Folks keep yammering on about this not being anything anyone asked for... which is objectively false. It's clearly the replacement and update of the M5 which has a very loyal following and still lives on many pro player boards. It runs on a standard 9V power supply, and takes up a regular pedal space on a board. It's a swiss army knife for people who have zero interest or use in the Stomp or full Helix. The argument that it's not a good value, because "it's only one effect" is also nonsense, when people fall all over themselves throwing money at less capable Eventide and UA one trick pony pedals. If it's not for you, that's cool. They're still going to sell like hotcakes.
Why are people acting like people don't buy 200+ dollar one-off effects all the freaking time? Like... Chase Bliss just dropped a $399 Boost/EQ. Seriously. This thing is like 250 pedals in one. It's good.
I already have all the pedals that make up the core of my tone. I’ve been looking into some pretty expensive pedals for some one-off effects that I don’t use as often. This fits the bill really well. This pedal is 100% for me and I will be buying one. Edit: ended up buying one “used” for 250 (used is in quotes here because when it arrived it was clear that it was absolutely brand new) and I couldn’t be happier. It was absolutely the right decision.
Agreed. Even a POG pico is $240. If I opt for a fancy harmony effect like the Hedra, that's $300. So, the HX One (perhaps used, or with a discount code), is worth it for the harmony/octave effects alone. Combine that with a looper and tuner...I think it's worth it. I use a UA Ruby for amp sim, so I don't need it to be my amp anyway.
Have you looked into the Zoom Multi Stomp or the M5? Both are half the price of this new pedal. The multi stomp has many effects Line6 doesn’t have (especially if you download the effects manager software that someone made online. It lets you load in effects from other zoom products). And it can do amp modeling and up to 6 effects at once. Or the Line6 M5, which is really what this thing is designed to replace. The M5 has all of the legacy effects, which make up about half of what is in this new pedal. As an owner of the Hx stomp, I can say I actually do use the legacy effects often because some of them are better or just as good as the new versions of those effects. The new “dynamic” series of reverbs are better and I do like the Transistor Tape Delay. But otherwise, I’m usually using those legacy effects. They completely hold up - even the overdrives.
I’ve been considering a Digitech Drop but the prices are pretty crazy. For only slightly more I could this which could be repurposed to many other things. And I want it to be a standalone device so repitching my guitar is totally independent of my patches. Idk how anyone sees this as an odd release. Like yeah I wish it was a bit cheaper for a single effect but…since when is anything cheap anymore
I can understand the limitations for guitarists, but as a bassist this is a dream pedal! For the most part we are only using one effect at a time. Now I do have a 16 pedal mostly analog board I’ll never give up. But what I’ll do with this is run it in a separate Boss LS-2 loop where I can blend it with all my other effects in my other loop! When I’m space limited or can’t bring my big board this is a great and easy backup. Also for my home studio recording it’s simple! $300? C’mon folks what’s not for a bass player to love?
It's straightforward: for sessions, recording at home, function bands etc. It makes total sense when you just need to create one sound only for one song. I'll keep stuff like drives, chorus and delay on the board and use this for the esoteric stuff.
Yep, you nailed it! I used to have a spot on my pedalboard that would have a different pedal on it every time I changed bands or filled in for someone etc. I would just put one of these on my board now, no special power requirement, true of buffer bypass and a looper for practicing.
Exactly. I just bought one this week for that very reason. Fits one slot that used to be a chorus but now I can also have phaser, flanger, harmonic trem, univibe etc. without swapping out.
I don’t get it: it’s a single high fidelity stereo unit with many possible effects for $250 right now. If you compare this with the myriad pedals from UA or Strymon it does way more for less money and sounds just as good.
Poly Pitch was my first thought as well, however the fact that it can do poly pitch at all with however much DSP this thing has proves they could easily do two fx combos. And in my opinion they could easily do this without comprising the vision of simplicity. Just do combo fx blocks that preset a reverb and a delay, like a UA Del Verb. Or a compressor/boost drive combo. It doesn’t have to be menu divey in order to offer far more bang for buck.
Thanks so much for an honest, unbiased opinion. I watched this clip with a great interest as I was considering purchasing a HX ONE. I already own the, generally well liked, M5 from Line6, hence this question: are the effects incorporated in HX ONE clearly better sounding (I use chiefly modulation and delay FX)? If you know the M5, that is.
