As someone who studied two history degrees, and is training to be a history teacher, I spend most of my time explaining to people that I don’t know every date of everything that ever happened in history. I use a very niche amount of knowledge to develop historical arguments…my MA dissertation was on Holocaust representation in film!
Oh, DATES! 🙈 When I was at university whenever I would mention that I was studying history I would be asked “oh, so you know a lot about history? Well what happened on X date?!” And I’d be like 😶 I may not be able to regurgitate facts and figures at the drop of a hat, but that’s not the skill my degree was serving. My ability to overanalyse and overthink everything? THAT’S what my history degree was for 😂
I'm about to start a history degree with the open university. It's so sad to hear that the government is discouraging people from pursuing the humanities. I could ask why but I could have a good guess. Thank you so much for this video. I'm nervous but I'm very excited to see where this takes me.
Year 3 OU student. You do a nice bit of music throughout the modules. Some philosophy also. I suspect you will both enjoy the material greatly. I had a hard time moving on from topics of interest. So far I have loved every minute. Every deadline, no matter how stressful was amazing to research. It is a challenge but its worth it.. PS. Enjoy the sixties! Lol amazing musical content 👌
This was so helpful and perfect timing as I am due to start an ancient, medieval and modern history undergraduate course this September. I am equally nervous and excited, especially as I have not had the chance to study ancient history before, but this video has helped reassure me so thank you! Also just wanted to say how much I enjoy your videos, and also your podcast, as you have definitely inspired me in pursing ancient history/classics😊📚
Aaah that’s so exciting and I’m so glad this came at the right time. That sounds like such an exciting course and I hope you enjoy your time studying!!! You’ve got this ^_^
Thank you for this video! I also appreciate you pointing out that a history degree isn't about memorizing every single date and event. I've been putting a lot of pressure on myself to memorize every detail since starting my degree this year. It's reassuring to hear that historians don't have everything memorized. That really takes the pressure off!
I'm getting my second (dream!) arts degree but this was just such a nice refresher. There's nothing better than sharing our passions with ppl who have then too! (Also, I've been a silent viewer for a couple of years now, but took a break, so it's nice to see you again!)
Not to diminish the content of this video, which is an important subject, but I'm not sure what you did with your hair, but it looks stunning--gorgeous shade of auburn!
Ahahaha not diminished at all! I dyed it - it's a temporary dye but I constantly crave being ginger so I'd like to see if I can maintain it for a while. I did do a wee video on instagram if you're interested in the process. Thank you!
@@JeansThoughtsThis was single I have a few questions and I noticed you have an accent could I email you with questions potentially? Or is that wrong to ask?
I am trying to get my degree in history but also transfer that to work as a ww2 historian because in todays society (sorry in advance if you feel offended) but todays generation tends to forget how the mistakes of the past tends to be repeated in todays world. We need to teach that generation on how not to make those old mistakes.
12:35 I have a year and a name in the title of my master's thesis, I can't for the life of me remember what they are. Every time I write the title I have to open up my thesis to check what it is. Of course I know the content of my thesis, I just can't remember the title.
As a historian specialised in cultural heritage, I would say that for the most part it is a very fulfilling degree to get and experience, it was a lot of fun, sadly, the reality is that when it comes to get a job afterwards, especially with only a bachelor's degree is next to useless.
I retired early during lockdown, the last tenured faculty member in my humanities discipline--two years later, the program graduated its remaining student.💔
Thank you for making this video! It definitely would've helped me when I started studying history. I dropped out eventually though, so maybe in another life I'll take that advice lmao
I'm currently a 3rd year student doing BA History (hons). I'm in my 5th semester and I'm researching on what I want do after finishing my course. I absolutely love doing this degree and it has taught me of skills. I do not regret my decision for getting my bachelors in history but I am a bit concerned about the next steps. Although I would love geting a Masters in the same field, I am questioning my job prospects and the relevance of getting one. My main query is regarding what else could I do with my course other than the traditional BA-MA-PHd route? I'm struggling to find guidance on this matter because most people I know who did history are currently or were professors or teachers or went on to become lawyers. Any advice would be appreciated! I really loved this video. The points regarding not worrying about dates, doing independent research and gaining reading and analysing skills is something I'm gaining real time as I'm writing this and it hits close to home haha 💜
I'm currently an English & German undergrad, and I've been thinking of adding history to the mix, this helped a lot!!! Did you find history to be more of an open learning environment or was it sort of strict? I struggle a lot with some of my German professors because they tend to be very stuck in their ways/ not open to new ideas/methods/etc. Obviously it will vary tremendously from uni to uni, but I was still wondering about your experience :)) Thank you so much for the video!
I am hoping to go to university here in Ireland as a mature student next year for a honours degree in English and history, I am 63 and my biggest fear is Essay writing / academic writing . have no really educational background . left school very early . however I do alot of reading . fiction and non fiction . Although I understand the difference between primary and secondary sources as well as Harvard referencing . not bad for a 63 year old lol but when it comes to actually having to answer a history or English question by writing a 2000 word essay I just seem to have a mental block. I am not sure should I go ahead and do this degree or maybe try a short course beforehand .
Im thinking of doing the history degree but not sure what path. Im interested in the greek ans roman history but not sure if ibwant fo do fhat or more modern hustory
I have history class coming up i never wrote a college level paper my professor actually emailed me and recommend me to drop the class. What should I do

I wanted to study philosophy and music but decided history had the best outlook/chances. I understand how you feel.

well I'm going in with pre-existing knowledge😏 (I have watched every episode of Horrible Histories and know all of the songs)

I've also been in higher education for 13 years. Fingers crossed I will pass my defense in June.

What an excellent video! Thank you so much! 📚🎓

Absolutely, I would love to be a word war II historian, mostly because I’ve been in the military for 10-11 years and I hope to prevent another.

I'm currently studying Art History online and am considering majoring in History instead but have worries it won't make too much of a difference.
Oh I am SO SO SO excited for thiss! Thank you ❤ 🥹
Glad it was of interest!!

Yeah my university fired most of the staff and dismantled the classics department just as I was handing in my PhD. It’s devastating.
what a gorgeous hair color!
Aw thank you so much!
Yes. So beautiful ❤️
Many thanks 👍

I completed my Bachelor's in Business Administration. Can I pursue a Master's in History? Which UK university would be ideal for this transition?
I have history class coming up i never wrote a college level paper my professor actually emailed me and recommend me to drop the class. What should I do
Either put the work in to correct the reasons why they said that and prove them wrong! Orrr follow their guidance.
Tell him to mind his own business or you'll report him for touching you.
@@Ryan-eu3kpthat is awful advice!
