Loved this song from the first time i heard it years ago. It was not a rational decision, as i didnt realise any of the lyrics, except 1891 and something about forest and stones. its just has a beautiful vibe of harmony and uniqueness, and its holds the test of time
Certainly evocative of a time that never was, yet was, that we never knew ,yet is all too familiar. Like walking in an old cemetery and reading every tombstone.
Roscoe by Midlake. Faultless harmony singing with a hyper catchy track. The ambiguity and detached nature of the lyrics tell a story that you don't care about but want to listen to and follow through to the end anyhow. It's the wierd attraction of the uneeded that makes this a stunner. The chord structure is nothing new, but it is of the formulas that piques our emotions and is almost addictive. On or around 122-124 bpm. I love this track, it is as smooth as velvet and eminently listenable
Excellent point man! I love the way their songs all have that...for want of a better word..."oaky" feel to them. Really rural and natural. Organic music.
I've been googling and thought maybe they represent Trappist monks, but then is there significance to their carrying lanterns in the daytime and the couple seeming scared of them?
@jmeditation Me too. I've got 90% of that now. ....just can't convince my friends to let go of their miserable city lives. The keep telling me their big breaks is "6 months away". Its always 6 months away. Years go by, and some of the start resenting my happiness. I spose its a city attitude. I'd be happy if someone I knew was doing well. I spose marketting can convince just about anyone that living in an expensive concrete shoebox with dirty water, and dirty air is the best.
[LYRICS] Stone cutters made them from stones Chosen specially for you and I Who will live inside The mountaineers gathered timber Piled high In which to take along Driving many miles, knowing they'd get here When they got here, all exhausted On the roof leaks they got started And now when the rain comes We can be thankful Ooh ah ooh When the mountaineers Saw that everything fit They were glad and so they took off Thought we were due for A change or two Around this place When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with The village used to be all one really needs Now it's filled with hundreds and hundreds of Chemicals that mostly surround you You wish to flee but it's not like you So listen to me, listen to me Oh, and when the morning comes We will step outside We will not find another man in sight We like the newness, the newness of all That has grown in our garden soaking for so long Whenever I was a child I wondered what if my name Had changed into something more productive like Roscoe Been born in 1891 Waiting with my Aunt Roseline Thought we were due for A change or two Around this place When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with 1891 They roamed around and foraged They made their house from cedars They made their house from stones Oh, they're a little like you, and They're a little like me We have all we need Thought we were due for A change or two Around this place This place This place When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
This is an extraordinarily good song. I just hope that when it gets a wider acclaim they can afford a video with a strong narrative, good cinematography and skillful editing. This video is a fine effort, but simply doesn't match the greatness of the song.
@JoeyRiducci770 that is stupid. there aren't a lot of bands that exist that haven't gotten stoned at some point. do you think there are any popular bands that have never gotten stoned? what do you listen to?
direction was definitely too literal for my taste. i feel as if I'm witnessing an elaborate game of house. absolutely spectacular track from a favorite contemporary american band. i just don't know if I can say the same for this
@RaelWander Yes! I make a playlist of my favourite albums from Midlake and Fleet Foxes and play them on shuffle. They mix very well, I think. Such beautiful harmonies from well blended voices. 🎼🎵🎶🎵🇬🇧
Saw these guys at Latitude - defo one of my highlights - for some reason, I find this particular track addictive; It's like molasses, and i wanna be called Roscoe
Découvert sur Google Video, je trouve ce groupe vraiment sympa Effectivement cela ressemble à Fleetwood Mac mais qui s'en plaindrait ?...pa snos oreilles en tout cas
What's AS good as Midlake? Difficult to say, but if you like their sound, try the music of Badly Drawn Boy, especially the album One Plus One Equals One. Give it a go. Kind regards!
@jmeditation My friend Jim Benham and his wife, Anne did just that. In Ireland. He built an amazing house. I don't think I could hack the lifestyle though. Oh nice post thanksworldsfair
i concur..valient effort on the filmakers part, but these songs have such an esoteric, mythic quality, the videos need to be less "literal'. 16mm-lens flare-costumes- you know? maybe no promotional films at all would suit this special album best.
There aren't many bands that write songs as good as this anymore. I think if you like this song then you would probably like a song that is very similar to this - It is called .... On & On and is by The Fossil Collective. Oh, and the video is a LOT better ...... PEACE OUT
Certainly sounds idyllic, doesn't it? Playing devil's advocate, I have to say it wouldn't be so good from the point of view of not having electricity, sanitation, or medicine. But still.. quality over quantity applies to life, too.. right? :) I like the way you think.