"But it only does 1 effect at a time" so do the Boss multieffects, the original Line 6 (ie DL4, M5), Strymons etc. Would be cooler if the HX could do 2 at once, but plenty of others don't either. Those pedals never get that criticism, people love them. It's so dumb to only criticize the HX One for it when it does a LOT more than its competitors.
I'm only 27 but digital modeling and IRs have yet to win me over. The HX one is for people like me and all the simple humans like me who don't want to think about patches and presets if we don't have to. The flux capabilities amd user default presets are more than I would have ever thought to ask from an effect pedal. Let alone a 250+ effects pedal.
This is exactly what it is. I think comparing it to a modeler is missing the point. This is a shot fired at the H9. It's going to be a great flex pedal for a basic board.
@@timelmore2 Given that the M5 and the H9 hit the market at around the same time, the idea that the HX One is somehow a "shot fired" at the H9 seems...off.
As a traditional pedalboard user, I have never been interested in an hx product until this one. It's just an update m5. Why is everyone overthinking this thing?
Almost every Helix user would have bought one of these, just for the heck of it had the pricing been better, it's the pricing that I find wrong about this product, too close to a HX Stomp, I would rather buy a second HX Stomp than one of these. Anyone else out there share my view?
Henry Ford famously said that if he'd asked people what they wanted they'd have replied "faster horses". Line6 is a world class company, and they know what they're doing. Their product people will have done their research and validated the market for this latest gizmo. It will most probably sell a ton of units whether anyone was asking for it or not. I'm not in the target market, but I'm almost certain I'll pick one up from the used market when 2nd hand prices get down around the $200 mark just to try out. These things are toys for 99% of consumers after all.
I think once these have been around a while and they start selling on Reverb used closer to $200, I'll probably get one. I like the fact that it runs off 9v.
@@GreatPlanet-c7o I think the plan is for it to be $300, but for those of us who already have Helix products, it may be a bit of a hard sell. However, on my *other* pedalboard, this might find a place eventually. I used to have a Digitech iStomp back in the day which was way before its time and it was a failure for the company. It was a pedal that you could install any one of a dozen or so effects; super flexible for its time. The M5 and the HX One feel similar to me. Again, I'll probably wind up with one once the price is right.
@TheDilligan How does this differ from the M5? Does it just have more tones/options, and/or improved tone quality? They’re both Line6 single-effect-at-a-time pedals, so…..?
@@pwlebrun4573 So Line6 used to have the "4 series" of effects pedals. The most famous one of course is the DL4. They then had the M-Series of multi-effects units, which would combine all of the 4-series effects together. The M13 can do 4 of these effects at once, the M9 can do three, the M5 can do one effect at a time. Now Line6 has progressed past the M-series and does the HX series. The effects models from the M-series are included in all of the HX units under the category of "legacy". None of those old effects are bad, but they are from a previous generation of effects modeling. The HX pedals have way more effects. Some of them are modern redo's of those legacy effects and others are totally new. The HX EFfects and HX one are the closest thing to the M series, while The HX stomp and Helix also include Amp modeling more complex signal routing. Also, Unlike the M series, the HX series receives updates. Line6 releases updates couple times a year, adding new effects and new amps. So the HX one has all of the HX effects, but none of the amps. This includes all of the legacy effects as well that come in the M5. Additionally I think there are upgrades to the hardware, A/D conversion, and higher internal sample rates. None of this makes the M5 bad. But the HX one would indeed have every effect the M5 has, sound a little better on those effects, has about 140 additional effects and will probably be included in future updates.
I have never in my life seen a product garner such hatred as the HX one. Who cares if it is meant for you, because there are a lot of people who will enjoy this product. Everyone seems to be angry that it is not a mini version of the Stomp. I don't recall a lot of negativity surrounding the H9 when it came out, or the big sky, both of which are very expensive single effect pedals. Why does Line 6 have to fulfill your personal wish list every time it releases a product?
Personally, I feel like I'm almost always going to want more than one effect at a time - Delay and Reverb for example - so HX one for me is a bit too limited?
thank you very much for your kind and valuable respone, better to consider using Tonex with HX Stomp with external footswitch to expand the options then
".....grumpy, microcosmic, short-sighted corners of the internet" ??? Translation: If you don't see the value of this product, it's because there is something wrong with you. Interesting way to characterize your customers.
My first thought was that this is an add-on for current modeler users. I never look at the DSP-devouring pitch effects because of the compromises I’d have to make in my Helix. I play in church, where key changes for the same songs are the norm. I’d consider one of these before I would a Digitech drop pedal. To me, this means Helix 2 is not coming anytime soon.
