Hello from St. Clair, Michigan!! We are across the St. Clair River (at the mouth of Lake Huron) from Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. I love this state (Michigan) and all her beautiful waterways including 4 out of 5 of the Great Lakes and 2 major rivers connecting Lake Erie, Detroit River, Lake St. Clair (a wee lake in between the rivers), St. Clair River and Lake Huron. All licated on the east side of the state. We have many many parks along all the waterways these big freighters call home. The largest are 1,004 feet (just over 306 meters), carry 80,000 long tons of cargo. These bulk freighters carry iron ore, limestone, coal, grain, and things like that in their cavernous holds. The boom arm length wise across the deck allows the ships to off load its own cargo. If you are watching the TH-cam videos the ships are going into the Duluth, Minnesota docks. Duluth is at the far western edge of Lake Superior. These ships travel across Lake Superior through the Soo Locks (at the eastern edge of Lake Superior). Once through the locks the ships pass into Lake Huron or turn west into Lake Michigan for ports of call like Chicago. The average speed of these freighters is 14-18 miles per hour (23-29 kph). The journey from eastern Lake Erie to Duluth take on average of 10 days to 2 weeks. There are 13 lake freighters of at least 1,000 feet long and many others that vary in length from a few hundred to 740 feet. The super freighters or any ship in excess of 740 feet cannot enter into Lake Ontario because the Welland Canal system of locks east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada are not long enough to allow passage. I hope I've given you some cool things to know about our beloved freighters and beautiful lakes and state. I am thrilled to see other folks enjoying the ships I am privileged to see everyday. Take care and 1 long and 2 short, a Master's Salute I give to you.

Just rewatched this. Brrrrr the Michipocontin looks so majestic gliding with the ice floes.Beautiful winter scenery depicting a picture perfect Minnesota Lake Superior. Michi has stolen my heart over the last couple years. Love her regal presence ❤

As kids we used to run to the back fence to watch the freight trains go by - they were close like these ships! We'd try to get there before the engine had gone by, so we could wave, and they'd sound the horn. I liked watching the adults in this video running with the same excitement to see these ships pass by. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful. I try to watch a few every day, especially loving the salutes from the ships and the bridge answering.

@@dashjeffreys6998 I'm originally from Buffalo, but have been in Florida for the past 25 years. I'm totally over the heat and humidity, so looking to move a bit further north. Maybe not back to BUF, but definitely somewhere with a real 4 seasons like the Carolinas or Tennessee.

This is an incredible sight. And still so much snow!? I hear Gordon Lightfoot in my head as I watch this. Thanks for posting for those of us who may never get to experience such an event.

April in the great lakes is always a crap shoot. You can have everything from a blizzard to a nice warm spring day within 48 hours of each other.
