Ha, i think he's mentioned that Kahler trem in just about every other interview. He had to be kidding when he said "i dont know if I've ever told that story before"
If I could somehow magically inherit the guitar skills of any living guitarist, it'd be Brent Mason (with Duke Levine a close second)...Brent's playing and musicality actually gets me high And he's such an excellent dude to boot Thanks for doing this Robert - what a privilege to spend such in depth, quality time with a true master
Brent is one of my favorite guitarist. As a kid I’d watch TNN on Saturday mornings and I’d see Brent shredding on his gray tele. I was totally enamored with his playing and I still am. I almost got his Valley Arts sig but I’m glad I waited because Fender did it right. I got mine soon after they were released. I got lucky with a lighter one at 7.76lbs because a lot of them tend to be heavier. I absolutely love its versatility. Robert great work👍.
This series is amazing Robert. I feel like I’ve waited 25 years for these videos you’re doing now. Thank you for all your great work. Brent is the king.
@@ryangunwitch-black you have Brent, Vince Gill, Eddie Van Halen, SRV, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Albert King, Eric Clapton, Billy Gibbons, Prince, etc. There are a sea of Monsters. He is definitely up there.
One (of many) important skills of a session musician is being easy to work with, which speaks to being a good hang, good person. There are SO many good players, why work with an a$$?
One of many of my guitar heroes!! In my very humble opinion Danny Gatton, James Burton, Roy Clark and Brent Mason are top notch! There's obviously arguments for better players, but stylistically they're some of my favorites!!
Great interview and welcome to mid TN. When Brent and Johnny Hiland were both in town no guitar was safe lol. Saw them together at Douglas Corner in 2015 and what a jam.
He is legend!!! There are tele players that play their thing and do it well. Brent plays everything well and has more styles put together like speaking 10 different languages…. His guitar mastery is without a doubt the number one recorded sounds in history…. Steve Lukather is his Rock equal…. Just phenomenal how he plays!!! God Bless You Brent. You make us all look at our guitars differently knowing we can always do more!! Thank You!!
Great interview! Brent is such an incredible guitarist and that Tele is a classic. Almost reminds me of Joe Strummer’s class Tele, but with less wear and tear. I’ve watched tons of interviews with Brent and he’s such an easy going guy. It’s interesting to me how he gets kind of tongue-tied when he talks, almost a bit spacey, but his playing is always perfect; smooth, fast and effortless. Greatness.
Awesome, Robert. I think Brent is one of the absolute best guitarists in the world. His jazz playing is so beautiful and his country playing is so cool. Brent is very funny and wise, i've noticed in his interviews/rig rundowns. I love this, thank you.
I'm going to go ahead and write a comment now, twelve minutes into this. This is great. I keep hearing excellent guitarists bring up Brent Mason. This morning is the first time I have seen and heard him. Really cool video, Robert. I sure am glad to have learned about you via Tom. Also, your playing is awesome. Thanks for the great work.
Back in the mid - late 70's someone dropped off one of the Hagstrom guitars at my place and I got to play that guitars for 2 days it was nice....I miss that guitar
I remember hearing “Pick It Apart” by Mark O’Conner on the New Nashville Cats album … and my jaw Dropped when Brent’s solo kicked in. Being more of a rock / metal guy growing up … the last time my jaw dropped like that was on Yngwie’s “As Above, So Below” solo in ‘83. Also seeing the Eat Em and Smile tour in 1986 with Vai and Sheehan. I miss that jaw dropping “what the F was That!” feeling. Wish we could bottle it. lol 😂
I'm listenin' to that right now. Brutal. if you wanna feel the WTF factor, listen to an Italian young fella, Matteo Mancuso. he just reinvented guitar. All the best from West Spain brother.