This is targeted to h9 users and the like and bring them closer to the helix ecosystem.. which is likely to drop its new version soon, or another great update. The h9, let's face it, while still and awesome unit Eventide essentially abandoned those users with the release of the h90. This unit, like the H9, is best used with a midi capable looper/switch system, where you can change the order in the fx chain (think gigrig and the like).
In a world where the Line 6 DL4 has been in production for over 20 years, categorizing Line 6's "main audience" as consumers of complex digital modelers seems just a little off to me.
Been looking at Multi Mod pedals MD500, Mobius, Terraform etc. This is cheaper than the aforementioned pedals plus it has a tuner, looper etc. For some reason people are having a hard time understanding who this pedals is for….
I don't think I understand why people are not getting this pedal. Sure, if you already own a Helix... this is probably not for you. But if you have an amp and some pedals that are the core of your tone... but you need one specific effect for this one song, and a totally different effect for another song, this is your wild card pedal. It's a pitch shifter one minute, then it's a guitar synth, then it's a megaphone effect. Or maybe it's a different drive pedal for each song?! The possibilities are practically endless!
As an M5 user I perfectly get its purpose but I’m not sure about the price. For extra $70 you can get a TC plethorax3 and use 3 effects simultaneously.
That's true but I think there's a discrepancy on the value. The HX One has has 250 something effects and the Plethora only has like... 20? I don't know the exact number but it's not that many, and as far as I know there aren't any ODs. It just depends on what's more important to you: having more options or being able to stack effects.
It seems like a really good option for someone who needs random effects every once in a while. Why carry around 3-10 pedals of sounds you’ll hardly use
Yet people have no problem spending $750+ for an Eventide H9 and the HX One does more... This is a solid value for the flexibilty and range of sounds it provides.
Very good point. People don't bash the Eventide on that instance, but it's basicaly the exact same concept. The guitar community is very arrogant. Because it's Eventide and regarded as top of the crop (which is a fact), people won't trash the product.. "too expensive for a one at a time effect device" But the fact is the HX One and H9 do exactly the same thing. And the Eventide is 3 times the price ! Even if it's better quality effects, nobody seems to point the fact it's still a VERY expensive "one effect at a time" pedal..
I have Helix Floor, hx stomp, and hx effects already. As I think about it, there are times it would be great to have the HX One to expand what I have, or if just going to a jam and don't want to take a full board. To expand a Hx Stomp, for example, you could use midi to change a snapshot and select a specific effect on the HX one.
This won't happen but yeah that would be cool, but I would like a direct digital interface between the devices to prevent another D/A Conversion block in my chain.
Run the Hx Stomp in the FX loop of the Helix Floor, then run the HX Effects in the FX loop of the HX Stomp. Then just use the HX One as your tuner. DONE
This product made sense to me when I heard it takes regular power supplies. ... Line 6 thinks this is for stomp box guys as a gateway to modeling and multi-effects. Maybe that's true, I don't know. ... I think in the long run This will be for modeling and multi-effects guys who branch out into piecemeal boards as a Swiss army knife when you need something in a pinch that you already know you can get in Helix Land. Like, "oh no I really wanted this fancy reverb for this sound but I don't own that pedal, But I know I can get that sound in the Helix so where's that stupid HX1 thing laying around?"
From a psychology and marketing standpoint, these might sell better if they limited it to only reverbs, with a metallic gray paintjob for example (same price), and then maybe a gold one that's only the drives, green one only delays and so on. Seems counterintuitive, but the way it would be perceived is more like a premium reverb (with trails, midi, many different reverbs, presets), premium modulation etc. And there'd be no complaint about "only 1 effect at a time." I've seen other brands release identical hardware with different paintjobs and software loaded inside. If you wanted to use this sometimes as a drive and sometimes as a delay, most likely you'd then also need some kind of pedal order switcher to put it in the correct spot in the chain. While this can be viewed as a versatile pedal for any one spot in the chain, it's not as likely that a guitarist (without an FX order switcher) will be able to use both the drives and reverbs in any one rig. But if they made them for each effect type, in fun colors pedalboard enthusiasts enjoy, the perception would be different. I see this with BOSS, where people have OD-200, MD-200, IR-200 and DD-200 and Im just like "that's an expensive way to buy a GT-1000CORE". But also I'm old enough to remember Voltron/GoLion, and forming something big out of smaller, colorful pieces has a certain charm to it.
