I never was really into history. I always loved global history. When I went to college I took a history class and it didn't focus on wars or anything like that. It mostly focused on ancient civilizations, tribes and African American slavery. My professor had printed articles about how enslaved people lived and she showed the class how money looked back in the day . From that day forward I was hooked on finding out more about what the enslaved people endured, what they ate , how many were murdered. I feel like an investigator trying to put the pieces together. I do think about majoring in history but I am uncertain of what jobs I would be able to get. I can’t speak for other countries, but I think many videos may have other career options because actual jobs as a historian are scarce. I also ended up getting a masters in Defense and Strategic Studies and a grad certificate in Nuclear Weapons Effects, Policy, and Proliferation. Since you are asking for video requests: I vaguely remember you speaking a bit about Old French in one of your recent videos. I am not sure if you formally learnt it or just read some medieval French texts... in any case, I would be interested in anything you could add to this topic, in whatever shape or form it might be. I am studying Japanese and French and although I am interested in the older Sprachzustände (is there an English word for it? I can only think of something like "older forms" but it doesn't sound as good as the German word... sorry native English speakers :p) of both of these, my university does not really offer a proper Old French course. Therefore I will be trying to study it a bit on my own after the semester. I would enjoy anyone who has experience learning "old" languages to tell me about the process (and what texts you read etc.)
I always dreamed of getting a PHD in History and become a teacher at an University.People can say what they want about teaching as a job, sure it might not be the best job out there, but its something I really want to do.
@3:33 What's interesting about 司馬遷 SīmǎQián is that, aside from the initial forays of his father, he pretty much penned most of the 526500 words of our first official History book. That surpasses even Cassius Dio Cocceianus's 399409-word _Historiae Romanae!_ You can tell we Chinese are obsessed with writing given that our 二十四史 Èrshísìshǐ is ~2× Epic οf King Gesar, ~22× Mahābhārata, ~50× Rοmance οf Three Kingdοms (❤️), ~64× Vulgate, ~88× Rāmāyaṇa, ~119× Šhāhnāme, ~290× New Testament, ~300× Ṛigveda, ~357× Iliád, ~458× Odyssey, ~500× Tοrah, ~516× Qurʼān, ~1430× Nibelungenlied, &c.
What a lovely video, as always! I studied history in school with the original goal of becoming a high school history teacher. I changed my mind when I realized I would rather teach children than teens, but by that point I had almost finished my history degree. So that's what I did. I have a degree in history and a master's in elementary education (which I only use currently as a stay-at-home mom). I'm so excited for your history videos. I feel like I haven't spent a lot of time with the subject since I graduated, and I really do love it.
Thank you! I have been thinking of becoming a historian for several years, and was starting to wonder what the heck it even entails, what money it'll make and such. I am now 20, and am about to start studying, and was unsure exactly what I should study and such to become a historian. Also been thinking of following linguistics or archaeology as well.
I was thinking about big buildings today actually because I passed a rune stone and was like smh @ vikings for not building houses that remained haha, but yeah it's super interesting to think about how much value we put in buildings, no matter what was required for them to be built.
Who was the first person to wonder whether you can make a living being a historian? Who was the first person actually making a living of being a historian?
Very interesting video. You do an amazing job at making the audience WANT to listen to what you have to say, and you made yourself very clear. Wonderful job.
I'm studying a Bachelor of Arts in History and Law, in South Africa (at the University of Cape Town). I loved this video! We learn a bit about the history of the Roman Empire, because the South African legal system is pluralistic, and is based on Roman-Dutch law, English Common law, and African Customary Law.
I agree we are here now because of our ancestors and to learn of them is learning about ourselves, after thousands of years we still continue to make the biggest mess of things. Such as discrimination of any kind, how have we not learned from the past? I do believe genes are passed down even from 1600’s in my family on both sides we have been around each other for centuries.

