One tip I didn't see you mention: you can rank up your chocobo fairly quickly by doing the challenge log that requires you to kill 100 enemies near your level with your chocobo. Each week I swap to blue mage and go to the east shore of kholusia (east of the stilltide aetheryte) with my chocobo. I'll pull a group of 5 mobs with flying sardine, then kill them with ram's voice and ultravibration. Then I pull another 5 with flying sardine, use ram's voice to hold them, and kill them with both ends > surpanakha > phantom flurry. By the time I'm ready to pull another 5, my ultravibration cooldown is almost done so I just repeat from there until I get 100 kills.
Only thing I would add as people tend to miss it. If you feed your chocobo to change its colors it has to stay in the stable for the whole 6hours the timer is kinda miss leading because it just says new color in 6hours. So I recommend do it before getting off for the night
When using the marketboard for the onions, consider comparing the price to the seeds and growing them yourself in your apartment. There are pots you can use to grow them individually inside, but they will need to be maintained.
Idk if that was an old issue but I've never had trouble with my chocobo using Medica. It casts Regen as soon as my HP bar is less than full (on job changes even) and Cure if I get low. Then goes back to attacking. Better priorities than many players I've run across.
I guess it depends on which stance you have it set to. a neutral stance will have the choco using whichever skills it has acquired, which includes tank, dps or healing. if you set it a specific stance it will mainly use only those skill and occasionally a skill from the other trees, situation depending.
Yeah my Chocobo has a max healer spec and is level 14. And its pretty good about keeping choco regen on me and using choco cure when nessesary. I ususally just let it do whatever it wants anyway.
Some details that you didn't mention: 1) thav onions have to be used in the field, not in towns. 2) use thav onion after your chocobo hits the level cap. You can't use more than one at a time.
I dunno if they fixed it but leveling chocobo takes an incredible amount of time. Pretty much do everything you can along the way. Use chocobo stable and feed your bird every tme you can. Weekly log to get bonus exp. I took advantage of a bug when BLU came out. When you're BLU, AAR and I think HW field mobs gave a ridiculous amount of EXP. Turns out the bug effected chocobo's too and suddenly the the only known fastest way to rank 20 appeared. While people were freaking out about leveling BLU and getting skills, I warned people to level their birbs! I got from rank 11 to 20 in like 2-3 days? Yoshi-P acknowledged this bug but felt it wasn't game breaking enough so do an emergency hotfix and just postponed it until the next .1 update.
It was a slog trying to lvl mine, doing challange log, keeping it out whenever i could, etc. Then a couple of us decided to do all the shared fates and we had max lvl birds before we knew it. The fc used to give onions to members but we cleaned out the entire stock within days of EW release xD
My chocobo is rank 10 more than halfway through the bar and not gaining xp. I used an onion for rank 10 but now that i kill enemies for MSQ he gains no xp?!
Fairly new to game, so I followed most online advice and levelled healer tree to Cure then maxed DPS, then splitting between healer and tank ti level 12 now. Seems to work pretty well. Decent healing and noticeable dps.
great video, super informative, one thing though... the links were never posted in the description as you mentioned around 2:10... does anyone know what those quests were for the onions?
I never really bothered with my battle chicken. Never used it as companion or mount. He hasn't seen daylight since he was given to me. lol that almost a year ago.
Ima make a guess and say you were a melee class? I feel as a bard or a healer, your chocobo does so much to convenience you, be it slight aggro or healing, and honestly the healing gets insane. You've probably had a few solo ventures that could have been trivial had your chcobo been around, but hey wheres the challenge in that amirite?
The problem I'm having is that after using an onion to unlock rank 11, I'm stuck at rank 11 with 0 xp. Can't for the life of me figure out how to get the bird to gain any more experience to work my way towards rank 12. Fighting stuff around my level doesn't seem to be working and feeding food to gain experience at a stables doesn't seem to be an option either. Anyone have any ideas?
You get the thavnarian onion by market board or fc usually have extra to give you and then you feed it to your chocobo once at a level cap. Which then will level it to 12
@@BunBossFFXIV Thanks for the response. But that's not the problem. I used an onion to go from rank 10 to 11. Now I'm sitting at 0/1714000 exp in rank 11, and nothing I do earns any experience. I've tried doing Fates around my level with no luck. The option to feed the chocobo in the stables is orange as well, so I can't feed food to get any experience. Unless you're saying I need two thav onions in a row? One to go from 10 to 11, and another one to kick the experience earning back on at the beginning of rank 11? I do seem to recall a mention that you're supposed to have the bird summoned and not in the stable to use the onion. I fed the onion through the stables like a krakka root. I guess I'll try another onion.
In my experience while playing Final Fantasy I maxed out the healer skill tree. Because I am in parties while doing overland content sometimes, and medica could help out the party. But I do see that if you aren't into grouping up with others then I can see the justification of not getting medica. But honestly I haven't had a problem with my chocobo spamming medica over cure or regen. I've only ever seen it use medica once, and that was during a hunt in shadowbringers 😂😅 so I guess pick the healing aoe if you plan on playing with other people. That information is either outdated, or someone gave out incorrect information.
What poor game design to lock a game feature behind needing a house, something most people can’t get in the game. I don’t get the point in these elite features that punish other players that all pay the same sub.

My Chocobo is 20 and I don’t ever remember the healing be an issue. He uses choco regen most the time and still uses DPS skills from the DPS tree.

I wish they would add to this system. Raise it to 40 or something. There's a lot they could do with it.

@@astrofizzix4498 oh yea you have to have it out in the wild and use it from your inventory , NOT fed through the stable
Thanks for the tips! Where is the rank 20 bit please?

I got my Chocobo first at level 40 then at 43 mine can walk free But now I am at level 53 and mine still can´t fly
It’s not tied to chocobo level. That matches your character level. It based on msq content progress for arr
Good info, my man!
Appreciate it!
Thank you
I didn’t get my chocobo at lvl 20 or 30
It's a msq lvl 20, it's not your job lvl.

good stuff

It's not locked behind a feature that's inaccessible. There are stables in both rent apartments and fc houses. Both are very, very easily accessible.
