@@Berserkism I think the reason for that is 11900k use monolith desing (the heat load is more spread) , 5950x use ciplet desing ( the heat load is concentrated in a small area), so heatsink can't transfer heat fast enough from 5950x
@@Physis_88 chiplets aren't that much of a problem, heat density is as die size is significantly smaller (14nm Vs 7nm, 276mm² vs 161mm² for CCDs on 5950x)

I'm really happy to find yet another option to lessen the noise on a PC system. I love that some in-depth explanation was given in regards to each component. I'm glad the gentleman talked about how the glass side panel was just for show, and that the aluminum side panel is best. Science!
I just started ordering components for my new passive PC, and it actually hadn't even occurred to me to look at TH-cam. I decided to go with an Intel Core i5-12600T CPU (35-74 W TDP) and the Noctua NH-P1 cooler, and those will go on a Gigabyte Z690 UD AX DDR5 (big heatsinks), powered by a Seasonic PX-500 fanless power supply. I intend to use the integrated Intel UHD 770 GPU, and a Thermaltake Core P3 open case. This will be a pretty massive upgrade for me, considering the last PC I bought was a 2013 model Dell Inspiron laptop with a Haswell Celeron. Even the fastest machine I currently have in the house, which belongs to the company for whom I work, is a 2017 MacBook Pro with a Core i5-7267U CPU (too old to run Windows 11) with a Passmark score of 3933 CPU, 1575 GPU (Intel Iris Plus 650). That compares with 18202 CPU, 2599 GPU for the new system, and that's before even considering the increases in motherboard chipset speed, memory speed, and SSD speed that the new system will have.

Its quite easy to make a quiet "passive" pc nowdays.... Get big ass passive cooler, get ssd instead of hdd and you cant afford GPU so BOOM. Job well done... kinda.

I’ve bought one, can’t wait for it to arrive after seeing this video! I’m currently running a NH-D15S but although that’s an excellent cooler, it has a pretty closed off fin stack so it needs an active fan on it to move the air. With the NH-P1 I hope the case fans that are right overhead will be sufficient and thus make my system even more quiet than it already is.
@@greatwavefan397 I ran the NH-D15S fanless with different configurations (orientations/case fans), but the fin stack is just too dense to effectively draw the air out just using case fans. I've since tested with the NH-P1 and that makes a huge difference, it works really well with just case fans. It's an excellent, quiet solution if you keep the CPU power consumption at sane levels.
I feel like Matt from DIYPerks could have narrated this video... This is SO pleasing to see, alas my processor can't run fanless according to the compatibility list, anyway what an amazing product. Maybe undervolting/limiting the base clock could work without too much performances impact... What a great new toy :D
when building a truly silent pc, another thing to keep in mind would be the small fans on x570 motherboards, as well as on some others. Considering that, when making a silent pc, the cooler is passive, thus, a B550 board will work just as well as an x570 as it's highly likely the CPU will not be overclocked. VRMs are generally decent on those boards, too.
If someone is considering going 100% fanless also consider coil-whine. In my experience a little fan noise is much more pleasant than coil-whine, which you will hear from the graphics card or PSU if there's no fan to cover it. So that's also something to keep in mind when chosing a fanless PSU.