Im just about to go into college and i wont lie this has been on my mind a lot recently. Originally i wanted to become a history teacher so, i don’t know secondary school/college that sorta thing however you are supposed to know and teach a broader area of history some areas of which i am not particularly interested in. This is when i started to look into being an actual historian, i think my “area” of expertise is Anglo-Saxons/Norman England and the Middle Ages. Not only would this be better for me since i would want to put more effort into researching what i enjoy but also it means i don’t have to teach kids a subject i hardly know. Anyways you really have peaked my interest at least i have a few more years to ponder on it.
Hi, Ophelia! Thanks for your wonderful work! Can you recommend some general resources, especially books, about medieval history for non-historians? I admired Jacque le Goff`s and Umberto Ecco`s articles and books about the Middle ages but I don`t know where to continue with learning about this period.
@Ophelia Vert Great video! You know in our heavily commercialized and modern world we have forgotten that while you can make money off of virtually everything: *Only commerce has money and profit as the end goal.* *Non commercial activities such as history does not have money as its end goal.* The end goal of history is to learn. And the end goal of learning is to acquire wisdom. What then does Wisdom teach us with Her doctrines? That we should hold to the good and abstain from evil. And what is the fruit of Wisdom? That we possess a clear conscience that we have not dealt evil and unjustly with others, having walked the Way of Truth.
I am a continuous reader I am 41 years old now I am 42 in the 5th jun and I started being an avid reader again after being in a huge reading slump I started being an avid reader since 2020 due to covid, I have been interested in arts etc all through my life and I never took to the history subject when I was in hightschool, now since I read Kate moss crying city, and the burning chambers I have taken to historical fiction and the History subject, why one book can change one view on how you see the subject, now I am into reading history and historical fiction, all my year I liked to learn how people live or lived and how they thought, I guess I was always like an anthologist, and I was always fascinated by ancient Egypt, and collecting things, I guess I was always a bit like an archaeologist in a way so now I am interested in the subject History, I wish I did when I was younger I would not have been kicked out of History class for sleeping behind me books during my assignment.
@@OpheliaVert basically anything! 😂 I love history so anything about any era I’m all for! I would love to hear you talk about Latin and history together, I’m a classics student at uni and learning Latin alongside it so that would be cool!
Nice work I appreciate your effort to get some of history items to youtube thanks alot I'm seeing forward if you can make a video about research in history.
This might not be so relevant for Ophelia's audience, but I'll throw it out there anyhow. Having spent way too much of my youth at a university, I have found that far too many students (in my experience, at least) were not only woefully unprepared but were also woefully uninformed as to what an academic career would entail. For that matter, most of them had no idea what education really is. (And I include myself in everything I've said so far.) To exacerbate the problem, the undergraduate course work did nothing to remedy this situation. Then people get into grad school and find all kinds of things being thrown at them that they never suspected and that they can't handle.
Big Scary Steve I agree, this is definitely a problem. This is partly why it took me a long time before saying I wanted to go into academia, because I felt so aware that my undergrad degree didn’t prepare me for what that entailed. I chose my Master’s degree based on one that was focused on getting you a career in history, with a big emphasis on internships and jobs within the course requirements so I could actually get a feel for what it meant. So yes! I absolutely agree. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Big Scary Steve sorry! I didn’t specify: it’s the Dutch equIvalent of an MPhil, a two year Master’s focused on research. It stands for Research Master’s
As for being a historian, I don't think one gets a very good idea of what that is from being a student in a history class. In a history class, one simply memorizes one damned thing after another. Being a researcher and scholar is quite different, and I for one certainly didn't apprehend that even when I was required to write research papers in history classes. I''m still not terribly clear on how a historian goes about finding out about history. All I can imagine is reading a lot and then trying to come to conclusions by balancing the differences between the sources one has read. Of course, there is also the interpretation of what one has read, but that seems a bit more akin to philosophy to me rather than simply trying to establish the facts of what happened.
Wait, wait, wait. Do people not consider archeologists historians!? I'm not really in history, as I think you know, I'm just casually interested. But like... WHY!? Is there something I don't understand about what archeologists do? I'm so confused.
