    And that, Mike, is precisely why, a few years ago, I bought a used Line 6 M3 unit to go on my pedalboard - the ability to add something unusual, rare or outrageous to my sound, without filling up even more space on the board. Or getting a bigger board. Not gonna upgrade to this, mind - the M3 still hits all of my not-so-subtle requirements admirably.

    I've always been somewhat hesitant to dive into this because, as an amp user (without being a purist, though) with a basic collection of pedals, I've never felt the urge to switch to an 'all-in-one' solution and somehow replace all the gear I've painstakingly gathered over time. However, with a continued desire to expand my sound palette, I now feel like this might be a relevant fit for me. Your video has left me feeling much more destined for it and much more inspired to give this product a try. So thanks for that !

      Honestly, as a touring guitarist and audio engineer. The only reason to move to an all in one thing is if you're traveling. The beautiful thing is no wires that can go wrong. And cheap an easy travel. If you're giging with an amp and don't have your own guitar techs and tour tech crew with you. Traveling with an amp is not it. Nowadays all the touring guys do it with the all in ones. It's basically a relay midi switcher that has the effects built into it. It saves a lot of money for the none touring guitarist as well. You can essentially have a pro midi relay switcher with a bunch of pedals for a 3rd of the cost. Now the only reason to switch as well is if you're not using any pedals that are unique. For example I have a hybrid board. Meaning my dry is analog for my fuzz, plasma coil, and octave pedal. But all the wet effects are being dealt with by the fm3. The best chorus delay and reverb pedals are already digital. Where the digital fails 90% of the time is dirty tones. like solid state amps. They don't react the same for soft gain. However if you're a metal or grunge player you'll be in heaven. Also the people who like staying on clean with no distortion that's where the solid state and all in one rigs excel. Understand that the Fm3, Helix, Kemper, and Headrush boards and racks were never meant to for the in home guitarist. That was never the target, they were made for the idea of traveling and performing live.

      I would also like to note that you'll see people complain about the recording process with all in ones when they need to change the tone. Keep in mind none of these guys are trained audio engineers. So when they complain it's because they hate the process of being their own engineer. The fact that you're even in the room during the re-amp process is crazy. That's the engineers job to do behind your back. (Don't tell him we re-recorded his guitar parts through different amps for a better sound because he will get pissed off) As a trained audio engineer I hardly ever have to re-amp. Most of the time it's because people aren't mixing properly (EQ goes a long way) or they aren't tracking correctly. A good tracking engineer is half the battle. Since musicians are having to where all the hats without the proper training, they will bash gear when really its a lack of knowledge. Moral of the story if you don't see yourself touring or playing shows. Enjoy your amp and simple set up. My brother is starting from scratch now. Because he isn't playing shows like me or touring he over complicated his rig. He feels he is tweaking more than playing. And for him who just plays for fun in his apartment. The all in ones will kill the plug and play fun. Don't let TH-cam scare you into something that you don't need. I toured once with a head and cab sold it at the end of the tour 😂 When I tour with a crew I do take my FR speaker for stage noise but if I have to take everything myself for a tour that stays at home. 🤣

    It's cool to get 250+ Effects at that price. Even though the unit can only play one effect at a time, a Line 6 Rep pointed out that there are some paired Effects that combine controls into one Effect, like Delay with Reverb, and Distortion with Boost. The HX One would be even more useful if pairing Effects became standard, kind of like Twin Pedals.

      Exactly how I feel. You have collected 10 effects that you absolutely love. Those make up your core tone. But every once in a while you want something totally different, like a bit crusher, but you don't want to create room for a bit crusher you will use once every 6 months. This is perfect.

