THANK GOD you review this phone! I wanted you to review the p20 pro display calibration because yesterday I was on notebookcheck dot com and read the display review and they said it's on par as the iPhone x display calibration or a little better. Great timing on this upload Erica!
Having the finger print sensor on the front is a better way in my opinion. I don't have to bring up the phone to unlock when it is resting on the table in order to read incoming notifications.
I find it ok having the finger print sensor on the front with P20. I guess it is up to individual preferences. However, for myself I will prefer conveniences over cosmetic looks. Also, we still have no idea how good on-glass finger print sensor are at the moment. If users can accept the weird looking notches on top of the screens nowadays, I don't see why they cannot put up with the finger print sensor on the front. Just my 2 cents.
Mun Chee Hong I understand what you’re saying, but most people are using more real estate as the number 1 reason for having the notch. If that’s the case, then why have the notch in this phone because your losing real estate with the chin? Just a thought.
As much as I wish to agree with you, but having the notch is actually losing the actual real screen estate imho. For example, P20 Pro has a screen size of 6.1" diagonally - that's 155 x 73.9 x 7.8 mm (6.10 x 2.91 x 0.31 in) according to GSMArena. However, within the 6.1", only the left and right side of the notch are used for displaying status symbols. If my understanding is correct, you will "lose" the left and right areas when viewing movies, gaming, etc in full screen, unless you prefer to have the movie or game clipped by the notch area. So, in the end do we actually still have a full 6.1" of usable area? That's something to consider. However, we are not losing any real estate with physical finger print senor at the chin area because that area is never considered as part of the displaying screen estate in the first place.
Since i have it i can tell that there is an update missing on your device. With the update the night mode would be one of the first modes and not under "more". Go to system update and search after the complete package. I also can tell that the camera does that oversharpening thingy sometimes. Thats why i shoot only in 40MP without AI. Pictures come out very natural and not sharpened. Please test this :)
I disagree. I love the idea of having the fingerprint reader at the front. I have the S8 + and I really want to unlock my phone without lifting it off my work desk, and nope I dont use the face unlock mechanisms due to eye damage scares listed on the web. Yeah I fancy this P20 plus phone.
Shoot I don't know. I might save up and get this bad boy off eBay around the end of the year or something. Plus that huge 4000mAh battery too? Yes please.
Catherine Adams Note 9’s battery runs down WAY quicker through the battery as it isn’t optimized as well as the P20 Pro, if you don’t believe me look at battery comparisons..........
@@liquidmist81 I got the P20 Pro and I'm soooo happy with it. Not very common but the battery... Holy moly. A battery has never lasted me 1 whole day. Ever. Now. I usually have 30 percent or something still, after the whole night and I use Bluetooth 24/7 (smart watch and headphones when studying or at work)
I don't understand why unboxings are so popular, especially with phones. The content in the box is near identical even across brands, so there isn't even a surprise waiting. It is the fingerprint sensor on the front that is attracting me to the P20 Pro. My phone sits on my desk and I like to be able to unlock it without picking it up or hunching over it for face unlock.
I am lazy when I am at my desk at home. I am on my feet and constantly moving while I am at work., I have no interest in doing more than I need to at when I am home. If I can get as great phone without having to mess about, the why not?
voteDC I'm on my feet 8-12 hours a day at work, and still have the strength to pick up my phone when I'm at home, so there's no excuse to pick up a device that is not even close to weighing 1lbs.
It is definitely an amazing phone for any android user out there, Huawei products have made leaps and bounds in terms of their quality in the last few years.
Kudos to you Erica for reviewing this phenomenal device. I’m loving this phone, especially the handheld night mode! Look forward to seeing your full review!
I would love to know the following in your full review: 1. Does EMUI skin affect the performance when it comes to RAM management and overall use of the device 2. What situations when doing nighttime photography does it excel, and when does it not do so? 3. How accurate is the screen when it comes to colour reproduction, accuracy, and vibrancy? Looking forward to the full review
Im currently looking into upgrading right now. I might wait on your full review for the P20 as it is in my list of phones to look at it. Would love to know more about how it handles being in the states network wise.
Hey Erica , I wonder when r u going to make in depth review for the p20pro? it is already 2 months since this unboxing video I hope u will make it soon
I’m loving this phone. Was thinking of importing it but I’m hesitant to because imported phones for the most part tend to not play well with the cellular bands from the US. I’m curious to hear your experience on this.
I find setting the colour profile to standard gives the photos a flatter/neutral look that many north americans prefer. But it is nice to be able to choose between that and vibrancy that's added automatically without having to spend the time in post-processing.
Just love the way how you review the display because bad display really is a deal breaker for me too. I subscribed your channel because these display reviews.
I've never used a Huawei phone but when I was in Japan last year my friend who lives there had one. I'm not sure what model it was but it was huge compared to the s7 Edge I was using at the time. It was gold colored if that means anything. It looked like a pretty nice phone if you don't mind one the size of a small tablet.
The example about the shadow clipping with a stat of sorts (6: 34) shows the Huawei does do more detail up to further into the dark, but the way the Samsung's shows what IS visible is a thousand times superior! Also, Erica might not like a fp scanner below the screen on the front, but most people dislike it when it's at the back.
I'd be very interested in a bit of a broader battery test - how does it hold up with more intense (high brightness, bluetooth & GPS turned on all day, stuff like that) vs more conservative use (low brightness, maybe only WiFi and data permanently on, maybe with battery saver enabled?). That comparison is one I always find myself wanting but never actually seeing in reviews!
Bought my P20 pro yesterday after 3 years of intensively using the P8. Huawei has bren making amazing phones, my P8 works as the first day i bought it and i expect nothing less from the P20 Pro.
try some really long exposure shots with a tripod, I want to see results for that, from what I've seen so far no other phone can touch it on camera if it is utilized properly, I'd say Pixel 2 is the closest experience in picture quality
Is the over sharpening and color correction happen in the RAW files or is it just in Jpeg mode? If it over corrects RAW you can just unovercorrect (not a real word) in Photoshop or whatever photo manipulation software makes you happy.
Apparently there is some pretty aggressive "beautifying" happening even if you disable it in settings. How do you find the portraits look? Does shooting in manual work around this?
been watching your phone reviews over any other i really love that you get into detail about things that others dont and i am not from the US some of your audience is from europe too! haha still undecided between this and the one OnePlus 6 x.x
No ear phone Jack or SD card slot? 128gb is plenty tbh thou, hmmm 🤔 I'm using Huawei P9 so I was thinking of upgrading to P20 as I love the Huawei brand since getting the P9, but after this I may hang fire. Looking forward to hearing more of your thoughts with it
Nice review... I think that the US is trying to control the market, like they did with the Xperia's fingerprint sensor before... Speaking of which, you're so late to XZ2... When are you going to review it, Erica?
The IR blaster is what sold me on this phone, you know how convenient it is to not have to find your tv remote everytime you sit down or your teachers projector conveniently shutting down randomly during school presentation?
Did they fix 4k stabilization? I am thinking to pick it up bcs my s7 edge is just turned 2 years haha What do you think overall so far? s9+ for me in my country is 200 dollars more than this and i think this camera is better a lot.

