One American saying Canada was a 3rd world country in the 90’s doesn’t or didn’t make it so. Canada wasn’t the only country in a depression in the 90’s. Love this channel. It makes me proud to be a Canadian.
The irony of seeing them promote, and literally wanting go back to living in the 1960-70s; racism has been on the rise, people are losing rights and freedoms, their financial stability and growth massacred by this unrelenting corruption for “national defence” corporation.
I was born in 1960 and the 80's and 90's were great years for me. I actually had better financial years then than I have today. I certainly wouldn't describe those years as 3rd world conditions.
Most people in general didn't feel the effects of the downturn, but at a fiscal level (debt : GDP) Canada wasn't in great shape. Mulroney, was following his buddies (Reagan & Thatcher) in destructive economic policies, which is a good part of the reason, why the Conservatives were nearly obliterated in the 1993 election. John Turner as the new Finance Minister of the Liberal Government, cut government spending and the government added new policies for productivity to help turn the ship around.
So proud to be Canadian and was a young adult in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Would have never thought anyone considered Canada to be an honorary third world country….lending rates were high but strong economic policies seemed to calm things down within a few years. Love living here and have always vacationed here as well, from Newfoundland to Victoria and more! A great country with diversity in community, climate, population and technology, lucky to be here.
I was born in the early 70s and I certainly wouldn't say Canada was 3rd world in the 80's and 90's. Of course there were problems, but there always are.
I agree with similar comments regarding the recession of the 80’s and 90’s. For the average Canadian we only noticed the high lending rates for our mortgages. Our first home purchased in 1991 had a 13.75% interest rate. When we renewed 5 yrs later it was 6%. Otherwise we didn’t feel any more financial hardship than usual.
That comment about Canada being almost a third world country in the 90' s is nonsense!! There was a mild recession, but otherwise things were as usual!
My grandfather was a station agent in the 1930s he sent hobos riding the rails to his home for my grandmother to feed them I don’t think the nineties was as bad my youngest sister was born in the sixties she was my mothers free baby thanks to Mr. Douglas and Medicare. My MIL said the breadlines were long in Montreal when she was a child she said don’t envy the people who have more than you turn around and you will see a long line of people who have a harder life than you do. 😮👋🏻🧝🏼🤚🏻
So sorry but Canada is absolutely heading towards third world status. It's a disgusting place to live and when the health care gets as bad as it is now, you are headed towards disaster. This country is nonsense.
We definitely have our problems. The thing is, the only way to fix problems is to face them. We are doing that. We can not hide from our past, nor hide the bad things about our present.
The US and North America in general were all in a bit of a free fall economically in late 80s early 90s. The third world remarks were more af a threat from Wall Street to get our financial act together. Canada did this and in any event was never branded a third world country per say. We made it through with flying colours.
The comments about the 80s and 90s took me by surprise, and I’m a Canadian in my 60s. It’s always been an awesome country and a first rate place to live.
@ 15:41 , I work with a tile guy that was sponsored from Syria. His english is improving. He is one of the few that start early, like me. He has his core family here, but wants to bring more family members here. He works so hard, but is always a great guy to deal with. All he wants is an opportunity, and he is going to start his own company soon. That is Canada, in a nutshell.
I live here and mind = blown: Longest distance from east to west: 5,514 km from Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador, to the Yukon and Alaska boundary. Longest distance from north to south: 4,634 km from Cape Columbia (Ellesmere Island), Nunavut, to Middle Island (Lake Erie), Ontario.
I love travelling but I am always really happy to come home to Canada. Even with inflation and political issues we are currently facing, I still think it is a great country with incredible diversity in regards to the people who live here and the geography.
Justin Trudeau was considered a 'surprise' for prime minister was his atypical background compared to other politicians. Justin has a degree in Literature from McGill University and an Education degree from University of BC and was a High School teacher for many years. His father, Pierre Eliot Trudeau, exposed Justin to politics from day one. Pierre was a very charismatic, sometimes flippant and arrogant leader. It was pretty much to the Trudeau brand / name recognition that led to Justin's rise in the Liberal Party and into the Prime Ministers office. Also, his predecessor, Steven Harper (Conservative) had dropped in popularity leading to the classic, 'he's been there long enough, let's give somebody else a try'.