I'm glad we got this video. It shows more behind the scenes of his stories with the guitar. Instead stories of the guitar it's self. Great player, a hero of mine for sure.
I have watched your channel over the years and it's great to see the Nashville guys . I follow most of them and seen a few guys live in town. Thanks for the work you put into these posts. I also subscribed to your channel.
Great interview Rob! I always thought Brent Mason looked a bit angry and annoyed while playing onstage but he's actually a funny friendly fella. (They made an exact replica of his body primer Tele, I don't think he's too interested in that Telefaker).
Great interview, what a player! I can relate on the Kahler vibrato tailpiece, sucked the life right out of one of my guitars too. Fantastic job with yet another National treasure from Nashville
Thank you Brent Mason is one of my Favorite Players almost bought one of his teles like that at Carter Vintage about a month ago but i bought that sunburst 65 Gibson byrdland instead awesome Vince Gill EP3 and this was awesome been playing for a long time but my 13 year old nephew is getting really good he took a class with Denny Jiosa at Cumberland in July at GWP camp Hope to see Vince and Brent and Brad and or Guthrie and Tom Bukovac play down there next time I get down there From OLATHE Kansas Thanks Again love the videos and to Listen to Brent Play
I was a metalhead into the US Army, went to Ft Jackson, came out a huge Alan Jackson fan and still am. I remember trying to play some and being stunned at how hard it was for me. I'm going to be singing Chatahoochie all day now... And that's fine by me. Awesome history lesson for me because I always think of country as session guitarists and I don't know them. Page doesn't count right? I have a lot to learn. Aha he hates treble lol, that explains the mini.
Killer interview Robert!!! Been a big fan of Brent & his work for a while but it wasn't til the "i hate treble" comment that it all clicked why i like his tone so much! ( i have treble sensitivity manly in my left ear)
Thanks, Robert. My favorite guitarist! And to come to now that he's a Home Skooler - that's way cool. So many great solos from Brent, but one of my newest favorites is "The Things You Said To Me" by The Mavericks on the great "What a Crying Shame" album. If you haven't heard it - give it a listen. It's from 1:37 to 2:05 in the song. I'm not 100% it was BM, but I'd love for someone to confirm. It was so great in your video to be able to see and hear the real deal Tele. Woah!
Country, blues, jazz, pop, rock... Brent plays everyting. Fantastic guitar player. Incredible right hand technique. Cheers!! He uses Fender Deluxe Rerverb at home?
Brent is a legend. One of the numerous guitar players everyone has heard play, but nobody knows who they are. It's actually kind of sad, this guy dedicated a lifetime to guitar playing, most people has heard him play, almost nobody knows who he is. I point this out to all of my students learning guitar. I don't want to set unrealistic expectations. The truth is this, you can dedicate your life to your art, you may do amazing things, you may find yourself in amazing circumstances, nobody will know who you are or even remember your name. Be prepared for that if you work very hard. If you don't work hard enough, you'll get substantially less or possibly nothing. Go.
I remember talking to Sid Hudson on the phone for an hour when I was a kid. He took the time to answer all of my questions. Brent is my biggest guitar influence.
The Hagstrom Swede (LP style) and Scandia (335-like w/ F holes) are both killer guitars from the 1970's. They are as good as guitars get and have a 23 1/2 scale length so they play like butter.
I preferred the original 67 to the custom shop the front pick was warmer I have a 67 with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and the pick ups are just wormer than any custom shops i have .i have a guitar i had built back in 97 that has the pickup configuration that Mr Mason has and just recently had it wired like he has and its a great guitar. I love the guitar geeking videos you do keep it up .