  • @JoshMetcalfe
    @JoshMetcalfe ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The HX One can be any type of pedal, but the position on most boards will be locked in, probably limiting which pedal type it can be. I'm all in favor of the "just try stuff" but still, re-wiring the pedal board could be frustrating if you're changing its position often. I really like the idea of expanding the HX Stomp (or even the POD Go - with some additional devices) with the HX One. It's the $300 DSP upgrade. Use the HX One in an FX loop and use MIDI to set the pedal type. Now you can get the pedal type you want anywhere in the chain.
    To me this could be a good option for POD Go users as it will have all of the HX effects, including some the POD Go doesn't have due to DSP limitation, (e.g., Clawthorn Drive, etc.) The challenge with the POD Go is its lack of MIDI features. It can't send MIDI commands to the HX One on its own (no Command Center or MIDI out option). So you'll need a couple MIDI devices, one to stomp on and the other to operate as a USB host to send MIDI to POD Go and 5 pin MIDI to the HX One. These devices exist, but it's another $150 from what I've seen. So a less ideal solution for POD Go users, but still possible.

    • @EricMarinko
      @EricMarinko ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You can already run the HX One in mono using 4 cable method and have its position in your rig change dynamically from preset to preset. Eg: poly capo at the front of your chain and then when you switch to delay or reverb it's in your loop instead without any additional hardware or re-wiring.

    • @AlanH2B
      @AlanH2B 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm really late to this party, but I use a RJM PBC6X pedal switcher, which allows me to set the pedal order per preset. As a result the HX One on my board isn't "locked in". For example when I set it as a fuzz, it goes before my overdrive, and when it's modulation/delay, it goes after, depending on the sound I'm going for.

    The Internet gets so confused. This is an effects pedal. You plug your guitar into it - then plug it into your amp. An effects pedal. There are tons of effect pedals on the market that do one thing. This does one thing - with the option to change that one thing as needed. It's an effect pedal. I got one (on sale) and have been having a lot of fun trying different effects. I think it's great.

    The ability to control with midi means I can select any effect to go along with existing presets - and it would need to be placed at the right location in the signal chain for each preset. A lot of programming but once it's done you never need to touch the HX1 - it's just an enormous library of effects that you can pull from with any midi controller.

    Thanks for the information. I’m so new to this world and have made do for three years with a Fender Mustang GTX50 as my everything (similar concept to big brother ToneMaster Pro, but controlled by my iPhone). I just gravitate toward clean tones with a touch of reverb. This HX One pedal seems like it would go great as a chameleon-like add on to any amp system. You’ve got the set up you know and love and … just one more thing.

  • @dougfishback3116
    @dougfishback3116 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm using the Tonex One as my amp modeler, and that unit has perfectly usable (though basic) onboard compression, noise gate, and reverb. So right away, that has covered three effects slots that I'd normally use. I'm not a guy to stack a pitch shifter into a phaser into a delay in a situation where I'd be using a board, so a single-slot multi-effects box lets me dial up a chorus here for that '80s cover, or a delay that is preset for a particular song, or maybe that phaser that I don't really care about stacking into an elaborate stereo studio sound in that situation.
    It comes down to whether your application needs depth in a one-box footprint versus depth plus breadth in a larger unit. There are applications where the compact footprint and on-the-fly simplicity of the HX One are advantages.
    Users also will want to pay attention to the power draw of multi-effects units, since more sophisticated units need more juice. The TC Plethora X3, for example, draws 600mA at 9V, which exceeds the capacity of 500mA power supplies. HX One will be happy with 500mA. Power requirements aren't necessarily the deciding factor for a purchase like this, but it's part of the equation.
    For Line 6, as you noted, this product also is an accessible gateway into the HX world. If the sounds impress, there is plenty of opportunity for users to upsell into other products. Fair play all around.
    Thanks for the video.

    it's perfect for my live rig. i've got my board down to 4 pedals as a result (always on, hx one, dist, delay). Now I've got a phaser, harmonic tremolo, and 2nd delay, reverb etc all in one now. Obviously it can only use one at a time but it takes off the pedals that were used only sparingly during a set. And also there's weird effects in there for 30 second weird sounds that i wouldn't get to do on my previous board, mainly pitch, filter and freeze stuff.