You should look up Tareq Hadhad! A Syrian refugee who came to Canada with some of his family seeking safety and peace, and hoping to continue with his career path in becoming a doctor. His father had run a very successful chocolate business, with a factory in Syria, but it was destroyed by bombs. His father decided to restart his chocolate business out of their little kitchen in their new home of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, with Tareq's and their new community's help. And it was a huge success! And, Tareq found a new path in public speaking, and also, love. He got married... Um, 2 years ago, I think? ❤❤❤❤ It's a wonderful story. You should check it out.
As a Canadian who has like you been an expat in Asia for many years, I think tolerance and humanitarian values are critical, but sometimes overstepped by immigrants not interested in integrating, but cleverly taking advantage of their new freedoms and support. Cheers mate!
Yes this video is a bit outdated and some of our high rankings have slipped a little the last few years but when compared to most countries we are still in the top in most metrics.
JT is trashing our economy, he has more then doubled the cost of housing, food and transportation. He needs to go before Canada is bankrupt! As of now your great great grand kids will be paying off the debt he has added to the deficits.
The same ones who support Poisonlievre. Bless their souls, they don't know what they're doing and what they're getting into. But Canada will recover like it has recovered from McDonald, Diefenbaker, Harper and Don Cherry.
I lived through the 80’s and 90’s and as usual a news organization is overblowing things. I didn’t notice any difference or change. Had the same clothes, cars, movies, food, etc etc as the states
I remember when we were considered a third world country and it definitely felt like that way here in Nova Scotia Canada can't speak for any other province or territories.
Justin Trudeau's father was also Prime Minister...he served two terms as prime minister (1968-1979; 1980-1984). He led the Liberal Party in five general elections, winning four (1968, 1972, 1974 and 1980) and losing one (1979). As for Canada being a 3rd world cou try is nonsense. The 90's were not bad years. Food was cheap, rent was cheap... i was in my 20's in the 90's.
Many of us pool resources in order to sponsor refugees with other community members. Caanada's private refugee sponsorship should definitely be emulated.
I dont know when the video was made but Trudeau is by far not liked by the vast majority of Canadians. 82% of Canadians want a new prime minister. Election polling has the conservatives at a 96% chance of winning and a 90% chance of winning a majority. Even young liberals are looking to emigrate if they can. Trudeau has done big damage to our country to get feel good videos like this made about him
There was a period of extreme austerity in Canada once the government explained to the people that the interest on our debt was outpacing our GDP. Finance Minister Paul Martin instituted measures to bring the budget back into line with reality. His plan worked.
It's should be kept in mind that Trudeau had only been Prime Minister for 2 years when this video was released (2017). Obviously, a lot of things have changed, including the pandemic! While many may be dissatisfied with Trudeau, the possibility of Pierre Poilievre being the next prime minister sends shivers down the spines of those who are not from the country's west region, it seems. Lots of debate on that issue! 😂😂😂
@carolmurphy7572 We really like him in the west. The press and the media do a good job of turning him into a villain. I've been to one of his rallies. He's a pretty down to earth guy..
I’m in th west and I can’t stand PP. I shudder to think he would be PM. While I never voted for Trudeau either time, I’d rather go with the devil we know than head down the road of the US with PP. GAWD No
I think the anti-immigrant sentiment in the UK is because they may have a greater issue with illegal boarder crossing, and there just isn’t the same opportunity for jobs and growth as in there is in Canada…Canada is enormous with plenty of room and opportunity for development.
@ 9:37 On immigration. My great grandparents were immigrants to Canada, in the early 1900's. I'm a Canadian, but almost 4/5 of Canada is immigrants. I love the fact that you can see people from around the world, right here in my city. For the most part, we manage to get along. More importantly, we learn that we are all really the same. Different traditions, customs, etc., they add the spice. As people, we all want for the same things, really. Canada has a hard culture to define, because we try and really mix all of it together, for better or worse. From my perspective, we are still stronger together, as long as we listen and learn from each other. Hate and racism are taught, young kids know nothing about it. Might be important.
4/5 equates to 32,000,000 immigrants. According to the 2021 Census, the immigrant population was only 8,361,505 or 23% of Canada. By definition, an immigrant is someone who migrated from another country. So if someone is Canadian born they're not an immigrant.
The recession in the 80’s was rough. My patent almost lost their home and we were struggling to make ends meet but didn’t last that long and we were in an economic uplift.
