    I have restored many pieces of furniture and never used this stuff. I normally clean with soap allow to dry. Then 00/01 steel wool and little bit of thinners/ turps, this creates a smoother surface. again with 000 steel wool with a bit thinners/turps until you have a very smooth surface. Then use wax or oil , teak,linseed,orange,lemon.then with a soft linnet free cloth begin to polish in the figure 8 until you have the required finish. A bit work, but the result is worth it. Regarding this video, for a quickie it is okay.

      I use this technique on old furniture and I prefer the linseed oil. Works everytime, if it's not to bad of shape after soap & water and elbow grease, then 000 steel wool, wipe down with turpentine, let dry then linseed oil, usually at least 2 coats. But to save time I use a variable speed random orbital sander turned all the way down (slow) with a pad and lint free cloth bonnet. You would even be amazed at the results that can be achieved with a clean and linseed oil rubbed into the grain.

    It's work for us in our restaurant. We had a huge amount of Mahogany paneling on the walls that was over 100 years old. It cleaned it fine. Obviously it depends on what you're trying to clean. There is a difference between cleanup & restoration. So take it easy on the guy.

    Thanks for the video!! I was raised using Old English. My Mom should've done commercials for it. I just recently (I was in a pinch) started using a vinegar/olive oil combo. It works fantastic and it's cheap!! Not that O.E. is pricey but, there's a better chance that I have vinegar and olive oil in my cabinet. And, it's also great on salad!! lol Keep up the good work DIYW !

    Yes, I have used the Murphys oil soap to clean the furniture well. You may need to clean it a few times with that first to make sure you get all the filth off.
    Then use the Old English and it should shine again nicely. You will also probably need a couple coats of this over a few days time period to get the furniture shining again.
    I have restored/cleaned a lot of antiques. I had my own shop until the hurricane took it all away.

    The video makes it really simple for an average home-owner by giving easy-to-follow tips on restoring wooden furniture. Experts often advise that timber is the most preferred wood for crafting wooden furniture. Why? Because it's sturdy and long-lasting and eliminates the need for excessive care.

    I always look for ideas on how to do stuff
    I recently picked up an old Art Deco dresser in pretty bad shape. The first thing I did was wipe it down with Murphy's Oil Soap and a rag to get the heavy stuff off and then I wet sanded very lightly with #400 wet/dry sandpaper with Murphy's Oil Soap. I'll let it dry and then apply some of the Old English oil to finish it off. There are also some spots that need patch veneer replacement but I'll work on hat another time.

  • @jimperphonic
    @jimperphonic 11 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thanks for the video man. There's nothing wrong with using wood oil on old, dried out, solid wood furniture. I'm sure there are your wood working snobs out there that must do it some sort of precise way, but that's not what your video is offering here. It's Fast and Simple. Obviously, you have an old solid wood dartboard and the technique you are using is just fine for that. I knew reading comprehension in the United States has declined for many years now, but video watching? That's a new one.

  • @debbinz5108

    If you'd start with a good wipe down using TSP you would be amazed at the grime that comes off. Then use the Old English. I clean rentals and TSP is my main cleaner. Kitchen cupboards with grooves....I use a tooth brush and dental pick and it peels hunks of grease and crud from grooves. Those nasty dark finger smudges around the handles come off using this solution. I've tried many different cleaners and TSP is the best. Go over with Liquid Gold or Old English.

    • @debbinz5108
      @debbinz5108 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @bina nocht TSP comes in liquid and granular. I only use the dry & mix with water, I can control the concentration that way. I typically use more than less.

    Well, the dart board is antique and I have also cleaned up a lot of other old, filthy furniture with this. Did not know about the veneer, thank you for the warning. Good to know.
    I do often use Murphys oil soap to clean really dirty stuff.
    Happy I did not go too crazy on my antique Singer sewing machine yet. I was thinking of some sort of wax for it.
    Again, with normal wood, I have had excellent results for many years on old furniture and other items. Solid wood though.

    Beautiful.
    I know nothing about antiques. I heard that collectors don't want anything done to the piece, you lose value. What you did made that piece look 100% better. Please tell me the info I read was not true. I just bought an antique dresser and it needs help. Thank you

    Old English is just a temporary fix...will just dry up again...I would get rid of the scratches & dents first also...then use a permanent finish

      +53mandevilla Try what I use. I love the stuff enough to write about it. Its called a Finish Rejuvenator because it goes into the varnish or whatever is dried out on the wood and brings out the original color and shine. It was invented for antiques over 30 years ago but Its great for even a wood floor. check out their website.www.thevictorianhouseproducts.com

    I started to give this a "thumbs down", glad I continued watching. The second coat seems to have really cleaned the wood nicely. It is nice to see the character of the wood instead of sanding and "restoring" something with such a nice look.
    I will try "old english" currently trying Murphys but not really thrilled, it does clean well and removed stains/old paint though.
    thanks for the video.

    You can easily transform a piece of furniture cheaply by stripping off the old paint and refinishing the wood as to its original state.

    can you use just about any oil for cleaning?

    • @TheDoItYourselfWorld
      @TheDoItYourselfWorld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, some oils get sticky and dry out with time, leaving a filthy residue which collects dust. This stuff has cleansers in it as well as conditioners for the wood.

    unless you have a love for greasy furniture don't use oil on it. if you use oil on a veneer you will end up with warped veneer.

    You seem to have this great deal of knowledge on the subject, yet I've read nothing but complaints, demands and quips. Instead of just carrying on and on, why don't you share this knowledge of yours with all of us? Enlighten us on the proper way to restore our antique furniture so that we all can move along from your Bedrock shenanigans.

    lovely oily finish. That will never be properly finished again, once the wood grain has soaked up that oil..
    Abit of advice from a pro, never use oil and never use paper towels.

    • @ultimaetsolder
      @ultimaetsolder 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jamie Farnsworth no. You just wipe old English on it with a paper towel. More lint the better. Just apply directly over the dirt, grime, and moisture.

    I think I would get along just fine in your neighborhood. I lived in Cypress Hills and Jamaica, Queens, NY. Being the only white boy around, the cops harassed me all the time, thinking I was doing something wrong. The bloods left me pretty much alone although they followed me home every night.
    In Germany I had to fight off gangs of Turks all the time. They hate the US soldiers.
    Come to my neighborhood (wilderness mountains) and see who would be scared.

    There is still some of the old finish or varnish on that piece. That is where the oil didn't soak in right away. Maybe it's just me, but I'd think about removing that to make the finish even.
