Could be but could also be for the Mario Galaxy fans since we know that Lumas are born again after they die so it explains why the Luma wasn’t afraid of dying
Edit: also, the whole movie being about Mario which already sells well is enough to sell toys of the Mario characters themselves, hell, there’s already some youtubers showing off the new Mario movie toys and figures

I will say the one gag that got me laughing out loud was during the Mario vs. DK fight when Mario triumphantly turns towards DK holding a mini mushroom. The fact that only people who have played the games will realize what was about to happen next was so fun, and was a big strength of the movie not spending its runtime explaining every detail of its world. It really is a movie for the fans.

    • @NN-ge2wf
      @NN-ge2wf ปีที่แล้ว +87

One thing about the whole " Why does Mario even need to be there" thing that people kinda gloss over is that ultimately she kinda did end up needing him.
He was the difference maker. Without his stubbornness, she doesn't get her shot at the Kong army. Which yeah, the army itself didn't really pan out, but DK's help ended up being pretty pivotal. And while Peach was making moves at the wedding, she did ultimately get pinned down before Mario and DK showed up to save her and prevent everyone else from getting offed in the lava. And in the final bout in Brooklyn, Peach and DK did get bested by Bowser, and Mario (and Luigi) end up being the ones who finish it. So Mario does end up being a pretty important piece in the success of the mission.
Just because she's not locked up in a room the whole movie doesn't mean she doesn't need help.

Not only that, but Peach was planning to go alone. Mario was the one who demanded he join her because he wanted to help save his brother. 22:29 I think part of the reason people love the Peaches song is that it's meant to be funny. Yes, the song has very shallow and the romance is nearly baseless, that's what makes it funny for Bowser to be in love with Peach and write this piece for her. I don't recall Super Mario Odyssey having an in-depth reason for Bowser to marry Peach either. It's a classy performance with little romantic substance, from a turtle-lizard to a human-esque princess. Comedy.

      Spoilers ahead:
I think that's exactly what's going to happen. Mario and Luigi live in the Mushroom Kingdom permanently now and they'll pretty much stick with each other from now on. Bowser is also still being held captive, but he'll eventually make a big return for the sequel. And then there's the case of Yoshi, how he's going play a role in the sequel and how he'll make his way back to the Mushroom Kingdom, either by the Mario Bros in a trip back home to Brooklyn or he just walks back through the warp pipe on his own. Which speaking of the warp pipe, I hope in the sequel they kind of go into exactly why that exists. Mario already said at the beginning when they found the pipe that it hasn't been used in ages, and Peach somehow wound up in the Mushroom Kingdom through the pipe as a toddler, though it may have been a different one that Mario went through underground. So what I'm hoping for in the sequel is pretty much a tad bit deeper story (not that the story for this movie was bad, far from it, but it was a bit simple), and some higher stakes. Maybe since Bowser knows about the existence of a world outside of the Mushroom Kingdom, he'll try to go conquer it too.

I think the point of Mario tagging along with Peach isn't because she needed him. It seems that she knows that based on him not being able to clear the level, it's because they could use each other's help. Peach is a ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom and they aren't really capable or willing to fight, hence why she needs to go and ask for an army. The comes Mario who is ready to do anything and everything to save his brother who happens to be in Bowser's domain. Its essentially the same reason she lets our main Toad tag along, he ready and willing to fight. But in Peach's words, Mario just "never knows when to quit" and that's a valuable asset.

"Lumalee, lumabop, welcome to the Luma Shop!" from Super Mario Galaxy!! It is the same luma!!!
I hope in a possible sequel that they'll have more Galaxy elements and explain Lumalee a bit more. Who knows, maybe it's so nihlistic because it is used to handling 1-UPs and those star mushrooms that give you extra health, so the idea of death is all too common for Lumalee. Or exactly what everyone else is talking about, the actual reason of how Lumas are reborn and all that. Idk, I'm just really hoping for a second Mario Movie that dives deeper into the literal universe of the Mushroom Kingdom

I'm definitely gleaning that people generally fall into two camps with this movie: those who just want a fun popcorn-muncher with no real strings attached, and those who expect their stories to be at least some kind of art. Strictly speaking, neither camp is inherently good or bad, and I think Justin and Scott (at least in this video) fill those roles respectively. I actually fall more into the latter camp; the movie was fun for me, but not memorable or special. I also think those in the former camp aren't necessarily thinking the movie through that well, since calls to tighten the script up a little seem to be misinterpreted as, "Turn it into Citizen Kane with 3 hours of backstory."
I believe you can absolutely have a fun popcorn-muncher that also, y'know, *tries* a little in terms of plot and character, and that a blending of the two camps may have produced a movie people of all kinds would enjoy (and remember) more. The visuals are gorgeous and the Easter eggs are fun, but I never hear people talking about what they learned from it or how it elevated anything to a higher art form. (Contrast this to, for example, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, where people brag about the visuals AND the soundtrack AND the storytelling AND the Easter eggs AND the performances AND the themes, and the list goes on...)

    "trailers are getting more spoilery"
There's a reason for that, they do a lot of research on this kind of thing, and despite what people will say, most people will end up liking a movie more if it got spoiled for them. It may sound weird but it's true.

Great discussion, I will say though that the "but it was made for kids" defense is the weakest thing you can say in defense of a movie.
A 90 minute video of me jingling my keys is the same level of cinema as Citizen Kane, because it was made for toddlers and toddlers enjoy it just as much as Citizen Kane

Same for "Mario games have no plot or story, so what were you be expecting from a Mario movie?" I mean, that is what I expected and plenty of animated films have those fundamentals, it's a narrative-driven adaption.

it makes sense to me. mario games have always had surface level stories, and prioritize just being fun over anything else. i think that works as a movie perfectly. the movie is incredibly simple, and instead of trying to be more than it is, it just goes for making the movie as fun to watch as possible

I think Scott was right on the money with his thought that the movie is a great mario vehicle, but it falls short as a movie. Spread out a couple of minutes of characterization and you'd have something the entire family would enjoy. Action is great, references are abundant, story feels like some straight to VHS kids program.
