    Marco Polo Syndrome. The idea that you are going to be the first person to discover a place. You will meet a ton of expats in China with this trait, and they will often find tiny little cities to call their own. They often feel challenged or anti-foreigner when confronted with the fact that they are not the only ones there. Today we talk about this in depth.

    I'm an "old guy" expat Aussie and I've been here for almost 5 years now. I am definitely NOT like one of those other "old guys" you described. Winston's videos are part of the reason that inspired me to move to China. It was going to be for one year and now it's five. Not sure if I can stay longer because of the strict visa laws now. But I love your videos, because they really do show it like it is, both the good and the not-so-good. Keep 'em coming, and ignore the haters. Haters will hate no matter how much common sense or facts you try and drum into them. The problem is within themselves, not with you guys.

    There's a kind of expat one-upmanship in Taiwan, and it looks to be much the same over there. Foreigners here are often not friendly to one another, often deliberately looking away or pretending not to see other foreigners in the street, even in places where foreigners are not common. Online expat communities are often cancer. I always called the phenomenon Robinson Crusoe mentality, but Marco Polo syndrome describes it aptly as well. Whenever I find myself criticizing another foreigner's Mandarin, I always remind myself that I've never actually listened to a recording of myself, so I might be even worse.

    • @neiana
      @neiana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      People become expats for different reasons and they all think that their reason is fine, but in reality most expats think they magically found a paradise on their own and were somehow special in that regard. Once someone else shows up, the attention gets divided until expats become "normal". Once they're "normal" then it isn't special, or a paradise.
      We're weird.
      (but think about it... if we LEAVE somewhere to have a certain lifestyle, and then more and more people show up from where we left, then the new place becomes like the old place.)

      Meanwhile, a number of houses here in Stockholm that people live in were built in the 1600s. The foundations of a number of other houses in Stockholm are from the 1300s. (The oldest building in Sweden that people live in is from 1240, located in the World Heritage city of Visby, but that was a storage facility, remade to a house not much more than a 100 years ago)., Sorry, but the source is in Swedish: www.avestatidning.com/artikel/allmant/har-finns-sveriges-aldsta-hyreshus The house I live in is just 15 years old. It feels "new" to me.

      It's an easy question and a complicated answer. For starters commodity prices dropped and fell through the floor. They were investing in them before the crash of 2007. The state demands 7 % growth rates, and the norm is 2-4%, driving up inflation yet wages remain stagnant. Confucious ideas very much exist in China despite the communist revolution, and it is a caste system. The Maintenance business is not driven by free market prices, never has been and the wage for the cooli is determined by the state to control inflation even further. Their's lack of trained maintenance people and shortages due to outlawing guilds and unions.

      I am also interested to understand if there is some kind of widespread mentality that allows poor work to be done. Do the Chinese tend toward a "good-enough" attitude or any other general work ethic problems? I consider Chinese business and products unmatched in the world market place, with China doing things that are untenable anywhere else. And I have heard that president Xi is interested to overcome stereotypes and usher in an age of technological advancement and quality. This begs the question. Are quality and effort taught at home in China? How much does the majority of China care about it's output?

      china doesn't have so much money. They have tons of debt liablities. Some companies use the same "asset" to go to different banks for loans, then they sell the asset! There "shadow assets and shadow liabilities" all over.
      Chinese also don't build things to last. New apartments start to crumble and break in less than a year. Just because they have tons of housing doesn't make it livable or lasting.

    • @kin2naruto

      Square bushes take about a day, once or twice a year, with a weed whacker. As long as THAT much gets done - they keep getting the contract money for "landscaping". They are clearly not doing any of the other tasks that normally fall under a "landscaping" contract in the US. But... they probably aren't getting paid for that either.

      Thank you for letting me know. Either way it is disgusting. I’m a mixed ( black and white) from New Jersey and was raised to believe we are all the human family. I grew up with white and African Americans grandparents. They both taught me we should learn from the past and all work together.
      I think in the case of South Africa you have people that want to punish people alive today for things long ago. That don’t see by doing that they are allowing themselves to become the monster.
      Also if they spend less time on hate they could have more time to solve South Africa’s water shortage that is dangerous levels, the crime and failing economy.
      They could learn from many in history blaming and killing one group of people for all the problems of a country never works.

    I like your content and topics. They are very often quite informative. But at least speaking for myself, I hate those long videos like this one. Information that could be summarized in 5 minutes takes 20 minutes to watch. As someone who is interested in China and someone who has lived there and still trying to understand their culture and life there, I would prefer a much shorter and to-the-point format. Just some feedback.