  • @BigDancin
    @BigDancin ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don't understand all the debate about the purpose of this pedal. Get it if you can imagine a use for it, or otherwise not. I am not a Helix user (but I am open to being one if they finally update it in a Helix 2 with true amp capture and modern touches). I preordered this because it will serve as a midi-controlled chameleon pedal on my travel/practice pedalboard, where I am using Tonex for my amp sounds. And really, I will use it there as a chameleon MOD pedal (for chorus, flanger, phaser, univibe, and filter effects) placed before the Tonex amp pedal . I already have verb and delay covered on the board with other pedals, so I don't need more fx blocks. The HX One just helps keep the pedal count down while not sacrificing sound options for a song here and there that needs something specific.

    Really seems like something you take with you if you prefer regular old stomp boxes and have some effects that don’t get used often or require different voicings but would rather not buy and take along multiple pedals that won’t get much use. Saves money and space on a board and gets you a configurable pedal. Great for the person that may need different kinds of flangers, fuzzes, etc for specific songs but otherwise doesn’t want to go out and buy different types of these pedals. Or as Mike said much less verbosely, a utility pedal.

It pays to have pedals that can quickly change your whole tone in drastic ways. I traded my empress zoia which I may regret one day but that solved all my problems for a while. It can only do one effect at a time and by doing more it would start to compete with L6 higher end pedals.
    At first I was seriously underwhelmed by the fact it can only do one effect at €319. But price has come down a bit and I started to look at this unit again...
    Looking for a reverb and flanger is what made me do so. L6 was a bit under my radar and was unaware of the quality products they make. Going through some reviews as having read the manual am tempted to buy one for €259 (Eventide quality at a third of the price). The morphing feature is something really nice for soundscaping/ambient kind of effect. And if so I'll be using more than just reverb and flanger (tuner 😅).

    Some of the ranting and raving about this, from well viewed guitar channels, is either intellectually dishonest, or a little ignorant to the loyal following the M5 has. It still lives on tons of pro boards, including by many well known/big time players. This is clearly an updated and more versatile replacement for the M5. For folks claiming "no one asked for this" or yammering on about "who would actually use this" I believe most are being sensational for the sake of it, and creating click bait. I've owned a Helix and an HX Stomp. Neither were my thing. I'm a tube amp guy and that's not likely to change. I don't want to spend hours tweaking those platforms, to sound like my amps and a few pedals. I prefer WYSIWYG in my workflow, or for just relaxing to play. This fits a niche for me, because it gives me a ton of options, for that one off song, or when i'm just in the mood to throw some random effect on to jam, but only takes the space of a regular pedal, using standard 9V power. I'd wager these will sell like hotcakes, because (and this may be shocking to some) not everyone is all in on modeling/profiling, not everyone needs 7 blocks of modulation that no one in the audience will hear, and not everyone wants to give significant real-estate and specialized power supplies space in their rig.

    So your assessment at about the 7:00 mark is just completely wrong/inaccurate. I’m a longtime Helix owner/user and I will be adding these to my gigging boards for more than one of my gigging projects.
    You it would NEVER be something a Helix user would want or consider. Many Helix users are not solely reliant on the devices for everything. There are multiple projects I do where I only need one or two effects for the whole night, so it makes no sense to even bring my HX Stomp XL, let alone my Helix. From a power standpoint alone, I can power at least three HX One’s from my power block on my board(s) and not have to use multiple taps or connectors.
    Also when stage space is at a premium, the smaller the board, the better in certain scenarios. This helps there as well. If you’re doing a fly date and cartage is an issue, a small board also makes sense. Sure there’s the Stomp but this unit from a board effects position can be much more flexible.
    We should avoid discounting a large subset of users before this thing hits the shelf…

    Congratulation for the Helix - that's what I want ($1600) . . . .but I'm a $497 guy . . .so the Line 6 Pod Go is ok - you'll love it, but you really want to spend $1600 for a Helix!!!!

    one pedal to rule them all 'cause it only does 1 thing @ a time lol this pedal is for stomp box heads like me who want to stay on this side of the multi effects line. take my money! I'm going to midi some tweaked eq's to quickly balance things out when I switch guitars, and also do some special modulation things

    I think it's an interesting idea, but I don't see why I'd spend half the cost of an HX Effects to run one (or two, when paired) effects at a time. The HX Effects can do like six effects in any order, and has snapshots, too.