Well done product introduction. Clear, detailed enough with good points on addressing thermal performance limits. The fan add on option is great but I'd like to see these fans produced in the black/grey color option that Noctua recently introduced last year.
Semi passive is the way to go! Full passive is great and all when it works, expensive when it isn't. Semi passive has all the advantages of full passive, minus the risks. I first found out about semi passive cooling in the mid 2,000s after pulling a passively cooled videocard out of a machine and burning my hand in the process 🤣 Within an hour, it had a small 12v fan screwed directly into the heatsink...
Except when you can't tolerate any noise at all. For me, I'm setting up a home studio DAW. Any noise at the wrong moment might ruin a take, so it has to be fully fanless. (edit: typo)
@@AnWe79 you can also have the pc in another room and have long cables. But ye, in the end audio recording are a niche of a niche market. Noctua was hyping this as a game changer but it's far from it, just a gimmick
@@grasthube Yep, my use case is a one room guest cabin that will double as a studio, so the other "room" would have to be either the toilet, a cabinet, or outside. None of those seem tempting TBH.
@@AnWe79 yeah that's a fair call, in that situation then yeah you would only want fans to come on when absolutely necessary. Example, if a CPU is good for 90c according to the manufacturer and with given cooling being ample for keeping things 60-70c in most situations, I'd set the fans to come on at about 30% at 80c, but only to protect the equipment from overheating and potentially causing a loss of work.
I thought this video was fascinating, even though I am not really sure I would go for a passive PC myself. Using a Noctua NH-D15 with two fans at full speed to run an 11700K at 5GHz all-core is such a nice performance boost, and they're not even loud fans really. I mean, you can even see in the video how much the performance picks up when he adds just one fan. I like seeing how much can be done with passive cooling and how powerful it really is, but at the end of the day when a few fans can drop temperatures that much... it's hard to say no to that. Especially if you have an air conditioner or something running in the background, you won't even hear the fans. I guess it would be a bigger deal for people who are doing music production or something where noise could interefere.
Nicely Done. Hopefully one day I can find the components that work as well passively, as when active, and afford them as well of course. So I can make an almost silent sleek build like this.
Great video! So much passion went into it, it's palpable. Just like your products. I have 2 questions that I'm wondering a lot about these builds: 1) mount the fun to push air into the case, or mount it to pull it outwards - which one is better? 2) for pulling air outwards, would you rather place it on the CPU cooler, or, if close to the CPU cooler, attached to the case? I understand your answers can't be generalized to all configurations, but I'm sure that e.g. for the particular case above, you have benchmarked it, and I'd love to know!
Thank you for your kind feedback! If you add a fan, we would recommend adding it either as a top exhaust case fan or sitting on the cooler blowing towards. The effect will be very similar, but the top exhaust case fan position has the advantage that it doesn't reduce natural convection through the cooler, which can cost a few Watt.
Sure...you pay a premium price for Noctua coolers, are you getting your monies worth with your investment? As a Noctua customer I can say a solid YES. I've had my NH-D14 for quite some time, it's graced such CPUs as a i7 950, a i7 7700K, a Ryzen 9 3900X and a Ryzen 9 5950X...yes they supplied the AM4 kit for the D14 but the cooler and even the bracket kit were packaged beautifully and contained excellent instructions. I also own a NH-U14S for a secondary system with the above mentioned 3900X. So here we have Noctua's new passive cooler, a stout piece of metal designed to work without a fan, sure they can push the hard sell but no...the give us a soft spoken gentleman explaining what this new cooler will do and what it'll work with. No massive overdone hype but a classy informative video and links to supporting documentation to go with the new cooler. This is the quality from a company that you pay a little extra for when it comes to the products. It's things like this that will make the decision to buy Noctua real easy in the future...and yes I sense more of their products in my house soon.

I have a question, if using this cooler with the Gigabyte B550M AORUS Pro-P AM4 Micro-ATX Motherboard, would I be able to install the NH-P1 rotated 90 degrees, aligning the fins as front-to-back of the case, in order to maximize the effectiveness of the airflow from the front case intake fans and rear case outtake fan? Loved this build, too bad there are no high end fanless GPUs such as 3080/6800xt. Although, my current GPU has a fanless mode when idle, but when in high use it releases too much heat, so it will make a passive build impossible. I think with this cooler, Noctua becomes the default option when doing a passive build.
Just to save someone some time going through the case list, Thermaltake, SilentiumPC, Phanteks, Lian LI, Jonsbo, Fractal Design, Cougar, Corsair and Cooler Master were the only ones with viable cases for passive cooling. Within that list, Thermaltake, Lian Li, Jonsbo, Cougar, Corsair and Cooler Master were the only ones with cases that received the highest score of three stars.
I can think of a usecase in a industrial environment where a plasma cutter is producing huge amounts of dust that gets everywhere, means every fan will push possibly conductive dust into the case. Is it okay if the top side is closed and only front and back have a vent mesh when using a fully passive system? Btw. His voice is marvelous and perfectly resembles what I expect of the noctua brand. Never let him go.
Yes, the side panel can be closed but preferably the vents should be at the bottom and at the top of the case for best natural convection. Hi. Thanks a lot to Noctua for all PC case tests for passive builds in the provided link. Would you, at Noctua, recommend a different PC case selection for all people that will never put discrete cards inside, but just use APU only ? I don't think that the bottom space would be crucial in this case. Do you agree ? I'm very interested for a full passive APU only build (APU with NH-P1, passive PSU, nvme heatsink). What PC cases would you recommend for that configuration, and would some Mini ITX cases do the job with 65W APU, please ? Thanks. Regards.
We would recommend the same cases as bottom to top airflow is the key point. For ITX, please take a look at the Lian Li O11 Mini. It works very well with the "low motherboard" setting: ncc.noctua.at/coolers/NH-P1-68/cases/Lian%20Li?q=mini
just wondering, would vertically mounting the gpu would improve thermals for both the cpu and gpu since the gpu's heatsink is allowed to cool and the pcb isnt blocking natural convection for both the cpu and gpu?
I think using a PCIe extension cable and connecting the GPU to the x16 slot is a good idea. That way you can mount it away from the CPU heatsink and still use the fast PCIe slot.
This is neat but I think passive GPU cooling is much more useful since that's where the majority of the noise is going to come from in a gaming PC, or any PC that makes noise. There's really no good reason for passive CPU or case cooling as you can just use very quiet fans at a low enough speed that they end up silent.
Any news on the chromax A12x25? Will it be released this summer? I don't want to be forced to buy the thermaltake toughfan 12 just because of the color :D

