Can Japan, South Korea shake off 'xenophobic' and 'racist' labels in bid to welcome foreign workers?

  • Labour-starved Japan and South Korea have been formulating new policies aimed at bringing in more foreign workers, but the countries are suffering from a perception problem, having been accused of being 'xenophobic' and 'racist' by some.
    CNA's East Asia Tonight takes a deep dive into the issue with our regional correspondents as well as ex-diplomat Akio Kawato, the former Japanese Ambassador to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

    Look at the crime rates in Korea. 37% of violent crimes are committed by foreigners. Foreigners are only about 3% of the Korean population. Drug usage of Korea has risen up to 600% in the last years with the growing number of foreigners (mainly Thailand, China, and Vietnam) in Korea. Of course, people are cautious.

I did the math with arithmetic alone the likelyness is 12 times, but it seems unrealistic, the foreigners from Korea must be from highest crime index countries.

      Maybe I got a more favorable treatment due to my carrying an American passport; however, I remember back in 2016, Incheon Airport had the worst customer service I have received in Asia. I wrote a very harsh review of it and advised them to go to Narita and learn customer service. By the next year, I noticed an improvement in customer service. I went to Seoul to watch the musical "Death Note" in January 2017 and told myself that I would be fine once I got past the crabs at Incheon. No crabs by that time. Things were better. Also, staying at a hanok was more pleasant than staying at a hotel (except the heated floors were giving me migraines! 😭)
      I hardly had a problem in Japan once I started speaking the language during my visits. I easily blended in by that time.

    It's not that East Asia is xenophobic (a fear of outsiders), it's that they love their own culture too much to purposefully make it disappear like Western countries have done and are doing with their own cultures. If you asked the Japanese if they would trade their unique culture for an extra percentage point of GDP growth, I doubt many people would make that choice.

      There are many reasons, but I think one big reason is because economic growth increases a nation's immunity to invasion, including economic warfare. A nation is most vulnerable when its economy is stagnant, and its military is underfunded.

      Tbh I think Japan should adopt a policy similar to the one Thailand used in the past in which it demanded its ethnic Chinese minority integrate into society by adopting Thai culture and letting go of Chinese culture. Now Thai and Thai-Chinese are one to the point that nobody will differentiate between the two in a way you see in other countries. I say this because unlike Singapore which has mostly accepted Malaysians who are ethnically and culturally virtually the same as Singaporeans, in addition to Chinese, Indians and Indonesians, Japan doesn't have a source country that is basically a mirror image of Japan in terms of culture and ethnicity. Japan is mostly accepting migrant workers, skilled workers and students from an array of other Asian countries because they are the most similar to Japan in terms of culture but that doesn't mean the same. So if ever Japan has to turn towards permanent immigration and some of these skilled workers and students do get to remain permanently in the country, they should ordered to be Japanised to the point that they have no connection with the culture they were born in. It sounds crazy but real world examples exist like Thailand that prove it can be successful.

      @MiguelDLewis 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@user-jt3dw6vv4x Complete assimilation like that would make sense except:
      1. There are territorial disputes between Japan and China. China wants to colonize Japan so it can have power projection access to the Pacific. There are already many Chinese spies operating in Japan. Attempting to assimilate them would give China a huge strategic advantage.
      2. Integration, like the Singapore model, provides more economic opportunity than the Thai assimilation model because it gives a country greater access to multiple nations for trade and military partnerships. Singapore is able to cooperate more with powers like India, the US, UK, Malaysia, Philippines, and Taiwan because of their multicultural polyglot society.
      3. Thailand's birthrate isn't declining like Japan's, so it has the luxury to demand complete assimilation. Japan doesn't have that luxury. Also, Japan's past imperialism and attempts at assimilating Korea bar it from making such a demand. Integrating multiple Asian ethnicities under strict laws while respecting their cultural identity, like Singapore does, is Japan's best bet.

    • @user-jt3dw6vv4x
      @user-jt3dw6vv4x 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@MiguelDLewis Sorry the Thailand case was just an example. Japan isn't accepting people from China on the scale that it is from countries in South and Southeast Asia. I actually understand what you're saying but the Japanese look for workers outside of East Asia. There is also a Chinese minority in Japan that has existed in the country for a very long time and they are well integrated into Japanese society.
      I have to respectfully disagree here. Singapore is diverse but it has its own culture. A Singaporean-Chinese and a Singaporean-Indian don't actually have anything in common with China and India respectively. They have been living in Singapore for centuries and identify as Singaporeans. In fact, in Singapore there is long standing xenophobia and racism towards PRC Chinese and Indians from India as well as well documented extreme hatred towards other Southeast Asians, particularly from Malaysia and the Philippines that has led to the Singaporean government calling out statements made by locals towards foreigners. Singapore's ethnic diversity hasn't helped it maintain connections with other countries, that's purely because they adopted a policy of non-alignment and to "be a friend to all and an enemy to none".

    • @user-jt3dw6vv4x
      @user-jt3dw6vv4x 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MiguelDLewis In regards to Thailand, the assimilation process of the Chinese happened hundreds of years ago when ethnic Chinese were migrating to Thailand. This happened a long time ago, sorry I should've been more clearer. It's not a modern example. Thailand also has a declining fertility rate, in fact it's lower than Japan's fertility rate and stands at 1.16, making it the second lowest fertility rate in Southeast Asia after Singapore's 0.97 fertility rate. Singapore's case isn't actually about integrating multiple Asian ethnicities. Singaporeans are mostly of Chinese, Malay and Indian descent so as a result, the Singaporean government accepts immigrants from Malaysia, China, Indonesia and India. Most of them are from Malaysia who are just like Singaporeans and mostly of Chinese, Malay and Indian descent and culturally very similar as they were once part of the same country. The case of Singapore is that it is very strict in who is allowed in but being ethnically Chinese, Malay, Indian and from Malaysia puts you at a much, much higher advantage than every other nationality because Singapore strives hard to maintain the demographics of the country which are 74% Chinese, 14% Malay, 9% Indian and 3% Others (mostly Eurasians). These have been the demographics of the country for hundreds of years. So the government wants to keep it the same to maintain stability, to make sure the Malay and Indian minorities don't get drowned out by immigrants and to make sure the Chinese know that they aren't shrinking in size.

      They are extremely racist and xenophobic than majority white nations like Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Russia & other European nations. I love their technology & other innovations in STEM but their character & attitudes esp. towards non-whites that came from under-develop/developing nations are so distasteful & bad that it discourages you to visit them. That's why do not be fooled by their media & entertainment, they purposely made them so that you will fantasize & idolize these people but in truth they hate you.

    The term "racism" also worked well for Singapore 🇸🇬 and China 🇨🇳 when Mr Chew, the TikTok CEO, were asked point blank during his US Senate questioning about his connection with the authoritarian surveillance Chinese regime.
    - It was a simple Yes No answer, but he tried to skirt the question.

    If it's not hate, what is it? Reasons for Uyghur detention in one of 380 Xinjiang camps in China 🇨🇳 include:
    - having a beard,
    - wearing a veil,
    - applying for a passport,
    - possessing a Quran,
    - praying,
    - downloading WhatsApp and
    - having too many children.