The US is probably lower since Trump, but although not immune to bigotry, Canada is less tolerant to the religious/racial bigotry. The US has freedom of speech which allows people to be wrong factually or hateful, Canada has freedom of expression which allows different opinions but prohibits factually wrong or hateful talk. Everyone has an ancestry of being an immigrant, even 1st nations were immigrants , the problem is how they have been historically treated and what needs to be done to prevent that from happening in the future.
OMG...the comparison of Canada as a honorary member of the 3rd world in the 1990's is bizarre. Although I find calling Canada the best country in the world, fatuous, comparing Canada in the 1990's as 3rd world is equally silly. Canada has been a wealthy country for the entire time I have been on this earth and to equate our difficulties in the 1990's to the plight of countries in real poverty is, at best, offensive to those countries. As someone who remembers the 1990's in Canada, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that statement. If that statement was made by the New York Times, it must have been made by some crazy right winger with little respect for the left leaning Canadian government and even less respect for the truth. (Not unlike today's right wingers of our southern neighbours.)
My mother was from Wigan. (I can hear you laughing!) I visited my Grandmother in the early 1980s......she was telling all her friends that her Grandson from the colonies was coming for a visit. Backward? Only by 100 yrs. Then only got worse!
Canada went through a tough time because of the first Trudeau, this vid was done at beginning of the second one. Sure hope Ottawa has learned a valuable lesson. Time to change how voting works.
If the poll was held today , you would see that most of Canada wants Turdeau gone, FOREVER!! Not popular at all, especially internationally, and an utter embarrassment to Canadians. He hires people based on nationality and looks, as well as gender, over COMPETENCE. There are many people in his cabinet who are not competent, in some cases clueless.
Oh yeah, I actually had to leave Canada after graduating in 1990 to find a decent job as our economy went through a terrible recession with double digit unemployment from 91-94. The late 80's were actually fine - it was 1991 when things went south. Mortgage rates also peaked around 21%!! Yikes!! Just as that was receding Quebec came within a less than 1% margin of separating from Canada and our federal government basically went broke and had to drastically slash spending - which turned things around. The third world quip was always a huge exaggeration but there were grounds to be concerned and our dollar sunk to just over 60 US cents at one point. It was really in reference to the governments' massive deficit which has since been massively reduced on a deficit to total GDP ratio. In fact, with all of our resources, we SHOULD be the richest country in the world - but our government lacks vision. As for Trudeau, he was initially very popular but he is now very unpopular and if an election were held today, polls indicate a landslide majority win for the Conservatives.
Hugely massive over exaggeration about any economic issues in the 80’s & 90’s. Also, the Canadian public has nowhere near as much confidence in Trudeau as the presenter alludes to. Half the population believes he’s doing an ok job, while the other half believes at best he’s a photo-op Prime Minister. The presenter is smoking lots of wacky tobaccy. 😂
I am certain you are correct about Simon Whistler. LOL He all but admits it. However, this is an old video and he is going on statistics generated and researched with what is available online. Not so sure I agree about the 80s and 90s not being that bad. I remember all my tradesmen friends being out of work due to lack of new developments and the "gas shortage" which was more of a political ploy to raise gas prices if I recall correctly .
You guys aren't right, it's probably more like 55%. Trudeau really hasn't steered the country in a bad direction. You are just biased and probably live in Alberta. You need to be unbiased before you talk about shit. Not going to lie, I might vote Pierre, I am undecided. However, Trudeau has been good for years, and good for this nation.
As a young person during that time period it’s ridiculous to say that relatively speaking it was difficult or a third world country in the global context. There was a recession in the early 90s, and a national sales tax was introduced, followed by a downsizing of the federal government in 1995. There was pain associated with that, but also benefit as those two decisions, along with good economic times led to some very good times and a deficit free federal government. To say that overall, it was dark days is hyperbole.
Something that comes up in these type of videos that drives me crazy. You don't need a passport to be a citizen. You do need to be a citizen to get a passport. Some Canadians go their whole life without getting a passport.
The 1980s was a time of international recession economically. It was felt all over and some countries came through it better than others. The USA was in a recession almost depression, which President Obama was able to pull out of requiring his Govt. to bail out NY Banks and Traders. Canada does better dye to it's great amount of natural resources. Canadians value Conservation and cleaner aur/ water qualities. It reduced zoil production in Alberta's boom because it required better oil processing laws and procedures.