@Noctua_at excuse me, did you test any "compatible" processors at max working temperature for reasonable amount of time (close to guarantied by manufacturer lifetime) in passive build?
On a serious note, this passive cooler is a beast. Love to have it and hoping it will be available internationally. Please make a revised NH-D15 with shorter height less than 165mm.
Awesome video, impressive cooler. I would consider myself using a passive CPU cooler if it wasn't for the fact that my hard drives make more noise than the rest of the PC... I guess I could always go with some SSDs ... maybe when I overhaul the media center PC I'll go for an APU with a passive solution in a mini-ITX case (fully vented of course) For the sake of completeness one thing that was skipped on the video was coil whine from certain components, if you are building a passive PC consider the noise from the inductors, usually good quality PSUs and good GPU power delivery designs don't suffer from it, but be on the lookout for it as it is way more noticeable and annoying if it is the only source of noise...
Do you know if the people designing fans at Noctua have any plans (or even concepts) for fans larger than 200mm, or any plans for more 200mm models? I'm not a professional yet, but i'm getting an engineering degree currently, and it really seems like larger fans, such as 200×200×60mm, have much better throughput-to-noise-ratio than smaller fans. It now occurred to me that whoever at Noctua reads this probably can't reveal any information about upcoming designs.... Well, whatever the situation may be, bring up the idea with product designers if you have any power to do so.
We don't have plans for fans larger than 200mm at this stage as there aren't any PC cases that could fit even larger fans. From a technical perspective, it is correct that larger sizes make it possible to achieve better airflow to noise ratios, but maintaining good pressure performance and even blade loading is a big challenge the larger you go.

I think the most interesting choice would be the Ryzen 5950X with the 65W ECO mode enabled. Fully passive 16-core CPU...

Could you perhaps place the cooler parallel to the airflow so air can flow between the fins?

I thought this video was fascinating, even though I am not really sure I would go for a passive PC myself. Using a Noctua NH-D15 with two fans at full speed to run an 11700K at 5GHz all-core is such a nice performance boost, and they're not even loud fans really. I mean, you can even see in the video how much the performance picks up when he adds just one fan. I like seeing how much can be done with passive cooling and how powerful it really is, but at the end of the day when a few fans can drop temperatures that much... it's hard to say no to that. Especially if you have an air conditioner or something running in the background, you won't even hear the fans. I guess it would be a bigger deal for people who are doing music production or something where noise could interefere.

Nicely Done. Hopefully one day I can find the components that work as well passively, as when active, and afford them as well of course. So I can make an almost silent sleek build like this.

