Tommy! I am 75 years old and have probably been using drills longer than you've been alive; however, you taught me something today! The proper way to secure a drill in the new drill motors was probably in the owners manual - but. I'm so smart, I didn't read it! I had no idea that actuallt torqueing it in was better than the "quick grab and trigger" method. Much obliged, young fellow. Excellent presentation. 🤠

I really appreciate properly used words and phrases. I can't help it. I was just born that way. For example, it hurts my soul when people say "I could care less" instead of "I couldn't care less". So, I smiled and nodded in agreement during the segment on pre-drilling :)

I agree, I've been like that and then joined Toastmasters and was pleased to find others like that. It helped in CA to have others call out improper, cliche or jargon words as poor English. It's amazing out words become bastardized and repeated, incorrectly. My peeve is turning nouns into verbs: undergrounding, do you math? We were dialoging...

Its wrong though. Pre-drilling is very much used in a large number of applications, for example we always pre-drill a smaller hole before using a large diameter drillbit in metals, or else the large drillbit will wobble so much that the hole get the wrong diameter and often the drillbit will break from sideways forces.

DeWalt's decision to put torque, drill and hammer all on a single collar is the reason I buy Makita. I regularly go from drilling to screwdriving. I do not want to be twisting that collar between every operation. Makita's approach of a torque collar and a separate drill/drive/hammer lever is a far superior solution.

I started out with an entry level 18v drill + driver 2 piece kit, and later on added a brushless 18v hammer drill (same brand, better model). Having 3 items means less changing of bits when doing drilling, countersinking, and driving. Really saves time and faffing about. And if you stay in one ecosystem, the batteries are interchangeable too.

For many years I drilled holes into concrete using a regular drill. Never needed a lot of holes in concrete, but always didn't look forward to that task. Excellent video, very informative. I've noticed on the tables listing drill size for a pilot hole for a given screw size, the pilot holes are larger than the screw shank, but, if I use a drill to match the screw shank, it provides a much tighter fit in wood, and often results in a damaged screw in metal.

Another tip to prevent the tip (pun intended) of the bit from moving around is to start in reverse, creating a small bowl, then move forward.
As for clearing out holes, it's important to keep the drill turning forward (it will not clear waste when in reverse).
The tape trick on the bit is also useful anytime you need a specific depth.
One question: is the combination drill (with hammer) any good? One big reason to use a hammer drill is in house foundation concrete, so if the small hammer drill does not do it, it's not very useful. I'm wondering if I should get a drill driver drill and a combination drill, or a dill driver with a true hammer drill (I'm looking to upgrade/streamline batteries). I also like having two drivers: a drilling one, a countersink one, and the impact driver to screw.

I watched your video start to finish because of the challenge that you presented. I have been using tools since before this century began. I did not learn anything. I must say that I use the trigger to tighten my bits. But, I always finish tightening them by hand, In that, I cetainly agree with you. Had I seen this in the 20th century, I would have learned what I know now. I would respectfully ask that you edit the challenge out of this. This is a great video for someone just getting into tools. I learned about finishing holes from the other side after I messed up a door using a jig.

One "trick" I've discovered recently is when tightening the chuck is to do it as you normally would, but then you need to twist the chuck backwards gently and it'll click to lock your chuck. All these years I've been just wrenching it as hard as I could without locking it! Doesn't seem to be a very well know thing........

What setting and what gear did you use when drilling the hole in the concrete? And then when driving the screw into the concrete?

I started to drill a pilot hole in my house cement foundation using a
regular drill and a masonry drill bit. However, I now find that I'm not
making much progress after 20 minutes. If I decide to use a hammer drill
to complete the pilot hole, will I need to change to a hammer drill
    bit? Thanks.

Pre-drilling means to drill a hole before you put the screw. You dont always do that, often you just screw it in and let it make its own hole. Drilling is when you need a hole for other things than a screw. Pre-drilling is a useful word, if i were to instruct someone i just say "remember pre-drilling here" instead of "remember to drill holes first before you put screws here". Its called pre-drilling because it is followed by screwing, a very useful word that simplifies our language. In mechanical production we use pre-drilling too, and a lot, thats were the word came from, we always drill a smaller hole before using a large diameter drillbit, or else the large drillbit will wobble so much that the hole get the wrong diameter and often the drillbit will break from sideways forces. Pre-drilling is also used when working on the inner dia in a lathe. Youre just clueless and got no real life experience, its as simple as that.

When you were using the hammer drill on the concrete, were you using it in "hammer" mode when you drilled the hole, or only when you went to drive the concrete anchor?

This was/is really great video, just my point of view I only buy expensive hole saws as the cheap ones don’t work as well through all my cheap stuff out. The auger bit I use all the time ½ and ¾ for electrical drilling through 2x4 walls and floor joists to run wires, yes it pulls right through only way to go for this job. The counter sink bit comes in Allen key or set screw the set screw is junk just buy ones with Allen keys. I have a bulky 90-degree attachment for drilling holes the one you are showing looks amazing for drilling and screwing, I am going to get one of those. I needed that yesterday as the bulky one cost me as I have to make a bigger hole in drywall, installing backing for plumbing. Thank you

Great video with plenty of tips I learned, even as an experienced DIYer! Thx!!
Question: what did I do wrong here: I torqued my wrist yesterday using my drill and a 2.5" hole-saw for a cut-through the exterior wall (high, near ceiling, all wood, but old, dense wood). I tried the highest setting on the torque adjustment but it just didn't do anything. Went back to the drill setting and while it worked its way through much of the material, one slight off-center, moment it caught and the drill went swinging. It also tool many minutes of drilling, pausing, resuming, etc. Would a hammer drill have been a better choice? I have a newer Milwaukee M18

    • @OutoftheWoodwork
      @OutoftheWoodwork  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks! Hole saws are notorious for that. You have to really have a firm grip so it won't swing out on you. Drilling a hole into an exterior wall like that is just going to take time. You definitely need to be on the drill setting on not any of the torque settings...those engage the clutch at certain torques. I wouldn't use a hammer drill for that.