Is the replacement to the M5 but for the Helix Universe. You can use the ins and outs to place it pre or post drive pedals. It’s good for those who want to explore the Helix tones at a lower price point. That being said, 299 is too high, 199-249 would be a better price range.
The problem for me with this device is it's very hard to incorporate in an analog pedalboard. Why ? Because since effect placement in a pedal chain is very important (to me anyway), this pedal can't stay at the same place regarding the effect you use.. Delay, looper, reverb ..must be at the end. Modulation must be after drives and before delay/verb... Drives, comp, boost.. must be in the beginning of the chain. So this HX One just can't integrate as a multipurpose tool on my board. That's too bad by the way, because I was really interested. It's versatile but not adequate for a multi single-effects pedalboard. If you need just one effect at a time, and have a good drive pedal it's fine otherwise For studio use also, very useful. I'm not sure it can replace a very good one purpose dedicated pedal ? A high end delay is pricier than the HX One. So, if you say, well let's use the HX One just for delays, and place it at the end of the chain, or for modulation and put it in the middle.. will it replace a Strymon or analog boutique pedal? Hence you can then have a 127 banks of modulation effects, or delays, depending of what you've decided to use it for?
I love my two drives, my delay, my verb and my tube amp. I have often wished I had a second delay, or a multi mod, or a weird pitch/synth thing or weird fuzz after my drives, but I don't have money or pedal board real estate to fill all those needs. I have also owned a Stomp but sold it because I hated menu diving while at band practice. This product is a match made in heaven for me and will totally buy it.
So, Line 6 releasing the HX One means they are neglecting the multi-effects crowd? Are you kidding? Just look at their other lineup. They are ALL geared toward the multi-effects crowd. They can't introduce a SINGLE product that doesn't comport with that recipe??? I want to be able to play HX effects without having to mess with levels or menus or blocks, and want it to fit onto my pedalboard...all things I don't like about the HX Stomp.
Allow 3 to 5 blocks and include only Reverbs/Delay/Modulation and maybe some pitch effects and call it "HX Loop Effects" at 299$. It will be a nice alternative to something like a "TC Electronics Plethora ". I would buy one for my amp.
Really needs 2 fx at once plus the gate. Would pair well withmy tonex or stomp to add switchable effect to add to the base modlers. Or as a special Fx for an amp that has a built in verb.
I actually preordered one yesterday, even though I currently run the HX Stomp. I am trying to downsize my rig to a smaller setup/pedalboard and will use it as the final slot on the board for everything that does not justify a standalone pedal. I used the M5 before for the stomp, but it is too large and the new Helix stuff sounds better imo. The HX stomp could probably replace my full setup alone, but I really like pedals and never really got comfortable with modelling.
2 switches and only being able to toggle one single effect at a time was a big miss IMO not giving us the option to configure it to toggle 2 separate effects. I love my stomp HX but the form factor of this thing would have been perfect for a cramped board but I REALLY need to be able to toggle 2 different effects. Give me an HX Two. Eric is wrong.
How do you pump out so many vids? You're the guitar-content king! And for what it's worth, I'm not a big modeler guy (I have a strymon iridium, which I do like), but I would have been very interested in this if it could handle more than one effect at a time. For $300, it's too much for a single-effect-at-a-time function when I could spend a small amount more and get something that does this.
Tim Pierce addresses this in his vid. His point was that session guys don't have the time to fiddle around with menu diving. Traditionalists also aren't interested in the menu diving stuff either. Since Line6 discontinued the M series of stomps I think this is to fill that gap.
@@johnnathancordy I haven't used it, but the menu on this is much simpler. Scroll through to the effect and go. The other modellers are far more fiddly with more parameters etc to get things setup. I'd say just watch Tim's video on it. It even shows a bunch of session guys who use the M9 because of the immediacy and simplicity of getting the sounds.
New to line 6, I’m thinking to trade my mobius for one of these, mainly to save space, and watching this video shows so many usable sounds, simple interface, midi compatible, I might even trade one of my other big Strymon delays and have multiple of these rather than the big Strymons. I know I’d lose $ on the trade, and I love the strymons sound, but the space I’d be gaining would be well worth it. Flux and midi is what sold me I think…and stereo. Nice work line 6.
I will definitely buy one if line6 makes it as "advanced" version of zoom ms50g, that is to say, a tiny multi-effect. Instead, line6 has chosedn to make it a smaller version of their own unsuccessfu product M5, so disappointed.