I have 2 questions that I'm wondering a lot about these builds:
1) mount the fun to push air into the case, or mount it to pull it outwards - which one is better?
2) for pulling air outwards, would you rather place it on the CPU cooler, or, if close to the CPU cooler, attached to the case?
I understand your answers can't be generalized to all configurations, but I'm sure that e.g. for the particular case above, you have benchmarked it, and I'd love to know!
Thank you for your kind feedback! If you add a fan, we would recommend adding it either as a top exhaust case fan or sitting on the cooler blowing towards. The effect will be very similar, but the top exhaust case fan position has the advantage that it doesn't reduce natural convection through the cooler, which can cost a few Watt.
@@NoctuaVideos I've heard it's ideal to avoid negative pressure in builds like this to prevent dust from entering via unfiltered areas.

Sure...you pay a premium price for Noctua coolers, are you getting your monies worth with your investment? As a Noctua customer I can say a solid YES. I've had my NH-D14 for quite some time, it's graced such CPUs as a i7 950, a i7 7700K, a Ryzen 9 3900X and a Ryzen 9 5950X...yes they supplied the AM4 kit for the D14 but the cooler and even the bracket kit were packaged beautifully and contained excellent instructions. I also own a NH-U14S for a secondary system with the above mentioned 3900X.
So here we have Noctua's new passive cooler, a stout piece of metal designed to work without a fan, sure they can push the hard sell but no...the give us a soft spoken gentleman explaining what this new cooler will do and what it'll work with. No massive overdone hype but a classy informative video and links to supporting documentation to go with the new cooler. This is the quality from a company that you pay a little extra for when it comes to the products. It's things like this that will make the decision to buy Noctua real easy in the future...and yes I sense more of their products in my house soon.

Loved this build, too bad there are no high end fanless GPUs such as 3080/6800xt. Although, my current GPU has a fanless mode when idle, but when in high use it releases too much heat, so it will make a passive build impossible. I think with this cooler, Noctua becomes the default option when doing a passive build.

Just to save someone some time going through the case list, Thermaltake, SilentiumPC, Phanteks, Lian LI, Jonsbo, Fractal Design, Cougar, Corsair and Cooler Master were the only ones with viable cases for passive cooling.
Within that list, Thermaltake, Lian Li, Jonsbo, Cougar, Corsair and Cooler Master were the only ones with cases that received the highest score of three stars.

I can think of a usecase in a industrial environment where a plasma cutter is producing huge amounts of dust that gets everywhere, means every fan will push possibly conductive dust into the case. Is it okay if the top side is closed and only front and back have a vent mesh when using a fully passive system?

I think using a PCIe extension cable and connecting the GPU to the x16 slot is a good idea. That way you can mount it away from the CPU heatsink and still use the fast PCIe slot.
This is neat but I think passive GPU cooling is much more useful since that's where the majority of the noise is going to come from in a gaming PC, or any PC that makes noise. There's really no good reason for passive CPU or case cooling as you can just use very quiet fans at a low enough speed that they end up silent.
Any news on the chromax A12x25? Will it be released this summer? I don't want to be forced to buy the thermaltake toughfan 12 just because of the color :D

I would consider myself using a passive CPU cooler if it wasn't for the fact that my hard drives make more noise than the rest of the PC... I guess I could always go with some SSDs ... maybe when I overhaul the media center PC I'll go for an APU with a passive solution in a mini-ITX case (fully vented of course)
For the sake of completeness one thing that was skipped on the video was coil whine from certain components, if you are building a passive PC consider the noise from the inductors, usually good quality PSUs and good GPU power delivery designs don't suffer from it, but be on the lookout for it as it is way more noticeable and annoying if it is the only source of noise...
Do you know if the people designing fans at Noctua have any plans (or even concepts) for fans larger than 200mm, or any plans for more 200mm models? I'm not a professional yet, but i'm getting an engineering degree currently, and it really seems like larger fans, such as 200×200×60mm, have much better throughput-to-noise-ratio than smaller fans.
It now occurred to me that whoever at Noctua reads this probably can't reveal any information about upcoming designs....
Well, whatever the situation may be, bring up the idea with product designers if you have any power to do so.
We don't have plans for fans larger than 200mm at this stage as there aren't any PC cases that could fit even larger fans. From a technical perspective, it is correct that larger sizes make it possible to achieve better airflow to noise ratios, but maintaining good pressure performance and even blade loading is a big challenge the larger you go.
I think passive PC's should be the future. Also solving coil whine, my ears are so sensitive i hate it!