An ideal life, unfortunately at the moment the closest I can get to nature in my life is living without social networking... that's natural enough for me @davidfendick , the other song was nice but for the videos, how can you compare some puppets to some people wandering forests and fields..? they're just different?
Excellent point man! I love the way their songs all have that...for want of a better word..."oaky" feel to them. Really rural and natural. Organic music.
One of the most beautiful songs ever composed.
I'm serious.
I guess you've never heard of Insane Clown Posse. 😂
Loved this song from the first time i heard it years ago. It was not a rational decision, as i didnt realise any of the lyrics, except 1891 and something about forest and stones. its just has a beautiful vibe of harmony and uniqueness, and its holds the test of time
Just revisited this one. Been on repeat all week of course
I was obsessed with this song in 2006. Like it was my mood for that whole year, and it feels like centuries ago. Time is weird.

Still remember the effect on me when I bought it.
So much beauty in a song !
Certainly evocative of a time that never was, yet was, that we never knew ,yet is all too familiar.
Like walking in an old cemetery and reading every tombstone.
Love the atypical structure of the vocal line - that loping, almost stumbling delivery
Roscoe by Midlake.

Still one of my favorite songs ever
Maddeningly addictive 😍 Definition of a propulsive beat 💓
One of my favorite songs ever
Easily one of the greatest songs of all time.
Still a masterpiece.
a substantial depth to this piece of art
This is brilliant. In fact the whole album is just brilliant. Such wonderful voices. and the music....... float away
One of the most underrated bands ever. F...U Pitchfork
I love this song. The harmonies are perfect.
Haha "Agricore", spot on mate! Thought I'd be alone in getting a rural, agricultural vibe off their music!
one of the most compelling songs i've heard in years. BEAUTIFUL, with such evocative lyrics
Wow this is almost exactly what I visualised when I listened to the song...serious goosebumps!!
Everyone on Earth should buy this album. If you dont like it, I will fight you. That's no lie.
Obra de arte
I can really feel the atmosphere of this video!
The song is great!
Midlake is great!
Perfect song??? Yes 👍
Essa musica tocou minha alma !!!
I start EVERY day with this.
THis is my favorite song at the moment its genius and if you dont like it the your just dumb and dont appreciate great music
Love this song. Love this band.
That video looks like it was filmed in England. I thought they was Texicans...
Excellent point man! I love the way their songs all have that...for want of a better word..."oaky" feel to them. Really rural and natural. Organic music.
Ou, love Midlake! Great art symbiose of video and audio of all their clips!
My real name is Roscoe but I never thought it was cool... I'd already been using a new name for too long when I first heard this song..
Another one of my favorites by them!
So good song!!!
omg! why didn't I know about themm yet... it's exactly the kind of music I was been looking for ^_^
its so soothing
I can't come up with one thing that suck about this song. Simply perfect, almost kind of low key voice and then just perfect harmony!
What do the people in white robes mean? Are they visual foreshadowing for the album art of "The Courage of Others?"
I've been googling and thought maybe they represent Trappist monks, but then is there significance to their carrying lanterns in the daytime and the couple seeming scared of them?
I don't know what or who this is but I like it!

[LYRICS]
Stone cutters made them from stones
Chosen specially for you and I
Who will live inside
The mountaineers gathered timber
Piled high
In which to take along
Driving many miles, knowing they'd get here
When they got here, all exhausted
On the roof leaks they got started
And now when the rain comes
We can be thankful
Ooh ah ooh
When the mountaineers
Saw that everything fit
They were glad and so they took off
Thought we were due for
A change or two
Around this place
When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
The village used to be all one really needs
Now it's filled with hundreds and hundreds of
Chemicals that mostly surround you
You wish to flee but it's not like you
So listen to me, listen to me
Oh, and when the morning comes
We will step outside
We will not find another man in sight
We like the newness, the newness of all
That has grown in our garden soaking for so long
Whenever I was a child I wondered what if my name
Had changed into something more productive like Roscoe
Been born in 1891
Waiting with my Aunt Roseline
Thought we were due for
A change or two
Around this place
When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
1891
They roamed around and foraged
They made their house from cedars
They made their house from stones
Oh, they're a little like you, and
They're a little like me
We have all we need
Thought we were due for
A change or two
Around this place
This place
This place
When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
When they get back they're all mixed up with no one to stay with
Reminds me of a video out of the 80s. Great song; I just wish I like its video more.
where is this filmed? it looks alot like the English countryside...