While I appreciate getting your take on the HX One, I'm a little confused by what you're saying here. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but in the first half of the video you seem to be saying for someone like yourself who already owns a Line 6 device like the Stomp or who has superior (more expensive) devices that do the same or similar things, why would you want a HX One? But what about someone like myself who has none of the above mentioned devices? That doesn't seem like an inconsequential or small group of guitar players. Am I missing something or is this piece literally about why it's not for you in particular? Is your thesis that because you have pedals that have the same effects or better quality ones and have additional features not found on the HX One, you have no need for this pedal? I guess that seems too obvious to make a video about. Or maybe I'm confused about your intent, like I admitted to being possible at the beginning of my comment. I like your videos, I'm just trying to wrap my head around this one since I would consider buying one.
It’s so funny to see all the Line 6 representatives coming up with all their “design reasons” as to why the HX One can only be one effect at a time. And it’s even funnier that they literally expect people to believe their corporate salesman mumbo jumbo at face value or otherwise they start to use a very condescending, almost insulting tone & language. The HX One it’s priced the way it’s priced and it has the capabilities it has simply because Line 6 doesn’t want to cannibalize their own sales too much, not because they can’t design a better unit with a much better value for the money (implying the HX One isn’t already clunky and expensive for what it is). They designed it exactly with one thing in mind: maximizing profit by building a market echosystem that benefits them, not by maximizing the user benefits.
I think the pedal is fucking awesome, i got it today. It has a ton of different effects, and to me the ones i use most (delay, chorus, reverb, flange, OD, distortion, fuzz, etc) they all sound great to me. Of course you’re gonna have some in there that you’ll never use and sound weird, but for the price, the look, the size, the incredible tweak ability of settings, it’s an absolute steal for the price. If you bought all the one trick pony pedals this thing offers (that literally often sound no better and sometimes even worse than this), you’d be paying thousands.
I could NOT figure out any use for this thing when I saw it. Extremely confused at who this was aimed at and who would actually buy it. I just don't get where you would put this in your chain. It should at minimum run 2 effects at once. Is anyone going to replace their delay or reverb with it? If it does, it has a specific place in the chain for you, which makes the other effects kind of useless.
HX One with an expression pedal turns it into both a wah and a whammy. that alone makes sense. Obviously is not a product aimed to those who go 100% digital or, like me, use tube heads and an helix floor for all the effects and switching.
I can see it being useful as a kind of utility pedal on a board. I often need an effect for one song but don’t want a pedal on my board that just does that effect. This could replace 3 or 4 pedals and be quality too. But, many people don’t gig. For them I think they want something that does more, like the hx stomp. It’s good value and maybe cheap enough for many to buy one just to cover gaps in their fx arsenal. I was hoping for a reduced version of the hx stomp with maybe 4 slots, fewer amp models and cabs but great delays and reverbs. This isn’t getting me excited I’m afraid, but I’m sure lots of people will think it’s perfect for their needs.
Does anyone know how to save preset with the effect turned off?? Every time I change a preset the effect is always already on, and I can’t find any setting where allows me to do otherwise. WHY lol What if I wanna change a sound mid song while playing and load a big delay for the outro but not have it on already until I actually press on
It's an updated take on the M5. I imagine it to be an incredibly useful utility tool, like the role the m5 filled, albeit with a terrible volume drop and tone suck. Assume the HXOne fixes that problem.
So this is who the pedal is for -1) if say you have a Ricochet and would prefer to be able to automate the functionality via midi - and also get 300 other effects in that spot or 2) you use a matrix base loop switcher and want an all-in-one pedal to reconcile the stuff not otherwise on your board...
Geez, people spent twice as much for an Eventide H9. One effect at a time. If you view it like an H9 for an analog midi board, it makes slot of sense. Twice the effects as H9 and half the price
The only real issue i have is its price point against a used stomp i think when these have been out abit and you can nab one for $150 used it will make alot more sense
No one asked for the m5 either but apparently they sold lots. I own 4 pedals total .. no multis .. so it must be for me. I also own a couple Swiss army knives … use them all the time.
In a strange way, this little box and your great video demo(s), has opened up my eyes to trying out some single block HX Stomp presets. Less is more sometimes!
As an HX Stomp user, I'm probably not the target user. But, if I was relatively new to guitar, and someone told me I could get about 250 cool Effects in a single Pedal at about $1 per Effect, I'd wonder what looney bin they escaped from. When two of three, single-effect Pedals cost more than 250 useful Effects in one Pedal, which person is the crazy consumer? The more I think about it, this may have been a very smart move by Line 6.