      I'm actually completely the opposite, whilst I am listening to what they're talking about, I'm also enjoying the scenery and looking at where they're riding... And laughing at them trying to take street bikes through a pond!
      I do ride bikes too, so I guess I do pretty much the same when I go out and about on a random ride, I just don't take youtube along with me.
      I actually found ADVChina first. I didn't have a serious interest in China, but was enjoying the riding. Now I follow all their channels and Vivi and Hu Knows and have learnt a hell of a lot about China.

    FWIW, the two of you are my three favorite channels, followed by those of your wives. The root of all the shite from the native English speakers has to be just plain envy - the green-eyed monster. You're doing things they aren't and can't and it galls them to see you do it and do it well. I and (obviously) thousands of others are glad you're out there showing us things that most of us will never be able to see for ourselves. BTW, I think I have a couple of spare snorkels if you need them for the next ride...

      These early expats may also sense that a few foreigners are a novelty, but if it turns into a flood, resentment against foreigners always follows. Weaponized migration is causing this effect all over Europe and the US.

      Hs Hs that is true, i dont want to see east asia suffer the self inflicted wound the west has... multiculturalism is a farce and too many foreigners will trigger a very natural backlash

    • @NJ-wb1cz
      @NJ-wb1cz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hs Hs, ahahahaha. I'm sorry, but are you seriously afraid of westerners OVERCROWDING Chinese? It's like Inuits overcrowding Americans.

    • @hshs5756
      @hshs5756 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bear Arms, "overcrowding" isn't necessary to trigger backlash, just a visible presence, _especially_ when they start marrying your women, who are in short supply already. And the more homogeneous the culture, like China, the lower the threshold to trigger alarm.

    • @hshs5756
      @hshs5756 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      " resentment against foreigners always follows"
      Bear Arms, do you see the word "Westerners" in that quote from my comment? This is a universal human reaction to the influx of too many outsiders. There is a lot of resentment against Chinese populations in Southeast Asian nations. If millions of Europeans flooded into Africa demanding welfare, Africans wouldn't like it. If there were as many millions of US citizens in Mexico illegally as there are Mexicans in the US, Mexicans wouldn't like it.

    Not hating, but imho everybody that lives in a country for a longer period (>3 years) and/or is planning to stay there (you both are married to a chinese and at least winston doesn't seem to want to go back to south africa at any point) should get as proficient as possible in the local language. My english is sufficient for everything i do, but if i'd live in an english speaking country i would still propably turn to a professional to work on my accent (even though it is virtually non-existant compared to many others) and try to further expand my vocabulary. just my two cents.

    • @lenya2004
      @lenya2004 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Nobody cares if you think that foreigners should get super "proficient". Youve never done it yourself, you havent grown up in it. Winston is right when he says that it is enough to speak and read everyday language as long as youre not interested in ancient poems and shit. Whats the point proving your new neighbours that you perfectly speak their language? Youll be a foreigner to most anyway. Theyll never accept you 100%, youll never be one of them. Heck, not even your child will be 100%. Speaking 2 or 3 languages from completely different language-trees is not easy, its tiring and its not very common, thats why its ok not speak perfectly and seriously nobody cares if you have an accent or miss a vocab or two. So to this point it is just nationalistic idealistic nonesense youre thinking. grow up.

    • @ramonburgos6351
      @ramonburgos6351 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most folks can't get rid of their accent because secondary languages learned after 4 or 5 years of age are learned in a different part of the brain. That part of the brain cannot identify accent while speaking.

    • @lewis6590

      Charlene Sipp sounds like the voice of experience. Living in Korea, everyone expects that i can barely speak korean. When i do i either get patronizing compliments or people think it just coincidentally sounded like korean but must be english (?)
      I'm learning the language for fun but if you can order food, ask about simple problems, take taxis and give directions etc, you're good. You never NEED to discuss abstract stuff and even if you do most people will not take you seriously. I have a friend who's fluent in Korean, been here >10 years, works in a job using only Korean. He is still just peoples' "foreign friend" that they lose interest in when the novelty wears off.

      Ramon Burgos that is just not right! Anybody can get proficient at any time. The "Critical period theory" is rejected by almoust every linguistic researcher, there is just no empirical data for saying there is this one right age to learn a language. On the contrary, grown ups learn better, because the can enhance their implicit learned language skills with explicit learned grammer rules etc.

    For what it is worth I really enjoy watching everything you guys do. I'm 62 years old and partially disabled. Although I have had many adventures in my lifetime none of them involved living in another country. As I get older I really regret that I didn't see more of the world and now it is difficult for me because of my limited mobility. So, that said I live vicariously through your adventures and the adventures of a couple other vloggers in Thailand. Chances are I'll never get to China or SE Asia and the National Geographic sort of travelogues are just not how I would like to see the world. As a former motorcyclist your bikes add another level that is fun to watch (I was actually struggling as you tried to get your bikes through the mud LOL). OK. I've tugged on your jacket enough now, but I wanted to thank you both and please keep it up where ever you go.
