  • @Thomas_Burnett
    @Thomas_Burnett ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I find this years releases from Patek ‘Lazy’. The 5373P is as you pointed out just a 5372P with its dial flipped 180 degrees. How much effort went into that?! Hardly any I feel. Even less effort went into the 5811, lol. Thierry Stern said something to the extent of Patek don’t make much money from steel Watches so should concentrate on precious metals but, to just re-release a discontinued Watch (albeit 1mm bigger) seems very lame I feel.
    My favourite Patek is the 5320G (even better with the past cream dial than the current Salmon dial). The numerals look great and the syringe hands really top off a beautiful perpetual calendar. I’ll never be able to afford one but, it’s still nice to admire them in the window.

      The Nautilus interest does suck the life out of so many models in their collection (sadly) great that they offer that variety though. It blows me away that they have such a broad category too. Like we think about Oyster perpetuals and Rolex's entire collection but with PP, it's everything from time only to Perp Cals, Rattrapantes, World Times etc. etc. It's mad! Having a fondness for square-ish dials/cases, I naturally gravitate towards the Nautilus. If this had been made by, I dunno, Seiko or some other Swiss brand, I'd still be drawn to it because the overall design is just that good.
    I give credit to Patek for not wanting to be defined by a single popular model. Unfortunately celebrity culture and social media has, like you said, created a herd mentality causing a superficial demand for a product that is more than just a status symbol for online clout chasers.

    Nice one! I think the 5811 is the Nautilus perfected - the clamshell case so refined now. But it's not a watch I particularly like - to me it manages to lack both beauty and utility. The Royal Oak holds dynamic tension, edge and interest - a spontaneous creation of genius; the Nautilus is round, plump, too comfortable by half and over refined. Typical Patek design - quite '90s. Their design for me is best when it is complication and watchmaker led (the 5370 is a great example), then they can create staggering works of near perfection - designs arrived at organically and by the necessity of watchmakers. But give them space (and a marketing brief) and they have to innovate with line - then you get heavy, lumpen, slow duffers like the Aquanaut. People would slate that if Seiko had dialled it in (but I don't think they would!).

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a part to mention in the video about the Royal Oak (but decided to leave it out because it distracted a bit too much from the topic) But they are two very different machines. That RO bracelet and case sold me the many time's when I've worn them in the past. Industrial, rugged, hard-edged. But I do kinda dig the streamlining that went into the Nautilus at the same time. It doesn't draw your attention as much as it's cousin 😉 But when Patek does Patek... ah, great machines all round. Thank you as always James!

      A great comment for me. I always thought the nautilus was the one. Then I tried one on followed by a Royal Oak and the latter was king. By a surprising country mile. I absolutely agree that even though this watch is undoubtedly nice patek make other watches that are on another level.

      @@ID-Guy Funny, I nearly avoided the RO comparison too! My point is not to criticise the Nautilus relatively, but absolutely! Of course, a well made watch, nearing peak refinement, but great design seldom needs iterative development and it is almost never 'safe.' The "return" of the nauty... yawn. It still has pin & sleeve bracelet (see seiko), yet is priced even higher. Omega makes (much) better sports watches. I considered purchasing the 5712 a few years ago... when I tried it on, it was not a remarkable experience, and I did not purchase it. The 5130, on the other hand~ took my breath away. From today's catalogue: I would purchase the 5205 at retail price only. But I'm not playing games to spend my money so it looks like A. Lange & Sohne will be my next purchase.

    ID Guy! You look like you escaped from mass at boarding school to make this video. Does Patel know of the risks you take?
