Been playing this on Switch online, I love it! The game changed when I discovered I could lock my direction and strafe, and the SOUNDTRACK! He didn't even mention it, but the soundtrack is worth playing the game alone, even just look it up on youtube and give it a quick listen.

It's on there now. I've played a little so far. It is typical of Jaleco games. Pretty average, not great, but not bad either. Of course having save states and the rewind feature make the game much easier.

This was on sale cheap from a rental store and I got it for like $5. When I was a kid it took me several tries to beat this game. You eventually keep going further and further before dying until you finally reach the end in a playthrough. Once you do that then the game definitely feels short. The intro about your cyborg soldier was neat, and I still remember the story. Scientists were playing with those teleporter pads and celebrating when the aliens start leaking through and making our world look like theirs one piece at a time. The old "we opened a gate we can't close and got invaded" trope like Doom and other games used.

@@Horse_bastard I was a fool and didn't keep my cartridges when the NES and SNES both eventually stopped working. The slot where the cartridges would go into wore out on the NES, the SNES stopped booting, and back then I didn't know how to fix things. Now I kick myself for selling all those games......

The slower pace and the importance of using level geometry makes this seem almost like a very early third person shooter rather than a run&gun action game.

On a Jaleco kick, I see. Love it. You know, it's funny. I rememeber seeing this box as a kid at Blockbuster and the name threw me off. I thought it was a more strategic RTS sim or something, not a run and gun game. I never rented and regret it now. I always liked Jaleco games and should have given this one an honest try.

I had this game as a kid. Completed it several times.
The last level was gorgeous and the music very catchy, so it was a shame that the level was so short compared to the rest. I remember playing the game just to reach that level and chill there for a while.
    Good times.

Wow. I’m in my 30’s and I thought I saw all the SNES games already until I started collecting games again and realized there’s wayyyyyy more games out there than I thought. This title isn’t a cheap one for sure but a damn good game! Hopefully I’ll muster up the courage and cash to grab a copy in the near future but for now I’m just collecting games I had lost from childhood. It’s been one hell of a journey. Started off with some SFC Dragon Ball Z games and eventually began opening up to just titles I never had or was aware of.

This is a pretty good game, I am guessing the people in the comments trashing on it have never tried it much. I has some great controls and the game play and visuals are solid. I think it could have done much better if they released it as a sequel to Fortified Zone, instead of the obscure name and bad box art.

  • @ArcaneAzmadi
    @ArcaneAzmadi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Oh man, I remember Fortified Zone. One of the first games I think I ever played (it'd be in the first 20 games of my life at least, as it was one of the first Gameboy games I ever played, and the Gameboy was my first console). Borrowed it from a friend and I remember I beat it. The main things I remember were the swapping between the two characters, a particularly annoying end boss, the ending cutscene of the woman helping the man limp away from the exploding enemy base, and a few snatches of some rather distinctive music from one of the later levels.

I remember I played through this game when I saw a ROM for it somewhere and was fascinated by the bizarre name.
I enjoyed it, but it's one of those games where *right* as I feel I got a hang of it, it's over. I think a sequel could have really improved it, because there is definite potential in it.

They should've made XYBA decide the direction of the gun (a la Smash TV) rather than have BOTH walking and firing controlled by the directional pad.
In the footage, I can seem him often having to walking in circles just to realign the firing direction again.

Ikari No Yousai is the name of the Japanese version. Very playable and only cost 5-10 bucks vs 25-35 for the US version.

It lasts about an hour or two, you quickly catch on to the gameplay, and the only major hurdles are a couple bosses at the end which are unrelentingly brutal. Besides that, it's a neat little top down shooter, worth a playthrough.

Saw this game at a convention next to Firepower 2000, indeed had no idea what kind of game it would be. Kind of thought it would be an abstract puzzle game.
Think I'm going to track a copy down. Love the spritework, and aesthetic. A really ahead of its time concept for a scifi shooter.

Looks very reminiscent of the Alien Breed games on the Amiga. If you like the slower, more deliberate style, consider Jaleco's later SNES title The Ignition Factor. It's more dry and sim-like than The Firemen, but still worth a go.

Nice, I just got this game recently but haven't played it much yet. I think it feels like Super C's overhead stages but a lot more methodical, this isn't really a run n gun like the usual ones. Those "cut-scenes" are interesting, kind of like todays audio logs but... visual logs? Anyway seems worth playing some more anyway. Oh and the back of the japanese box calls it a "super famicom upgrade to the originals" so I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a sequel or a remake or what.

A bit more work on this title and it could have been really great imo: Increase the player speed just a little and slow down the enemy fire a tad. Let the player move and shoot in 8 directions independently using the 4 face button just like in Smash TV, and use the shoulder buttons to change weapons and use the items, or something like that. Make that big black circle when some of the bigger enemies appear use a more interesting effect that really makes it seem like they're coming through a portal or something. A bit more variety in the level designs. And sorted.