Im a Stomp user myself. I could see adding one or two of these just to off load some of the DSP hungry effects and have a couple extra blocks. When you run 2 amps and cabs the DSP gets used up pretty quickly. I would prefer it to be more around the $200 mark though.
I've never understood this "no one asked for" mentality. There are tons of things out there that "no one asked for", but once people found a use for them, they fell in love with the product or they can't live without it or at very least find great value in it. The Line6 M5 was really popular, so clearly there is a market out there for single use multi effects pedals. All they did was take that concept and updated it with their new technology.
Line6 should have included the amp models in there, this way the pedal board guys that just want a simple but full fat amp simulation for running direct could use this like the Iridium or one of the UAFX pedals, except with a lot more amp options.
I use the HX Stomp. I don't need the HX One. But its obvious that they are not aiming for me. For a traditional pedalboard player who doesn't use a ton of fx, something like the HX One would be very cool. BUT I think it is too expensive. I'd rather pickup an M5. Yes, I would be missing the latest additional fx that have been added post the M series, but it would still provide the sort of functionality of the HX One at half the price. If the HX One was $150, I might actually buy one. It would provide a way to use the polyphonic fx and still have enough DSP to build a full signal chain.
I don't see the value. For $299, you can get a Source Audio Collider that does Reverb and Delay. This only does 1 effect at at time. It should have support 2 effects (call it Helix Duo). As a Helix LT user, this doesn't add enough for the price. I have use cases where I wish I had another block, esp on my A path (I have 2 amps on there). If I were going to expand my LT, I would use HX Stomp that gives me an additional 8 blocks.
I think it's a great idea. I have a headrush so I'm not exactly modeler-phobic. I also have a pedalboard and know the pain of trying to fit everything you want on. If I want a tremolo for one song only, a phaser for another and a space echo for another I have just saved 2 slots on my board by having this (and probably money too). I generally enjoy having limited options, if I'm honest. Making patches on modelers for me generally results in option paralysis and getting frustrated. I can choose from 7 different fuzzes on a modeler or buy one fuzz and squeeze what I can out of it. This isn't silly. People made unbelievable records with limited equipment as the norm until recently.
I got the impression this was like the HX FX so no amp modelling. This might detract from the intention of the product to reel in some knob twisting pedal purists (Strymon meris SA style) (also I love my individual FX pedals for the quick knob twist so it wasn't meant as an insult) but to have it do 1 amp/can model or amp only for when you have a Poweramp as well might add to its flexibility and then people can twist knobs on FX pedals, so it ould be an iridium Friedman competitor or the 1 FX competitor. But for more than half the price in AU ($649) of an HX stomp ($900-$1100) when a great poly pitch FX like ehx pitch fork in a nano format is less than $300. If it was more towards $400 for the flexibility and had the option for amp modelling (it would then gain the criticism for not having dual amp or something so I can understand why it's not there) I think it would be more compelling. But i have the small stomp and a helix so less interested esp for the price. I'd recommend the hx stomp over it everytime even as a 2 fx unit (twice the size) to compete with the Strymon meris SA UA style pedals. IMHO
I’m gonna be honest here, I would way rather have $130 zoom MS50G, which can do multiple effects at once, rather than this HX one… I love my Zoom and use it live professionally all on its own, several times a month. My pedal board is all Strymon midnight series (with the stryfecta), and I have had people ask me what is on my board when I was only using the Zoom. This has the flaw of the Eventide H9… very useful, great effects, but only one at a time, making it just a subpar version of many stand alone pedals.
I see the value i would buy one if I wasn’t economy poor, just offloading a complex reverb can open up the rest of your stomp or hx effects. If it loaded amp blocks or even IR blocks the value would be much much greater. Most people don’t have 35 different drive pedals to choose from I’m not surprised this isn’t for you
I think it's just Line 6's attempt to stay relevant. They haven't released anything unique hardware for Helix/HX in a long time. I believe they're just looking for new ways to appeal to a broader audience, especially people who have a one-shot Swiss Army knife without getting too complicated. I think they're just trying to squeeze what they can out of the current Helix series technology before the next inevitable step which will require people to buy a new flagship. I mean, the Helix series started in 2015, and as the firmware update requirements increase, the current hardware will become obsolete. This might be a smart gamble for them, as it may help them gain a broader audience for Helix products, especially since they're 8 years in on that series, and a new flagship will likely only be a few years around the corner. I will say this, though: the price is a bit high for what it is. There are too many competitors at this price range who will likely beat this out in terms of quality and overall value.