This video offers some great insights into WHY you love the songs you do. Guitars and amps have actual personalities due to the source/quality of the materials and the construction of the electronics. Erik "Fingers" Ray (Gustafson - younger brother of Wylie of Wylie and the Wild West) refers to his guitars as having that "Tele spank". That's what he called the tone he chased when looking for electric solid bodies. With the right amp and pedals, you can build a versatile stable of tone fillies for getting out and using whenever the need arises. I didn't know about Brent Mason prior to this exposure. He's a guy I'm going to have to research out in depth. As much famous music as he's been a part of, it does not appear to have changed him at all.
He legit had his fingerprints all over the country radio boom of the ‘90s. You can pick him out just by hearing one line of his solos. Or even the fills during the verses!
Cool video! It’s fun to hear him some of his iconic licks. Lol.. I stream TH-cam videos on my tv all the time, so at 10:19 I could’ve sworn I heard a cat meowing. In fact, I thought it was my older cat. 🤦🏼♂️
I have a Series Model...and i love it! Previously i have a Valley Arts signature in Black Burst...also great. The 67 is warmer and punchier than the others...dry wood maybe?
A Brent mason TH-cam channel would make more money than Brent's entire session work which is phenomenal! When you have Marty Schwartz and Brett Papa making more than legends then something is wrong with this picture. Get it going Brent! Beat them all at the game because you and Dann are way ahead of all of them by a long shot!
00:18 Wow, you'll find a lot of people that can play Jiffy Jam just like Jerry Reed, but thanks just monkey business. Some can play it, Brent Mason understands it and interpret it freely. What a nugget!
The piece Brent plays at the start of the video is “First Rule of Thumb”, not “Jiffy Jam”. It’s Brent’s own composition, although obviously Reed inspired.
You gotta do a video in this series about Brad Paisley and his famous 68 paisley guitar! That would be a very interesting video. There's hardly any content about his guitar and I think it would be so cool!
It’s not what songs did he play on it’s more like what songs did he not play on. WOW!
You got that right!
your move to nashville is definitely one of the best things for this channel Robert! We get to See the Best of the Best!
Ha, i think he's mentioned that Kahler trem in just about every other interview. He had to be kidding when he said "i dont know if I've ever told that story before"
10 a penny.
If I could somehow magically inherit the guitar skills of any living guitarist, it'd be Brent Mason (with Duke Levine a close second)...Brent's playing and musicality actually gets me high
And he's such an excellent dude to boot
Thanks for doing this Robert - what a privilege to spend such in depth, quality time with a true master
Yes. Brent, Duke, and Redd. Best of all three worlds. Throw in some Greg Koch for good measure. ❤
Brent Mason is one of the greatest session players of all times. I've enjoyed many country music songs from the 90's that this man played on
It does not matter what he plays.....whenever I hear Brent play I am speechless and always want more......who I consider a National Treasure.
Thanks to Mr Mason for sharing his time with us!!!
Brent is one of my favorite guitarist. As a kid I’d watch TNN on Saturday mornings and I’d see Brent shredding on his gray tele. I was totally enamored with his playing and I still am. Brent is a legend! He did for country music was define the entire 90's catalog ! We long for those sounds here in 2024!
This series is amazing Robert. I feel like I’ve waited 25 years for these videos you’re doing now. Thank you for all your great work. Brent is the king.
Brent is absolutely up there in the best guitarists of all time.
Dude. He’s an absolute monster.

