This does happen a lot in Re Zero, where we don’t get a full explanation or backstory for characters. But we don’t really need them, all thats important is that Roswaal is forcing a choice onto Subaru for his own selfish goals. We don’t need to fully understand Roswaal to understand why this is bad, or why it destroys Subarus self autonomy. Its almost like when your parents make a decision for you and force to do it for your own good. We don’t always know why they do that for us, and when youre older, you start realizing why your parents did what they did. Whether it was good or bad. The characters are constantly being pulled back and forth by a fate that they can’t really understand. Even now, Emilia doesn’t know why she was the key. But that was part of what ruined her life, she doesn’t need to understand it, only overcome it. Thats why I am okay with being left in the dark a lot, I am caught up on the novel, and I still dont fully understand Roswaal. But I genuinely think rhat confusion is part of the story, we understand almost as much as our characters do. Which allows us as the audience, to be just as confused and hopeless as the characters get at times. Re Zero is a slow burn type of series, we get information about the world very slowly. Despite how frustrating it may seem, its been fun being fed information slowly and working on theories in my own head and with friends and fans.

Subaru calls her “That’s the woman in the coffin, right?” 2x25 And Emilia Questions if it’s Echidna in 2x23 So basically Subaru and Emilia’s Echidna: Young Echidna Roswaal Betty Ryuzu’s Echidna: Older Echidna
@@farohreacts I have my own theory but it’s a spoiler so i won’t say but from what we’ve seen up to this point is that Echidna only hates Satella and Emilia. So it probably has something to do with whatever caused there to be 2 identical people
@@farohreacts I think it is because the Dream Echidna is in love with Subaru, and because Subaru chooses Emilia over the Dream Echidna. I think it also irritates the Dream Echidna that Subaru would choose someone less intelligent than her. That's why the Dream Echidna repeatedly insults Emilia's intelligence.
You can think of Od or Odo as pretty much your lifeforce or your soul. Thats the easiest way to remember it. It is also what stores the mana inside of your body so the bigger your Od the more mana capacity you have So far about roswaals goal... We know that he really likes Echidna and in season 1 he said that his goal is to kill the dragon (for whatever reason) so he wants to push subaru to only support emilia and use his RbD to cheat so she wins the selection so roswaal can get near the dragon (remember that the royal family is supposed to have a pact with the dragon) why he wants to kill the dragon and what that would achieve we dont know yet. But these are the pieces we have so far :P also you are not supposed to get the whole thing ^^ Whats important is to keep these details in mind that you find interesting/suspicious and try to piece them together as you go You are doing more than fine compared to a lot of other people i have seen. Nagatsuki-sensei's livetweets/trivia for this episode. Nagatsuki Tappei (Author of Re:Zero) likes to tweet as the episode airs. They usually include trivia and facts around that episode. Rough translation: Yes, it's time for this week's Re: Zero! Last time, Emilia's past was made clear, and this week will shine light on the past from a different direction! Behold! Right from the start is depicting the past of the first Roswaal, and this is content from the store-exclusive novels. It's also a scene that the author likes, so we worked to have it put into the anime. At this point in time, people who could use magic mostly didn't exist, and neither his family nor anyone else understood the Roswaal's pain as he was unable to release mana. It's like what Puck was suffering with in Memory Snow, and Roswaal was saved on the verge of death by the "Witch" Echidna. From that point on, he became her disciple, yes. Only those who are close to her call Beatrice Betty. Beatrice had disliked Roswaal, but Roswaal was enjoying that, so Beatrice gave up on it and let him call her that. For all that she said "Say it", Beatrice gets upset if it's said. Although what Roswaal said was teasing, it was also his true feelings. The refined prank that Beatrice played on Ryuzu is put together the same way as the looping hallway prank she played on Subaru in season one, you see. Even after 400 years have passed, the things she does haven't changed. They're good friends aren't they, the "Sanctuary" trio. If only these peaceful times could have lasted forever... With the approach of a suspicious silhouette, the atmosphere changes. Long afterwards, "Sanctuary" is said to be a place where those of mixed blood are gathered, but the actual goal was different. Of course, even though the truth was something else, it doesn't mean that everyone's lives here were a lie. The first Roswaal was a genius as well, and at this point in time he was able to use the six magic types at a fairly high level, and is one of the leading magic users in the world. Pandora, who appeared last time, had a soft white special effect too, and the man making his appearance this time has a special effect close to that on him, doesn't he. Beings with a witch factor inside them were called "Witches", and are called archbishops in current times, but one in the same position in this time period is called "Devil". Of course, there are no confirmed devils other than this Hector of "Melancholy". They're about that rare. Furthermore, I think there may be people thinking "He~y, I've heard the way Hector speaks before.". It was love that passed down Fortuna's "re~ally" and way of speaking to Emilia; strong feelings can cause that sort of thing, right? Ryuzu was necessary to activate the barrier for "Sanctuary", but Beatrice hadn't been told the details. Well then, Echidna tried to avoid having her at this farewell scene, but it was Roswaal that advised her "Then she'll despise us.". Beatrice doesn't directly know the threat the enemy poses, but it's a sort of childlike, idealistic and optimistic belief. I think you probably understand, but Hector is in the top strength class in the story, after all. I think you can tell if you look at her ears, but Ryuzu Meyer is a 'half-elf'. In this time period, it's not like it's only half-elves that stand out and are disliked, but in any age of the world, those with mixed blood are hated for that alone, so until she came to "Sanctuary", she had it fairly rough, too. The past is brought to light, and still nothing about Roswaal changes despite it. Being Roswaal is being unchanging. Roswaal has already taken in the past. Hence, even if he did enter the tomb, he couldn't take the trials. For Roswaal, who knows Ryuzu Meyer, saying "Being wounded and despised: that is the fate of a half-elf." is something he'll later want to die about having said. Roswaal thinks that he wishes for nothing but Echidna, who saved him 400 years ago, and his way of life cuts off and discards everything else. It's a fact that he once loved and was kind to Beatrice, and Ram and Rem are important to him. But, compared to what's most important to him, they're not even placed on the scale; it's that kind of story. That's a really great ending...... That was a really great ending...... Thank you very much. This ends our trip through the past for now, and we return to the fight to do something about the present and future. Well then, see you, and please join us again next week! bonus retweet from Mayu Maejima: Episode 45. "Changing without changing" is a good phrase. But you can really sympathize with what Roswaal is saying. I feel like I'm the type of person who lives in the past, so this was an episode where I felt like I could strongly agree with what both Subaru and Roswaal were saying. The OP didn't play.
