From what I've been told, the reason she declined is because the Met insisted that she make her debut as the Queen of the Night, whereas she preferred to debut in other roles such as Sophie, Gilda, Rosina or Zerbinetta. Personally I think that she was much more convincing in the latter roles. And she was the ultimate Gräfin Zedlau, Fanny Elssler, Gabriele, Hanna, Josepha, Rita, Elisabeth and many other opera and operetta roles.
Her voice maybe wasn't the biggest. But definitely projected and carried very well. And her timbre is stellar. And for a soprano of her tessitura, her mid and low range is astoundingly warm and full. But also her high range was impressively colorful and even. And her diction! Her voice was really something special.
And to add to this very convincing knowledge, this woman has huge and loud voice because during her time, they sang without microphone, so no doubt her voice is loud and huge and clear, am I right?
No. Almost all her film and TV appearances were done with the playback technique, meaning that the singing was first recorded in a studio with microphone. On stage she just opens her mouth to a pre-recorded sound track, pretending to sing (the synchronisation is not always perfect). Sometimes it is a recording made for the specific occasion, other times it is a recording made many years ago. Her voice was NOT large. If it sounds large, it is because she sang into a microphone.

I think this was a show famous in German TV It was named „ Erkennen Sie die Melodie „ ( Do you recognize this Aria) Scenes of famous Operas where staged and costumes in other Operas The Quiz anticipant had to guess what Aria was sung and what ( not matching) classical Staging was seen Obviously singing is EStrano From La Traviata. But Staging was not Hallstein sung fantastic for here size of voice YMO

Anyone who says her voice wasn’t a decent size is used to hearing people wobble their way through operas. It’s SO healthy

I just enjoy her so much! Here she sings with a more robust sound.....amazing!