What a guy! He’s long been one of my favourite players on the planet.
It’s so interesting how all these top session players seem to be very nice and extremely objective
One (of many) important skills of a session musician is being easy to work with, which speaks to being a good hang, good person. There are SO many good players, why work with an a$$?
Makes ya wonder, don’t it. 😂
Pros
This guy is totally inspirational!!! Love his playing!!!
One of many of my guitar heroes!! In my very humble opinion Danny Gatton, James Burton, Roy Clark and Brent Mason are top notch! There's obviously arguments for better players, but stylistically they're some of my favorites!!
Wow ! Man oh man , idolizing this guy for some time. Seems like a down to earth dude.
Excellent work Robert! Brent Mason is just amazing!
Can't wait to get your episode up :)
Great interview and welcome to mid TN. When Brent and Johnny Hiland were both in town no guitar was safe lol. Saw them together at Douglas Corner in 2015 and what a jam.

Thank you for being a good guy and a positive person.

Cool interview. Loved hearing him dial up different tones on the fly even with just the smaller pedal board. I bet it sounded amazing in that room!
Amazing series, Robert... what a gift this is to all of us guitar nerds. Thank you very much!
He’s the best session guitarist of all time! Very good interview!!!
Didn't know who he was and because of you i am glad to hear this incredible experience with a genuine country club.
This series is the best thing to happen on this channel in a while. Love hearing these conversations.
Great Interview Robert!..Thank you🙏🏻
Just saw John Mayer at the Sphere in Vegas playing his Brent Mason custom shop Tele.
I have watched your channel over the years and it's great to see the Nashville guys . I follow most of them and seen a few guys live in town. Thanks for the work you put into these posts. I also subscribed to your channel.
So cool man. I love this series! Brent is a legend, and it’s a treat to see and hear him on here. Take care guys!
One of the GOAT's of modern country. Thx Brent!
Great interview Rob! I always thought Brent Mason looked a bit angry and annoyed while playing onstage but he's actually a funny friendly fella. (They made an exact replica of his body primer Tele, I don't think he's too interested in that Telefaker).
I love the players who have to make a guitar to suit them. This is how iconic guitars are born. This guy is such a great guitarist
❤ this is a wonderful interview. I think Brett Mason is great.
Great interview, what a player! I can relate on the Kahler vibrato tailpiece, sucked the life right out of one of my guitars too. Fantastic job with yet another National treasure from Nashville
He is hilarious and down to earth. Thank you for doing this!
What a legend “ an inspiration for anyone that plays guitar
Hoo-ee! What a monster! I dig that "The Wrecking Crew" guitar strap, too!
Great interview!

Fabulous interview!!! Very interesting & funny too. Great guitarist.
Thanks for doing this one. Also, thanks Brent for allowing us in.
Awesome interview. Good work brother. Thanks
Man, I love this series! Thanks Robert!
Great interview Robert! Brent is a legend for sure!
Larry Coryell played a Hagstrom Swede during his Eleventh House era and did ads with this guitar. They were quite good guitars!
I remember that too. The ones I saw and played were quite heavy but back then heavy was supposed to sustain better.
Yes they are excellent imho. At least that’s how I remember them anyway
Love this! Interesting! Brent my favorite of all time! Got to meet him at 3rd and Linsley. Grrrreat! Thanks for this video!

Mahalo guys! Great interview.
I love these videos. Hopefully you can do one with Dan Aurbach about his old Tele. I forget the year, but Uncle Larry loves it so it must be good.

Loving these episodes mate! Keep up the amazing work!

Amazing player with a killer guitar! If i ever got a second tele it would be this one!
Great episode Robert!!
Cool post Robert! Brent seems the like the kind of guy you'd love to go have a beer with!
Brent is such an incredible guitarist and that Tele is a classic. Almost reminds me of Joe Strummer’s class Tele, but with less wear and tear.
Great episode Robert!
BTW, my current fave stompbox is my old V1 Wampler Hot Wired pedal
Indispensable for gigging with smaller 1x12 combos
FANTASTIC job Robert!
Excellent! Thank you

Working on getting him on here :)

His 335 sounded better after the flood oddly enough. Always loved working with Brent.
Great interview . Interesting how it's hard to beat a Good ole Fender Tele with a Good ole Fender amp .
He’s a contracted player for Band in a Box, as well. Thanks!
Very cool. Brent is the man
Great job, friend!
Am I the only one sweating bullets every time he bends that neck!? STHAP! :D
Evidently…. Jk
Don’t put Strings on yours. They bend the neck. Better leave it stringless.
Brent’s look at the start when he says thanks for doing the interview was 100% “why tf wouldn’t I do the interview.”
Nashville cats are the real deal.
00:18 Wow, you'll find a lot of people that can play Jiffy Jam just like Jerry Reed, but thanks just monkey business. Some can play it, Brent Mason understands it and interpret it freely. What a nugget!

I think it was Kerry Livgren, guitar player for Kansas, who used a Hagstrom Swede.
Great stuff!!
I Love this new series
Pat Smear played a Hagstrom ( and still does sometimes) with the Foo Fighters. Elvis had one too.
How about pap?
