Me three. Happy Independence Day. I do wish I remembered to wear an American flag shirt. Watching this scene was the least I can do for Independence Day.
I think the most stirring moment in this scene is not the declaration itself, but John Dickinson being commissioned as a Brigadier General. Dickinson, despite his later resignation of the commission as an officer, was a man of deep integrity and his willingness to die on his own rather than send others to serve in his stead is admirable and a quality sorely missed among those who now send young men to die for them today. We need more men like John Dickinson.
Very admirable that Adams admired his character later. Even though he was in opposition of independence his thoughts on it were more pragmatic than hasty. You can understand his reasoning as to his resignation and vote against independence that it doesn’t blacken his character.

He just believed it was necessary to have a Constitution and a formal government before declaring it, and in a way he was proven right that it wasn't the wisest course of action considering the weaknesses of Congress to guide the war effort, but the war and the political pressure to vote for independence was too much.
It's hard to blame anyone for being reluctant to sign off on what was effectively a declaration of war against a leading global empire. There really was no precedence for such an action, nor much realistic hope of defeating the British to secure independence by force of arms at that point in time. They were looking at overthrowing British rule (who had the world's greatest Navy and huge, experienced land armies), with poorly trained and equipped militia forces led by a commander (Washington), who up until that time had a rather poor record as a commander. Hard to blame Dickinson or any other leader for being less that sure about committing to a full scale revolution when the odds seemed... long.
That look of mutual respect and understanding between Adams and Dickinson gets me every time. Even though they had wildly different outlooks on the future and different opinions on what course Congress should take to achieve them, they still had great respect and admiration for each other’s work and determination to save America.
The original document says “inalienable” but John Adams was on the committee to have it printed. It was suggested he advised the printer to use unalienable as he was convinced it was the correct spelling.

Everytime the Declaration of Independence is read aloud, It reaffirms my belief that this is the greatest document ever written. I hope that the youth of today read this and understand that even with the political divisions and social problems that at our core, we are and have always been a Great Nation.
The youth of today have been infected and brainwashed by teachers with deep seated hatred for America. I have many immigrant friends who view these young Americans as spoiled brats who don’t realize how special our freedom is and how blessed we are to be Americans.
You do forget that it ignored slavery…it was written in the early drafts but the southern slave states wanted it removed lest they “remain loyal to the crown”. Because there was a LARGE group of founders who wanted to end slavery immediately, the constitution of 1787 (our current one) addressed it, too. The majority of delegates wanted to end slavery, but the powerful southern slaveholders nearly ended the union by walking out and seceding then and there. The compromise was to table the debate until 1808. When that time came around, secession once again loomed, but the compromise was to end importation of slavery while allowing the institution to remain for the time being. Abolition was on the minds of Americans long before it came, and it was a small minority that made it hold out. From the declaration to the constitution, the slaveholders were a minority that exercised power over their neighbors by threats of non-cooperation. That hardly makes the document supportive of slavery, or overturns the value of it.

Within a year Washington would lose the majority of the Continental Army trying to defend New York...Philadelphia would be under direct threat. Congress would flee into Central Pennsylvania. Major enemy forces would be moving against Upper New York, and the south would be wracked with civil war brutality. Final victory would not be for seven long years...and thousands would die. It's a momentous occasion, for sure...but not triumphant. Not yet.

An excellent question, contrary to popular belief, most soldiers could not afford the blue dyed coats that officers wore. Since most of the Continental Army had no "real" funding, the soldiers didn't have a set uniform. Just come as you are sort of situation. The brown and red you see here I believe is the 6th Pennsylvania regiment. If the officer in charge of a regiment was wealthy he could supply uniforms if he wished.

England is truly the greatest country and Kingdom on earth who have given birth to this machine The United States of America together with her siblings New Zealand, Canada and Australia. As a norwegian i salute England for all her Glory and it is hers language the world speaks to eachother.
I honor England and John Locke for giving us the foundations of our free society. England gave us our civilized culture. The break was necessary and I’m so thankful for those that spilled their blood so that I can be a free American today. And of course I feel a lot of affection for England from which my ancestors came. I have 3 ancestors who fought in the American revolution (1died). They were German immigrants. The British side of my family wouldn’t immigrate to America for another 60 years!

...after all, none of these men knew if what they were attempting would even be possible...but by this point the die was cast and they were committed to seeing it to the end.
We look back now on a successful rebellion and think this is a triumphant moment...far from it. Within a year Washington would lose the majority of the Continental Army trying to defend New York...Philadelphia would be under direct threat. Congress would flee into Central Pennsylvania. Major enemy forces would be moving against Upper New York, and the south would be wracked with civil war brutality.
Final victory would not be for seven long years...and thousands would die.
It's a momentous occasion, for sure...but not triumphant. Not yet.
2026 will be the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the birth of the United States.

An excellent question, contrary to popular belief, most soldiers could not afford the blue dyed coats that officers wore. Since most of the Continental Army had no "real" funding, the soldiers didn't have a set uniform. Just come as you are sort of situation. The brown and red you see here I believe is the 6th Pennsylvania regiment. If the officer in charge of a regiment was wealthy he could supply uniforms if he wished.