I was a young adult in 80’s I was always working never went more then a week without a job but when conservatives signed free trade Ontario lost a lot of manufacturing businesses to Mexico that was early 90’s to mid 90’s before others businesses stepped up
Not sure when this video was made? But just be aware that we are now dealing with a political situation where those on the other side are really putting pressure on for a change in government. I'm sure you're aware of how volitile the US political scene is right now? Well, that influences some political thinkers up this way as well. The opposition is really putting out some neegative vibes that if elected might just change some thinking in our great country. Justin has done very well during his tenure but unless there is a sudden shift in thinking , he might be on his last term. We'll see how it goes.
if just wanting to move to Canada just because, ain't easy .. highly skilled individuals wanted. future job prospects,The pathway is points-based, and you will be scored on your experience, qualifications, education, have settlement funds and skills. knowledge of language french or English preferred. slightly different for refuges escaping war torn/hardship in countries, proof of such ,, most need a Canadian person or group as a sponsor some *start up funds* would be provided as Financial support which would last up to one year after a refugee arrives in Canada, or possible 24 months which is based on circumstance. thats it
@@hollowhills100 Try again, if you call this good, ypu havent seen much of the world. This is a disgrace. Try using the health care system and then say that !
@user-fr4xt9pk6h agreed Healthcare is a in trouble... but I have had several surgeries that would have cost me 100's of thousands elsewhere. I have traveled to many countries. You can't say we have it that bad.... I do well financially but for people who do not amd wouldn't be able to afford health insurance....for example in the U..S I wouldn't be able to walk. Perhaps there are countries in Europe who have better health care.... but come on, we are not that bad off.
@@hollowhills100 We really do have it bad, I think paer of the problem is Canadians are extremely accustomed to living like this - Our federal government is disgraceful, I have a friend who has waited close to 3 years alreadt for knee surgery, it would have been done at the Mayo clinic within a couple weeks and if you have health insurance, the care in the US is substantially better. Canada is failing, if we open pur eyes we can all see it.
I don’t know where they got this third world country thing. I was in my 30’s in the mid 80’s & there definitely was a recession. I did lose the job I had, but I found another one quickly & a couple years later lost that one due to mismanagement. I was off work for about a year, but had employment insurance which was ok at the time. I then went back to school & found another job which then led to a better job, so if you went out & looked for a job, most of the time you found one😁 There are so many jobs available now that a lot of places are hurting because the young people now won’t just work anywhere, so that is ridiculous today.
Trudeau is hated by many people in Alberta because his green energy policy and environment protection committed is felt like a threat to the Albertan economy, although Alberta has received its share of financial assistance from Trudeau when oil prices were at record lows. Albertans are seen as the equivalent of American Texans. Antivaxxers, pandemic deniers. The Freedom convoy comes from there. They make other Canadians ashamed. Of course, not all Albertans are like that, but this minority is vocal and disturbing like the Proud Boys in the US but without guns.
I am all for immigration. Our country was built on the backs of immigrants. We have a housing crisis in Canada at the moment and the economy is not doing great so the feelings of Canadians regarding immigration is, if you can't house the people that are already here, and you can't make the lives of Canadians better, why are you bringing in immigrants. This is not my opinion but this sentiment is growing.
This video os out of date. Trudeau's popularity has waned since he was first elected. He lost his majority in the last election and now we have a minority governmen with Trudeau still being Prime Minister.
Why our immigration policy works so well is that we need people in Canada. We have lots of room in the more people we get the better it is we’re not in a position of over flooding ourselves with immigrants we only have 40 million people we need more people there might be a point in the future or we can’t do that anymore but at this point we’re trying to raise our population to 100 million people which will not be hard on our economy or on our space. We have lots of space. Britain, on the other hand is tiny probably got more people that can handle right now so immigrants are not needed. No wonder people feel squeezed.
An aggressive Canadian policy towards increased immigration is desperately needed to build a large enough workforce to support an aging population. More needs to be done, but in my opinion Canada is better off than most other countries in this regard.