Ooohhh with the Sprint Tmobile merger possibly in the works, I would love to be able to get this device a couple months down the line. I love the camera but I won't switch carriers for it (I'm on Sprint right now). Glad to hear you're getting good speeds on their LTE bands.
Great review! I prefer the fingerprint sensor on the front as it means I don't have to pick it up to use it when it's on a desk and the areas beside the fingerprint reader allow you to pick the phone up without touching the screen

Some things about the display of this phone REALLY surprised me! No black crush aka shadow clipping!
Erica Griffin Erica where can i ordrr one im in new york USA. 😂 The phone looks awesome!
Erica Griffin Glad to hear that, I'm getting tired of the black crush on my Pixel 2XL. Can't wait to see your full display test!

I am using the UK version...
Erica Griffin Maybe try the app firmware finder.
Its called the CLT L29 8.1.0.107 C432
It got shipped with the 104 i think.
CLT-L09 has no updates yet, unfortunately. I know because I have one. However, version 110 is coming soon apparently. We are currenlty on 103.

Stupid updates. 😐
This video is 4K. It might take time to process...
Erica Griffin much like
I love your work...keep going
Erica Griffin: You should get the lg g7
I will

You always have unique findings! That's what distinguish you from the rest of TH-cam
agree on that, didn't found anything so far about the black clipping so far, something that would bother me if I bought a samsung.

Love how you go deep in the specks in the phone, I’m like that too when I’m purchasing a phone! It helps a lot of people too!
Best unboxing/review. You are the only one mentioning the notification led which is important for some people.
I've found the sound from USB C to wired headphones really bad, when headphones perform brilliantly on other 3.5MM jack phones...can you investigate?
Love your reviews! Always so informative, and I like that you compare it to the s9+, as that's what I am using now. Thank you
