@ 1:09:45, for the last 38 years I've wondered about how Sutcliffe could have ever reached home plate before Sandberg was tagged out at 3rd base. It has never made any sense.
Thanks for posting these games. I’m really enjoying watching this one with Steve Stone doing much more of the announcing. I was 12 when this game was played, and I was supposed to be in bed around the time the game started. I quickly figured out how to “watch” the later games that year. I’d hurry to bed and then turn on my radio as quietly as possible to take in the game. I was groggy at school the next day, but I was a happy girl. I used to think I totally gotten away with it and that no one knew. I found out later that my dad had figured it out but didn’t give me a hard time about it since my grades were good. 😀
That's awesome! I used to do the same thing. When I'd go to bed, I'd always try to pick up sporting events on the radio. I lived in Iowa so I usually couldn't pick up the Cubs. I would have to settle for the Minnesota Twins. KMOX out of St. Louis was a strong station. So once in a great while if they were playing the Cardinals at night I might get lucky and be able to pick it up.
In 1985 and '86, Steve Stone did the play-by-play for the middle three innings while Harry was on radio with Dewayne Staats doing color. Starting in 1987, Stone and Staats flip-flopped roles in the middle three innings
'84 and '85 i never missed a Cubs game on WGN.....was 8 yrs old and can still remember Harry and Steve.....Van Halen's "JUMP" and the Delta airlines promos
Good times, I didn't miss too many games either during that time. Probably didn't see this one though. Would have been a 9pm start, I was only 10 at the time, would have had to gone to bed.
In the 90s into the 2000s me and my dad never missed a Afternoon Cubs game on channel 26 WGN. And we lived didn't live in Chicago or the mid west, we lived next to the Border in San Diego, CA. He was a big Cubs fan. Great memories. R.I.P
Cubs were the the defending 1984 NL East champs, at this time Not only were they a bit offensively challenged, but they were also smarting from that heartbreaking NLCS loss to San Diego. Despite this, the Cubs were sitting pretty in mid June at 35-19, 4 games in 1st place and coming off a 5 game winning streak. Then the season started to turn. Immediately after, they lost 13 straight in June. They were treading water in July, but then August rolled around. Two 7 game losing streaks along with two 5 game skids in September wrote this season off, and ushered in three years of subpar baseball. Cubs would win the East again in 1989 in a wild, streaky season!!!
This was right around the time the Cubs’ entire starting rotation went on the DL just about simultaneously. That had a lot to do with why they went south in the standings.
My nostalgia meter just blew up!
Love these vintage games, great to see players I grew up watching.Thank you.
Harry was a radio man in a TV world. That sign-off, however brief, actually choked me up a little. Lovely stuff, and thanks for posting.

Cubs showcasing little league base running
Love your story ❤️ ⚾️
I like watching Fernandomania pitch in the majors.
One of many Cubs games on WGN that kept getting blacked out in Los Angeles anytime they played the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.