If it had a tuner and could do even 1 amp&Cab model it would find it's way onto many working guitarists pedalboards. Replace your tuner pedal with a do-it-all effects unit and direct option in case of amp failure.
I wouldn't be surprised if future updates leverage the DSP in this by adding two-effect blocks. Which would be nice if it were rolled into HX Stomp updates. That was a trick Yamaha used in the Magicstomp, which was another one-effect multi, but had drive, reverb, delay, or amps combined with other effects as options.
I'm buying one tomorrow and I also have an M5
Why are people acting like people don't buy 200+ dollar one-off effects all the freaking time? Like... Chase Bliss just dropped a $399 Boost/EQ. Seriously. This thing is like 250 pedals in one. It's good.
Consider this: People purchase one-effect pedals all the time. At that price, it's a great fill-in-the-blanks pedal.
Exactly 👍
I'll check them out :)@@TheDilligan
Or the Hotone Stomp, I would also add.
Where the heck are 300 bucks just a bit more than a drop? the drop goes for 150.
@@adriansoul7223 not widely available where I live. Only can find them used. Guess there’s a bigger gap in most countries 🤷
@@adriansoul7223except is limited in use and is not all that powerful. For recording? Sure. But for intensive use live? Nope.
I’m sure it won’t be long until dual algorithm blocks are available e.g. delay/reverb, reverb/tremolo etc.
Shoot this out with the Zoom MS50G. I think the Zoom is way better value and the tones hold up well.
Is this more of an H9 competitor? Comes with many times more sounds and is less expensive.
HX One is a great pedal. It only got criticism cuz it wasn't what people expected it to be and were disappointed. The pedal itself is quite good.
I may be as thick as a whale omelette. But if you're bothered by it only having one effect at a time, isn't the Guitar Pod Express the way to go?
Not for many specially those have multi effects. But just right for me, a fill in pedal!
Why are you surprised?
M5 was a huge success
The only surprise is that they really didn't improve much on the design
Henry Ford famously said that if he'd asked people what they wanted they'd have replied "faster horses". Line6 is a world class company, and they know what they're doing. Their product people will have done their research and validated the market for this latest gizmo. It will most probably sell a ton of units whether anyone was asking for it or not. I'm not in the target market, but I'm almost certain I'll pick one up from the used market when 2nd hand prices get down around the $200 mark just to try out. These things are toys for 99% of consumers after all.
Notice that they said, "not the H90". That was very intentional. The H9, is the target here. More stuff for less coin. It's a win.
I think once these have been around a while and they start selling on Reverb used closer to $200, I'll probably get one. I like the fact that it runs off 9v.
I'm hoping people sell their M5 to get this and I can snag an M5 for like $80.
$400 is too much for this pedal. Holy shit way too pricey
Why does Line 6 have to fulfill your personal wish list every time it releases a product?
hi John, what do you think about using HX one with Tonex, instead of using with Hx stomp. thank you
Personally, I feel like I'm almost always going to want more than one effect at a time - Delay and Reverb for example - so HX one for me is a bit too limited?
thank you very much for your kind and valuable respone, better to consider using Tonex with HX Stomp with external footswitch to expand the options then
Gonna sell my Digitech drop for this pedal
".....grumpy, microcosmic, short-sighted corners of the internet" ???
Translation: If you don't see the value of this product, it's because there is something wrong with you.
Interesting way to characterize your customers.
No shit. It’s not our fault Line 6 drags their feet like fucking turtles to come out with something new. they still cash in on the DL4.
I have the same issue. I never use the poly capo block because it uses way too much CPU. And I can't include all the things I want in my patch.
This is targeted to h9 users and the like and bring them closer to the helix ecosystem.. which is likely to drop its new version soon, or another great update. The h9, let's face it, while still and awesome unit Eventide essentially abandoned those users with the release of the h90. This unit, like the H9, is best used with a midi capable looper/switch system, where you can change the order in the fx chain (think gigrig and the like).
this would be killer, if you could combine two fx. even if just simple ones
Same reason why I don’t own an H9. Well, that and the fact that it sounds far too digital for my taste
I’m in the same boat. As soon as I saw it I wanted one.
Hotone ampero mini cheaper and more features
It’s the same price as the updated DL4. I’d choose this over the DL4 since it has more options.