3:29 why those dark years? Easy: conservative prime ministers in power. Started in 1984 with Brian Mulroney, a “progressive-conservative” (whatever that is..), followed by Kim Campbell, and ended in fall 1993, that’s when Jean Chrétien, a Liberal, was voted in. Look at the US, is here, and most probably many other developed nations, NOTHING good happens for us, the people, when conservatives are in power. It’s still of actuality right now here in Québec, where because of the boomers votes, we’re stuck for a second term with a cringy conservative government, that hands goodies to boomers and retired while families are going hungry and homeless. It always ends up in a shitshow after conservatives leadership. Liberals that get voted in following years of conservative destruction always end up having to pick us up from the ground, they spend over half their term fixing the mess they inherited, and allocate effort and resources to repair what was damaged, and redo what was attempted in a way better, more responsible and efficient version.
The UK are colonizers Canada was colonized. Part of being colonized is immigration massive successive waves of immigration. It does something to your cultural identity when you come to terms with that. Especially when you consider Canadians were already used to co existing culturally between the English French and indigenous communities.
The late 80's/early 90's were very good financially for my parents. (Oh yeah, I am Canadian . From just north of Toronto) And then from say 1985 forward were very good times. Much like the USA, but without Reagan politics that favors the rich, then Clinton that deregulated banking. It was, Canada who seemed to reap some benefits, from those choices, without having to live with them ourselves. We are the recipient of trickle down economic benefits 😮in particular, coupled with the new NAFTA free trade world, we know lived in. "Free trade prevents war".... True, and made us profit from American consumption and exceptionalism. Perhaps, just a bit, eh.
The honorary third world country comment came from one US source and the truth is the US comes closer to third world metrics than Canada. Don`t believe everything you read. Canada had some recessions in the 80`s and 90`s , just like the world did. Canada has hosted 3 Olympic games and 1 worlds fair in the last 50 years; not exactly a third world country, hey. The Trudeau hype has worn off somewhat, but he has remained as a good leader of our country.
is there really more problems now than the eighties or is it just because of social media now it come into our knowledge more and quicker than back then, i know as a young person i did not take time to read news papers or watch tv much but now every thing is sorta splashed more into my view. ??
@kennethlarocque2605 If you're talking about MAID, you are certainly wrong if you think you have to worry about it being used to euthanize someone if they go to hospital. That simply isn't true.
Majority of Canadian's didn't want Trudeau to win, especially the second time. Unfortunately...here we are with what turned out to be the biggest embarrassment in Canadian history.
Lol, since Trudeau won, obviously the majority of Canadians voted for him via their Liberal Members of Parliament. Canadians vote for their local Member of Parliament (MP), who represents one specific constituency in the House of Commons. The leader of the party most likely to hold the confidence of the House of Commons becomes the prime minister.
I’m NDP, and never voted for Trudeau, but even through all his gaffs I’d STILL rather have him than PP. GAWD a Conservative in power right now, that is all chummy with the USA Repubs is a scary thought. I like Canada the way it is, a Democratic country that honours ALL people and keeps crazy right wing thoughts out.
1980s had very high inflation. Interest rates went up to quell the inflation. Our first mortgage started at 13.5%. Fraser Institute is very right wing. Canada is a country of immigrants, other than Indigenous peoples. Many people don't like Trudeau, some of it because he is the son of Pierre Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada. Conspiracy theory people say that he is the son of Fidel Castro. The main opposition party is model itself after the Republicans and the MAGA currently in the United States. Trudeau supports Ukraine. The opposition doesn't. Canada has the third largest number of Ukraines after Ukraine and Russia.
I lived through 80 and 90's it was fine and yes im Canadian. As a Canadian with a huge country to manage we do pretty good. Minus the Prime minister right now, he sucks.
Unfortunately Canada is outpricing itself. There are many homeless. and many young working people who will never own their own home. The future in that sense looks grim...even in small cities and towns. We have a huge doctor shortage!! Our healthcare system....primarily our mental healthcare system is in deep trouble. Still we muster on and do our best to be polite, socially conscious, and generally happy. We know what we have here. There are some of us that wish to act American in the social aspects but hopefully they will come to their Canadian senses. Best wishes to you. Enjoy your videos.
Nothing has changed Mert. We have our problems and there are some doors that should have remained closed but were opened (mainly due to US influence). We will be ok.
