversible drill . All the videos show a set screw inside the shaft ,left hand thread . This has no screw, it takes a big Allen wrench that goes inside the shaft ? It appears to be the end of the output that wrench is going in . Either its a big Allen head screw left hand thread or the chuck just threads off the shaft . I beat the hell out of things ,heated and shot blaster on it , nothing ! I have drill chuck immersed in oil standing overnight , will fight again tomorrow ! Anyone else have a chuck like thus ?
REALLY helpful and clear, thank you. If I was in US then I'd buy the replacement chuck from you :-)
Considering the cost of these things are pretty low now, it is my opinion.....and most will say I'm wrong......that replacement would have been the more effective route. And you get a warranty with it.
You must be new here.
Dewalt ain't cheap, and once you commit to a battery manufacturer, you're pretty much married to them for life. I don't blame him for trying to fix that one.
Plus it gives us content.
Every other tutorial for this on the internet uses an older model Drill, FYI, so thank you so much for doing this, as I think something about the new design makes it harder to use the hammer+alan key approach (But I am now terrified to complete this process on my own drill (I will use the freezer first) I thought the 'everything is broken' comment was factual at first and was... heartbroken)
EDIT: Nvm my channelocks did the trick
I've got a ~40 year-old Ryobi drill which has also seen better days. It was going pretty well until I used it as a die grinder against some mag wheels, it's never sounded the same since. It definitely needs new motor brushes and I'd like to put new bearings in it like you did with your angle grinder. Makes you really see the value of these brand name tools, the typical $9 Harbour Freight tool would have died a million deaths handling the same abuse.
I have a 20 year old Ryobi 18V drill that has smelled like burning armature every time I use it for at least the past 10 years. It doesn't stop working, so I don't worry about it. For what I paid, I'm very pleased with me Ryobi stuff.
Ryobi tools are great but my God the batteries suck
When you get to the last bit, try sanding a flat on opposite sides with a rough sanding pad, stick it in a vice and hopefully reverse it off. The heat from the sanding helps to free it and the flats stop it spinning in the vice.
When you got the thing out of freezer and started hitting it I thought the plastic will shatter lmao
GFRP For The Win!
You mention it was just spinning your suppose to put it in lowest gear for removal. You could also crank your air compressor up to 225 psi and a decent impact will remove anything 😁
I have the exact same model
The chuck will not come out
Tried the ale wrench Nothing
A pipe wrench. Nothing
I am going to try the freezer method
(update) I tried the freeze method, the chuck would still not move had to use the grinder.
Because they use locktight or something similar when they fit the chuck. Had this problem. Just grinded the old chuck to nothing.
meanwhile my Dewalt drill has a chuck that wont stay on...
Try Loctite.
That’s cannibalism Dewalt eats smaller Dewalt.
Ouch! I am shocked that the drill still works! I love dewalt.
Wish I would of know that trick. My
Dad had. Milwaukee drill that he had for like 20 years and my brother got a drill bit stick in the head of the bolt inside of the Chuck. I tried getting it off with all of the cutting methods but we finally gave up and had to throw it away.
I have a nice old Swiss watch my grandpa left me that I wonder if you'd have a look at for me.
Love the commentary!
Is there a link to that new chuck? Also mine is stuck all the way open and will not close up. Therefor ii cannot tighten any hex wrench in the chuck to loosen it! Ever seen this one before? Any tips would be appreciated!
This is a rare bit of patience, everyone else woulda just thrown that sucker away and bought a new one.
ive tried this.. about 50-50 success.. the drill makers have some compound i think they apply to the threads during asemembly
LMFAO absolutely love your dry sense of humor it's just like mine
Dewalt engineer: Only thing that happen to our drill now is that the chuck gets loose.
Dewalt worker: "Tighting to 500 ft/lb intesifies"
OMGLOL I hope you win a decent lottery ticket.
nice vid
At least the torx screw came loose! I've broken 3 bits and nothing.. Probably just take the thing outside and shoot it with my 45
Damn that drills tough
Fluffy dice
Dam, that was some torture test.
Someone needs to get a "work smarter not harder" poster and like staple it to his forehead lol jokes aside love your content
that was hard to watch...
in a later episode, "I don't know why it broke, I was just drilling a hole..."
I would have just taken the drill apart - and given up when that didn't work😂
Hello, #DeWalt? This channel has clearly proven that your tools can survive most uses(advised & otherwise), so how about you sponsor a video & supply maybe a couple of new drills? Thanks!
How do I remove inside star screw?? It flat due to hammer drilling. 😢
Hello any idea why my chuck knob became stiff when i try to tighten it?
How's the Pontiac going?
DeWalt? Are you watching? Great vid!
@ 1:18 I think I found out how baby drills are made
have you ever thought of making merchandise, specifically fuzzy dice?
This video made my day Lol
but if you repair tools for a living how much can you charge for the time spent on this one low cost tool ?. Great vid tho.
At about minute 3, I would have been shopping on Amazon. ;-)
Quedo bien bellaco
Certainly seems "built tough"! (Project Blinky Ep 25 out now by the way.)
Did it not occur to you to just take the thing apart and remove the chuck after taking apart the gear shaft? It would have saved you a lot more time and saved your drill from the wear and cosmetic damage.
Have a 771 drill/driver. Got the bolt out, struggling with loosening the chuck. My drill and this one in the video have a gear box that will pop when pressure is applied and you can't apply any more torque than when the gear box spins. Saw a video where a guy took his case off and separated the chuck and stem from the motor. Placed the stem in a bench vise and powered the chuck off with pipe wrench. Think these drill drivers have a gear box for the torque adjustment and are a different beast?
The housing is fiberglass reinforced. This is why is so stur
5 years i NOTHING, try having one for 15 to 20 years
...and that is when I realized it was threaded the other way.
You've got to strike when the irons cold.
Poor drill, are a you fixer or a destroyer?