Everyone should have a DL4 though just cause… Even if you have a Stomp. Those are like furniture.
"too expensive for a one at a time effect device"
But the fact is the HX One and H9 do exactly the same thing. And the Eventide is 3 times the price ! Even if it's better quality effects, nobody seems to point the fact it's still a VERY expensive "one effect at a time" pedal..
I am buying one tomorrow.
I agree
I heard that it has auto position switching if you run 4 cables.
If you need just one effect at a time, and have a good drive pedal it's fine otherwise
For studio use also, very useful.
Just buy a HX Effects.
@@NedJeffery A new HX Effects at 299$. Tell me where and i buy it!
@@ZaneQuebec you don't get everything you want for the price you want. You get them for the price they are worth.
I bet synthesists buy a ton of these.
I really don't get the hate this is having. Like I can for sure see multiple applications for this, even with something like a stomp.
Seems like Line 6’s late response to the Eventide H9. Nice engineering though
Stereo, MIDI, known platform/ecosystem, regular updates, relatively small form factor - H9 killer for less money than a used H9 Max.
Definitely. I’d 100% invest in at least an HX Stomp if I were you, though🙌🏼
This! They needed to add the capability of one more effect, two total. Doesn't the H90 only do two at a time? Anyway, call it the HX TWO!
Tim Pierce addresses this in his vid. His point was that session guys don't have the time to fiddle around with menu diving. Traditionalists also aren't interested in the menu diving stuff either. Since Line6 discontinued the M series of stomps I think this is to fill that gap.
But, it still has a menu? So it doesn't really address that use case?
@@johnnathancordy I haven't used it, but the menu on this is much simpler. Scroll through to the effect and go. The other modellers are far more fiddly with more parameters etc to get things setup. I'd say just watch Tim's video on it. It even shows a bunch of session guys who use the M9 because of the immediacy and simplicity of getting the sounds.
If I didn’t have an H9 I’d consider it. I guess it has a smaller footprint so it could be a replacement.
I’m seriously considering it. Simpler interface, and no doubt several updates to come in the future.
This really should have supported 2-3 blocks at once. Might as well cram a HX stomp on your board and get 8 blocks....
No one asked for? No!!! I've emailed them about something like this for several years .. the HX FX is way too much ..
WHY lol
What if I wanna change a sound mid song while playing and load a big delay for the outro but not have it on already until I actually press on
Still use my M5 this would have been a good replacement if it was $199
It's an updated take on the M5. I imagine it to be an incredibly useful utility tool, like the role the m5 filled, albeit with a terrible volume drop and tone suck. Assume the HXOne fixes that problem.
It's for Tom Bukovac and Tim Pierce. (and for the non-pros to complain about)
So this is who the pedal is for -1) if say you have a Ricochet and would prefer to be able to automate the functionality via midi - and also get 300 other effects in that spot or 2) you use a matrix base loop switcher and want an all-in-one pedal to reconcile the stuff not otherwise on your board...
It’s a next gen M5…. Which I’ve seen on lots of boards. I.e There’s a market.
No one asked for the m5 either but apparently they sold lots. I own 4 pedals total .. no multis .. so it must be for me.
I also own a couple Swiss army knives … use them all the time.
My first thought was this is the heir to the m5,, which seems to be still much beloved by some otherwise analog rig players. Still that ain’t me.
In a strange way, this little box and your great video demo(s), has opened up my eyes to trying out some single block HX Stomp presets. Less is more sometimes!
Too pricey.
If they go down to $200, I'll grab one.
Does it do any single thing better than a $300 effect pedal? That's the rub.
So line 6 is getting greedy. The priced this so high they had to raise the price of the hx stomp.
To me this is like the Eventide H9 max at a cheaper price point
3:02 thought you were going to say autistic
You mean , Obviously!
This remind me of the Eventide H9.
Personally, I've been waiting for exactly this pedal (and I already have an HX stomp and an HX effects.)
…I don’t recall asking for it, but I did ask for shred chops, and they haven’t arrived yet. Maybe I’ll check it out.
I'm wondering if I could use the full 6 button looper with a midi switch 🤔
You can 🙌🏼
@@newcomer87 oh that's awesome. I'm probably gonna use it for reverbs but a full featured compact looper is pretty awesome
If this is an upgrade to the m5 and smaller, this is Totally for me!
What material is the enclosure? Metal or synthetic/plastic? Footswitch and knob/controller feel? Can you read the display while standing above it?