Dakota Abroad - Language, Culture, Veganism, Games well I meant it a bit lightheartedly but there’s a different way of approaching analysis and evidence in archaeology and I think that’s the thing. The archaeologist I’ve been working with said that he thinks sometimes archaeologists work too broadly and historians work too narrowly (regarding ancient/medieval study)
@@OpheliaVert When I behold archaeological sites or read ancient inscriptions, I _thirst_ for the chance to spectate and live it firsthand as a nonintervening ghost. To see it from different perspectives and feelings. The moment you uploaded this very video, you were partaking of history in the making. This video could be randomly found a millennium from now and noone would fathom (or even speak the same dialect of English possibly!) what you felt when you were making it, editing it, uploading it - not even future you might remember it so vividly (just like past you who planned it from past going forward didn't have the project completely worked out - it was a vague plan or intention waiting to gestate). No one else could have done that but Ophelia Vert. This very comment thread is History in the making. If it holds true for us at Present, surely we can justly extend the reasoning to the indefinite Past and Future, no?
I really enjoy history and want to do it as a career but I couldn’t even get on a levels as my English was too bad and I just feel like I’m not gonna get there
Hi, thank you for the video. It was very helpful, even for someone already taking graduate classes and trying to narrow their focus. Do you know if there is a rough ratio of teaching to researching programs? I'm more interested in the latter and I'm wondering what my options will be. Thank you!
What progress has been made to reduce the blantantly classcist lack of historical preservation of the everyday person? Even when mass-literacy was a thing in the early 20th century, academia refused to preserve their works, and they were likely held in local libraries, if not community libraries seperate from the government. Obviously, the internet archive project has made it impossible for academia to ignore the common person.

hi queen im 16 and im searching for a type of history career bc thats what i love and this video really inspired me more to pursue that. so then i went on your page looking for more videos, and saw u have not posted anything in 3 years and only have 2 vids.... please come back and make more videos bc you are now my new inspiration. .love you already.
A PhD is also a researcher.
Herodotus was the first Historian for europeans, not for the World.
For the west.

Guys, just do what you love, the rewards will come and do not rely on expectations as you can not control them
@3:33 What's interesting about 司馬遷 SīmǎQián is that, aside from the initial forays of his father, he pretty much penned most of the 526500 words of our first official History book.
That surpasses even Cassius Dio Cocceianus's 399409-word _Historiae Romanae!_
You can tell we Chinese are obsessed with writing given that our 二十四史 Èrshísìshǐ is ~2× Epic οf King Gesar, ~22× Mahābhārata, ~50× Rοmance οf Three Kingdοms (❤️), ~64× Vulgate, ~88× Rāmāyaṇa, ~119× Šhāhnāme, ~290× New Testament, ~300× Ṛigveda, ~357× Iliád, ~458× Odyssey, ~500× Tοrah, ~516× Qurʼān, ~1430× Nibelungenlied, &c.
Came to your channel because your comment on my The Dig review! Thanks for showing support! I subbed!
Lingue Nuvolose I think about this way too often
Who was the first person to wonder whether you can make a living being a historian? Who was the first person actually making a living of being a historian?
Bob Witlox brilliant question! I’ll look into this and get back to you
Well, Herodotus is the father of history but I'm not sure about who first made money from being a historian
Very interesting video. You do an amazing job at making the audience WANT to listen to what you have to say, and you made yourself very clear. Wonderful job.
That’s really kind! Thank you!
Entertaining and really interesting.
mags orson love you Mam
I used to love to become Historian..but now i change that and becoming IR student (International Relations)and always rely on past history.Like medieval, the cold war,the great depression, ongoing war against Terror,And the future..i think both subject are reliable IR dan History won't be seperated.Thank for an amazing video!🤩🇮🇩

Fabulous video!
Love this video, Ophelia! Also the editing at the start 🤌🤌
Angelic Erin ahhh thank you so much Erin!