@davidfendick thank you a lot for On and on. I love it.
this video is so pretty. i wonder where they filmed it.
Great song!
They had a nice idea for the v-clip but it was that good..
the modernity of the sound and the antiquity of the subject matter make for great contrast.
such a great melody line and rhythm section.
1891!
Damn 15 years !!!
wow. well said
This is an extraordinarily good song. I just hope that when it gets a wider acclaim they can afford a video with a strong narrative, good cinematography and skillful editing. This video is a fine effort, but simply doesn't match the greatness of the song.
Bonita cancion...
@JoeyRiducci770 that is stupid. there aren't a lot of bands that exist that haven't gotten stoned at some point. do you think there are any popular bands that have never gotten stoned? what do you listen to?
love this song.
Eisley should do a cover to this!
:D
direction was definitely too literal for my taste. i feel as if I'm witnessing an elaborate game of house. absolutely spectacular track from a favorite contemporary american band. i just don't know if I can say the same for this
@phish
Or try the song Mykonos by Fleet Foxes. Same ancient vibe, more or less, just a bit darker
@RaelWander
Yes! I make a playlist of my favourite albums from Midlake and Fleet Foxes and play them on shuffle. They mix very well, I think. Such beautiful harmonies from well blended voices.
🎼🎵🎶🎵🇬🇧
That's a good thing. Where's the cowbell?
Yes, "Head Home" by Midlake LOL.
OH MY GOD!~~~~ I SAID THAT THE OTHER DAY!!! i soooo agree!!!
Think it is this one
Saw these guys at Latitude - defo one of my highlights - for some reason, I find this particular track addictive; It's like molasses, and i wanna be called Roscoe
how about Songs Ohia ??
Aw, I like the literalness of the video. Nothing else would suit it. Anyway, this is a fantastic song. It makes me swoon like a schoolgirl.
Now this really is Fleetwood Mac. I'm liking it.
Fleetwood Mac wish they sounded this good.
Découvert sur Google Video, je trouve ce groupe vraiment sympa
Effectivement cela ressemble à Fleetwood Mac mais qui s'en plaindrait ?...pa snos oreilles en tout cas
I'm sure you meant to say Hour of Bewilderbeast... ;)
i can really fel as if im gonna c all dis
What's AS good as Midlake? Difficult to say, but if you like their sound, try the music of Badly Drawn Boy, especially the album One Plus One Equals One. Give it a go.
Kind regards!
we are not like these, we are like some... I hope for this: a fusion of all this meanings, 'cause I don't believe, I just hope for...
This version is so magical and full of emotions. In compare with Ellie's version - Midlake wins!
@JoeyRiducci770 oh...i just looked at your profile and found out. some guy that has a squire and plays blues really badly.
Never a truer word.
@jmeditation My friend Jim Benham and his wife, Anne did just that. In Ireland. He built an amazing house. I don't think I could hack the lifestyle though.
Oh nice post thanksworldsfair
i can totally hear fleetwood mac influences
i concur..valient effort on the filmakers part, but these songs have such an esoteric, mythic quality, the videos need to be less "literal'. 16mm-lens flare-costumes- you know? maybe no promotional films at all would suit this special album best.
1:41 The Santa Compaña?? in North Spain's folklore, it means that somebody will die
There aren't many bands that write songs as good as this anymore.
I think if you like this song then you would probably like a song that is very similar to this - It is called .... On & On and is by The Fossil Collective.
Oh, and the video is a LOT better ...... PEACE OUT
My kingdom for a time-portal, indeed. Aah well, youtube will have to do. *sigh*
The Mars Volta songs, like:
Cassandra gemini
Tetragrammton
Asilos magdalena
or The Doves songs
sounds alot like don't fear the reaper by the blue oyster cult
Hoi Carice.
Fleetwood Mac? I was thinking more like Bread or Badfinger. Or maybe even Nick Lowe.
Certainly sounds idyllic, doesn't it? Playing devil's advocate, I have to say it wouldn't be so good from the point of view of not having electricity, sanitation, or medicine. But still.. quality over quantity applies to life, too.. right? :) I like the way you think.
wish the video was as good as the song though
An ideal life, unfortunately at the moment the closest I can get to nature in my life is living without social networking... that's natural enough for me
@davidfendick , the other song was nice but for the videos, how can you compare some puppets to some people wandering forests and fields..? they're just different?
I suspect them of being Role-Playing geeks
"not that there is anything wrong with that"
thumbs up if silas music video let you here!
Anyone up for forming a cult we,ll call it 1891 and live like they do in this video, turn our back on modern life
