It is a chicken and egg thing. If the US pulls out all its military bases all over the world, most countries will reduce their military budget. China is increasing its military budget because the US is parking its war ships at China's door step, and setting up military bases in Japan, South Korea and the Philippines. Similarly, the main reason for North Korea continuously showing their might, is because of the US interference in the Korean peninsula. The Chinese believes that, in order to be a good leader, you make friends, not provoke. This is in its culture and its thinking.
If only the western powers understand China and stand down, then we will have world peace.

    1. Since when did China oppose the universal declaration of human rights ? Professor better back it up.
    2. The current power transition is not an international concern but only a US concern. When China overtook several developed economies including Western ones, the US kept quiet. It's only when China is about to overtake them then we see all the tariffs today.
    3. The mentioned power transitions that led to war are European cases and it's not accurate to say the same will happen for China.
    4. Instead of saying China is a satisfied status quo state, the correct answer should be that the US is a dissatisfied dominant state. When China overtook Japan and other European economies, they did not respond with tariffs.

Worse, in 1950-1953 US attacked North Korea, bombed Chinese border towns and killed quite a numbers of Chinese farmers.
Chairman Mao said China had had to send volunteer army to help N Korea to help herself as China had had been attacked, invaded and partially colonised by Western imperialists in 1840 1860 1900 1931-1945.

Just confused thinking arising from an almost complete ignorance of what China is.
This is the key problem with Australian academics including Hugh White; not admitting they do not understand China enough for them to make any accurate prognostications.
Even as they speak the speed of developments in China is such that the knowledge of these academics would be outdated by the weekend.
Just a week ago, the history of power balance was disrupted and changed when a little known Chinese AI company came out and present a system equivalent to OpenAI created for 5.6 million dollars against the 5 billions spent by OpenAI.
The implications of this would be beyond western academics blinded by hubris and ignorance but continues to claim superior analytic capabilities.
Soon in reality, the yellow peril would exist under their beds but they merrily sleep on with their delusions of superiority.
As the great Lee Kuan Yew once said of the west; you can change the rules of the game you invented when you lose but others are not playing it anymore and doing something better.

The question remains, when ww3 breaks out, how will china feed its population?
China continued to be the world’s largest food importing country in 2023, with total food imports valued at $140 billion.

Economy is collapsing. Evergrande has gone to zero. 10m construction workers have lost their jobs. Home prices have dropped 70%. Shops are closing up, commercial rents have collapsed too. Two million restaurants closed in 2024 after 1.5m closed in 2023 . Youth unemployment is 27%. Middle age unemployment is pushing 50%. Jobs are evaporating, housing debt is crushing and birth rate has collapsed. Local govt has no money to pay workers. Public debt is 130 trillion. Chinese 30 year bonds yield now lower than Japan. 2000 hospitals closed since covid, 500 in 2024. 600m earns 1000 yuan or less. The govt hospitals has no money to buy imported medicine, replaced with generic low quality locally made products, patients welfare is not a concern.