Sadly I am hearing "more" anti immigrant talk in recent years. My attitude is and hopefully will always be that good people are always welcome, so while I support a "level" of screening people, I'm more of a give everyone a chance type of person. Also... unless you are 100% indigenous for everyone in your family tree for the last 500+ years... you are an immigrant. If you are completely indigenous... I hope you don't mind me being here too. My ancestors may have been a problem but I try to respect everyone. When was the video made? They started with Canada turning 150... and I think Trudeau's ratings have dropped too. Don't get me wrong he isn't awful especially compared to some countries leaders, but he has made... mistakes. And currently leads a minority government.
yeah i agree Trudue was nice for a bit but then his policies showed there effect i agree with most of the video but he has spent to much on the woke movement and outside problems that the average Canadian born person is in a much worse state. edit even by 2017 the time this video was released most Canadians where tired of his bull
Simon is smart and reliable. He needs to get off the coke. Also...I get pissed at one way communication. What will you do about that Mert? There are people like me that know the dangers of (anti) social media and just do not do that. Also moi. 30 year IT self-employed. You have my email....
This is a bit dated. While Canada gets a lot right, we also get things wrong. I’d say we’re in the top ten, but the top? I’m not so sure. Canadian here, but there are countries I admire more. I’m looking at you Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland. I was a civil servant during the early ‘90s when there were significant government cutbacks…though I kept my job. Real estate prices in the capital tanked at that time. The honorary member of the third world trope was hyperbole. Trudeau’s polling numbers are presently in the tank.
Have you lived in any of those countries you so admire because that is the real metric. I'm definitely not naive enough to believe that we are the best (or most admired) country in the world because all of these opinion videos are subjective, however, I'm not at all sure if those other countries are better or more worthy of your admiration. If you objectively scratch below the surface you could probably find many reasons why other countries don't measure up!
Norwegian here, and thank you! I think my country got a lot of things right. It’s not perfect, but our problems are often small compared to other nations, I think. I would not live anywhere else. Maybe, except from Canada 🇨🇦 😊
Maybe disastrous to big business and those who lost millions during that time. Like some of the other comments, I was a young adult during that time. Interest rates were high but that did not impact rents and there were place available. Food and gas was reasonable. Jobs were available. If Fraser Institute publication is framing the commentary the you are getting a wealth-forward slant, definitely from a right wing perspective not regular citizens living their lives.
Things are much worse now than during the "crisis" you talk about. Unless Mommy and Daddy come with substantial help, young people have zero chance of buying a home.
I don't think so... People who dislike him seem to think he's a goddamn war criminal or something, but he still enjoys a lot of support. It's just that the left is fractured and the right isn't.
And replace him with what other idiot? Definitely not a Conservative because look what they are doing in the Provinces they run especially Smith from Alberta! She's the flip flop queen
Oh you should be so proud to live in this disgraceful country, keep the rose colored glasses on. Canada has failed every one of us.
I was born in the early 70s and I certainly wouldn't say Canada was 3rd world in the 80's and 90's. Of course there were problems, but there always are.
I lived through those times, and I don't know what that guy is talking about!
It was NOT a third world country, I don’t know what that man in the video was talking about.
Yup, I was too busy earning money 💰.
I was teen back then, I don't remember having a rough time. We never lacked anything essential. Weird to hear otherwise.

the 90's were awesome. the 80's were tougher imo.
We definitely have our problems. The thing is, the only way to fix problems is to face them. We are doing that. We can not hide from our past, nor hide the bad things about our present.

Or ''something'' of the sort.
The US and North America in general were all in a bit of a free fall economically in late 80s early 90s. The third world remarks were more af a threat from Wall Street to get our financial act together. Canada did this and in any event was never branded a third world country per say. We made it through with flying colours.
We weren’t even CLOSE to being a 3rd world country! That’s complete and utter NONSENSE!
The comments about the 80s and 90s took me by surprise, and I’m a Canadian in my 60s. It’s always been an awesome country and a first rate place to live.
Canada has NEVER been a first rate place to live, I think perhaps you have been living with the rose colored glasses on.

And look where THAT brought us!!!!!!
I think we had 16% interest rates in 79, so that was a thing. Still we had a decent lifestyle.
Yes, they escalated to 18%; I bought a house in 78, and the interest rates were killing us. We had to work 3 jobs to just get by.
Ouch, thanks for the input/ @@MsLinda165

I can’t stand the thought of JT losing to PP - makes me want to throw up! My beautiful Country!
Thank you! I absolutely agree!

Can't wait to watch it happen.
JT is trashing our economy, he has more then doubled the cost of housing, food and transportation. He needs to go before Canada is bankrupt! As of now your great great grand kids will be paying off the debt he has added to the deficits.