    If you went out and even bought cheap copies of every effect in this thing you’d be looking at thousands, and the helix effects are quite honestly good enough for any application. Although I wish you could load the amp models, even the amps by themselves with a separate IR loader

    It reminds of the underrated Hotone Xtomp. It instantly becomes whatever you need from dist, reverb, delay, modulation, and preset combinations of them all. The Hotone Xtomp is very underrated tho..... *Off Topic* man do I hate that pretentious hipster guitar shaking nonsense🤣🤣

      @@18JR78What gets me is how so many players slide up or down the neck in between phrases for no reason, like they're trying to be hendrix or something...once you start to notice it, it's hard to ignore

    • @baileywatts1304
      @baileywatts1304 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is thed Hotone Xtomp a MIDI device? I am definitely not going to put an amp on my phone to control a guitar pedal, but if I can do it all through Ableton live that's a different story. An app can control one pedal, and that's ok, but if I can use ableton to sync up my modulation with another player's modulation pedals that's worth it to me.

    If you’re prepared to pay over £200 for an overdrive or reverb pedal etc, you must be totally happy that it does just one thing once. This thing does one thing 250 times. Get over it.

    "An appetizer". "A gateway". People don't consume gear this way. Such stupid terms to describe something that is 3 hundred dollars. The fact that you can't make effects chains on a single patch on this thing makes it largely useless for live use.

  • @cropcircle5693

    I can not figure out one good reason for this thing. The "I use an amp" player probably doesn't need a single expensive pedal that has a single mediocre use at a time. It isn't a multi effects pedal, it's a singe effect pedal that you can change to another single effect at a time. Not really very useful. Especially when you consider that most of the effects are not on most peoples list of "best effects." The reverbs are meh, the delays are not "wow" impressive, same for the modulation effects. They're all great to have in one place and programable and available to use in conjunction with all the others. I love my HX Stomp, but I love it because it does all the stuff.
    And the "Flux" thing just sounds like snapshots and we get 3 of those on the Stomp so, WTF?
    It's confusing because I would think that they'd want to put something like this out as an addition for someone like myself who will use the effects loop on the HX to get more out of it. But even that makes no sense because it's the same effects I already have and I would use up a block to "send" and then I'd get one effect I already have in the one slot I gave up to get it. There's no reason for anyone who already has one of their products to buy this.
    They could have put out some next level mad science delay looper that integrates into their products seamlessly and also stands alone, and I'd get one yesterday.

      @Metallex ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got the HX Effects and it's phenomenal but you get so much more usability. I really can't figure out why you'd get the HX1 aside from budget reasons, but then you could get something like a Mooer or Behringer.

    • @SHAKEYMEISTER
      @SHAKEYMEISTER 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's for those who have a pedal board with some o/d pedals and delay for example and don't want to take up extra space with a slew of other pedals they may only use in a few songs . It's why many pro players have an M5 . Extra delay , chorus , flange , phaser , harmoniser even synth sounds are all there . Ideal for session players or those in cover bands . The flux feature also means you can go from a slap back delay to a longer one for a solo with the tap of a button.
      Plus it's now only £199 !
      No brainer .

    The first effect he demoed sounded horrible. Was strangled and the tone was not getting through the mix very well without without changing into that firecracker sound. Some of the effects are decent enough I guess. The distortions just sound kind of bad through this.