Love History....all history is fascinating.
@Ophelia Vert Great video! You know in our heavily commercialized and modern world we have forgotten that while you can make money off of virtually everything:
*Only commerce has money and profit as the end goal.*
*Non commercial activities such as history does not have money as its end goal.*
The end goal of history is to learn.
@Ophelia Vert Wisdom has shown us through history what happens to those who do not learn from Her and those who do.
History is everything
I’m currently a second year history major that was starting to get worried about the choice I made 😭
It’s so much fun 🤩 history I’m
Obsessed 😍 and I love 💗 learning more facts about history it’s the best and it’s a dream of mine to become a historian
Loved this! Would love to see more history based videos!
Emily Wilson thank you Emily!! What kinds of things would you like to see?
@@OpheliaVert basically anything! 😂 I love history so anything about any era I’m all for! I would love to hear you talk about Latin and history together, I’m a classics student at uni and learning Latin alongside it so that would be cool!
History is what historians want it to be.
Nice work I appreciate your effort to get some of history items to youtube thanks alot I'm seeing forward if you can make a video about research in history.
I'm no historian or student but this was really interesting thanks
break_away_from_me thank you!!!
I understand, Im in auxiliary sciences and archives, and its really hard. Since im coming from physics background
J.M Roberts History of the world made use of the book for my Masters Degree in History.
When I’m older my dream job is to be a historian
great video, bravo!
I love your vids, keep it up!
Im at secondary education and I'm gonna do history as my future degree
Hey, why did you delete all your language learning videos? It’s a shame because I love those videos, however I respect your choice !
I'm afraid I don't know what an "RMA Medieval student" is. (Or more specifically, I don't know what "RMA" is an abbreviation for.)
Big Scary Steve sorry! I didn’t specify: it’s the Dutch equIvalent of an MPhil, a two year Master’s focused on research. It stands for Research Master’s
Doing MA in Ancient and Classical History from American Public University.
Not all history is rote memorization.
Thank you
Totally not on topic and sorry for not contributing to the discussion (: but the 'have a nice video' moment/statement is v cute
I am from India. What is the scope indian history in foregin country. I have completed master degree in indian ancient history art and culture
I want to become a historian and focus on Mesoamérican history and the history of the indigenous ppl of the Americas
Archeologists are not historians. Not by training they aren't.
@4:33 Perhaps #0 should be 'A Historian can best write on those experiences they actually lived through firsthand.'
偙 what an interesting (and controversial!) idea! I don’t personally agree but why do you think that?
@@OpheliaVert
When I behold archaeological sites or read ancient inscriptions, I _thirst_ for the chance to spectate and live it firsthand as a nonintervening ghost.
I really enjoy history and want to do it as a career but I couldn’t even get on a levels as my English was too bad and I just feel like I’m not gonna get there
video starts at 9:12
This was dope
I'm actually studying to become an Historian

Hi, thank you for the video. It was very helpful, even for someone already taking graduate classes and trying to narrow their focus. Do you know if there is a rough ratio of teaching to researching programs? I'm more interested in the latter and I'm wondering what my options will be. Thank you!

Thank you for this. Would you recommend doing a PhD and trying to get into academia? I am desperate, but worried about job security out there
Oh I’m not qualified to give advice on that, only just being about to start a PhD myself. Either way, good luck!
Very good
My dream job!
English accent and historian is like peanut butter and bread. Not all sandwiches are PB, but when it is PB...
I like history
What progress has been made to reduce the blantantly classcist lack of historical preservation of the everyday person? Even when mass-literacy was a thing in the early 20th century, academia refused to preserve their works, and they were likely held in local libraries, if not community libraries seperate from the government. Obviously, the internet archive project has made it impossible for academia to ignore the common person.
Can you make a video on what to do after high school if u want to pursue history as a major? I’m so lost and I am a senior in highschool and I am trying to find a good college that isn’t pricey but offers a lot in the field of history😫
i dont know what career i wanna do