This video is a bit old. I bet there will be lots of people in the comments whining about Trudeau...
I thought the vid was speaking about an alternate Canada - that was not reality
Yep 80s were my favourite decade. Born in 65, so Gen X.
Better clothes and food, 100% for sure. Better movies and cars? No difference.
I remember when we were considered a third world country and it definitely felt like that way here in Nova Scotia Canada can't speak for any other province or territories.
The huge mantion you asked for is the Canada's parliament at Ottawa, Canada's capital
Jobs searching sucked though.
Many of us pool resources in order to sponsor refugees with other community members. Caanada's private refugee sponsorship should definitely be emulated.
Just saw this statistic today. Child poverty UK, 29%,, USA, 16%, Canada, 7.2%. What’s with that?
Countries use wildly different metrics for measuring poverty so that should be taken with a grain or two of salt.
An updated, more recent video must be watched. And the 3rd world country reference to the 80-90’s is bizarre.
Why is he so popular in the east? As someone from the West, I don't understand. His policies hurt us in the west the most.
@@stevemacgregor4387 I don't think it's necessarily that he's so popular in the east. I think that it's because Poilievre is just so UNpopular!
@carolmurphy7572 We really like him in the west. The press and the media do a good job of turning him into a villain. I've been to one of his rallies. He's a pretty down to earth guy..

I think the anti-immigrant sentiment in the UK is because they may have a greater issue with illegal boarder crossing, and there just isn’t the same opportunity for jobs and growth as in there is in Canada…Canada is enormous with plenty of room and opportunity for development.
Do you understand what is happening along Roxham Road, the border between Quebec and NY State!? Illegals... pouring in by the hour. Nobody stops them.
You couldn't be more wrong and that is as far as we will go.
I'm sure you have all the answers, but this was 2 weeks ago, so whatever.

Trudeau is despised in Canada.
You really do learn something new everyday I had no clue, Canada was the most admired country on earth! 🤔
Ummmm. There is a LOT of misinformation in this video.
This video is a few years old so yes some of the info as changed.
Timely lol. The minister just announced today that they will be severely cutting back on visas. (Housing)
So, child poverty today is UK 29%, USA, 16%, Canada 7.2%. Yea, 7.2% is bad, but UK, 29% !!!.
I knew someone would spout the Trudeau rhetoric. So stop whining and vote him out next election.
Hay Yes We give,Canadian Taxes We give da most”A”!
I live through those years: the country has high inflation, high mortgage rates, there was stagflation!
Actually 80% would like to see him gone.
Wherever you got that number, you got a wrong number.@@alanj9978

You guys aren't right, it's probably more like 55%. Trudeau really hasn't steered the country in a bad direction. You are just biased and probably live in Alberta. You need to be unbiased before you talk about shit. Not going to lie, I might vote Pierre, I am undecided. However, Trudeau has been good for years, and good for this nation.
I'm 70 now and have never been middle v
class, that would involve being rich.
So who was the pm in the late 80's and 90's?
We'll see how it goes.
if just wanting to move to Canada just because, ain't easy .. highly skilled individuals wanted. future job prospects,The pathway is points-based, and you will be scored on your experience, qualifications, education, have settlement funds and skills. knowledge of language french or English preferred. slightly different for refuges escaping war torn/hardship in countries, proof of such ,, most need a Canadian person or group as a sponsor some *start up funds* would be provided as Financial support which would last up to one year after a refugee arrives in Canada, or possible 24 months which is based on circumstance. thats it

The times they are a-changin'. Trudeau is now about as popular as a skunk at a garden party.
This aged liked milk.
I don't see much difference in our lives from then to now, definitely no way didcI see us as 3rd world!
The 80s and 90s were peetty good i dont know what this bald guy in the glasses is talking about.
The free trade act and NAFTA hit us hard back then
The honorary third world country comment came from one US source and the truth is the US comes closer to third world metrics than Canada.
Conservative PM Brian Mulroney. 84 to 93... No coincidence
There's more problems now than there was in the 80's and 90's.

Bit much to say that, no? Think you're stating views from your own political perspective ...

Trudeau was young, he was a teacher so he didn’t have the typical profile.
He IS THE WORST PRIME MINISTER THAT CANADA HAS EVER HAD AND WE CAN HARDLY WAIT UNTIL HE IS VOTED OUT.
