Good to see people still use stainless stick on pipe. When I first went to work for Celanese America’s in 1976 we tested on 6” sch 40 316 pipe all the way out with Arcalloy 316-15. Many years of 100 percent stick on stainless. Once you learned how running the root was a piece of cake. As you probably figured out I’m getting up in age. Thank you for showing people stick stainless is still viable. Good job on the video.

Avesta makes really good welding rod (green coating ) ,way less spatter , we typically go 3/16 right off the hot pass ,never fail a ferrite test either . If you are getting porosity on your starts just ark the rod out for two or three seconds to heat the moisture out of the rod .

Used to weld with stainless rod a lot in 1980s it was some of the smoother operating rod I used.
Make nice pretty little golden welds.
Watch your eyes, the slag cools and
    ' pops' right off. ( I do mean ' pop ' )
Remember welding something heavy with stainless rod that ended up in my yard for years in the dirt. The steel was all corroded and rusty but the weld was still pretty and shiny.

Might seem like a dumb question but I'm a newbie and trying to learn, what kind of "cross-contamination" is he talking about with the grinder? Does this actually matter?

    • @johnlane8152
      @johnlane8152 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

He means contamination of regular carbon steel, or worse rusted carbon steel.
See stainless, on its own is basically rust proof due to the nickel and chrome in it, however you CAN "seed" rust in stainless if it gets scratched by a piece of steel that already has rust on it. That's why your supposed to use only stainless wire brushes and fresh new grinding discs etc only used for stainless.
If you get into stainless get a seperate kit with all your stainless only gear and keep it clean and away from regular welding stuff. That can include a new and seperate angle grinder that you will not use on regular stuff etc.
Many people also keep a seperate kit for aluminum only etc.

Today I’m doing a combo weld exam. Sched 80, 2 inch stainless steel
    Root & fill with Tig
    Cap with 3/32 stainless stick
    6G
This is by far the hardest exam in my pipe welding course
On top of that, it’s 107° F, record breaking heat for where I’m living
    (Quebec, Canada. 32° C, feels like 42°C (( 89.6°F, feels like 107.6° F))
    62% humidity
I’m gonna go sweat my balls off
I’ll post and update to say if I passed my bend test
    Update: I passed! :)

What do you mean--"It can get in front of you"? Use a common term and not vernacular.
