Oh yes it was! That is why the Brexiters were such hypicrites for claiming otherwise. For years we have looked west for solutions to our problems, to the vastly different USAa continent with plenty of space and awash with natural resourcesnot a small wet, green island , rather than towards the European continent where those problems likely had already been solved by nations much more like the UK. Our railways are the best example but the road building programme of the 1960s is another. Thank goodness the 1945 Labour government kept to British solutions to health and welfare and gave us the NHS and the Welfare State. De Gaulle was right about the UK and by the way, burocracy is everywhere also in GB. Real democracy does not exist, it is impossible. Once in 5 years the people can decide what "rough" direction the country is going (liberal, conservative, confessional, green, labour etc). Just after the election, MPs themselves decide what is good for the people and the country (Brexit is a nice exemple of this). When election approaches, MPs pick up again the sense of the people in order to stay (survive) in power. This is not a bad thing, it is a fact of life like death and taxes so grow up reflecting upon the existence of real democracy. Who is reading party programmes? 0,01% of the population? How good the British public is informed on the pro's and con's of the EU? Even less!!Do not forget, all western states are olygarchies and this can not be avoided or do you want to have 68 million MPs? . In the Netherlands politics is about compromising (poldering) , it is accepted that you can not always have what you want. However, this is possibly "a state of mind" the British do not embrace given the actual situation in the House of Parliament and the possition of the Scots and others in the Union?
I read all this comments about the UK and immigration we control our immigration quite easily compared to Germany France and other euro countries because we are an island the euro countries take much more immigration. Immigration happens dwal with it stop using it as a tool to leave it has nothing to do with brexit.

No, East Germany was part of the Warsaw Pact, was part of the USSR's sphere of influence, and it was a Communist country. Likewise, people would sometimes say "Russia" when they were really referring to the USSR / Soviet Union

@Zoltán Tóth 1) So you're saying there are methods by which assets can simply survive being effected by Brexit. Great news, eh? 2) Don't be so silly as to take politicized propaganda as intel. It's no different than when the US claimed Iraq had WMDs. dont be a sponge-head. Russia plays games like any nation, but they aren't so involved as to be a primary factor in any of this. 3) Even were Russia simply aiming to cleave apart the EU; Russia would be a superior ally compared to weak Brussels
I guess that makes you ignorant and ill educated too because what he said is exactly the reason I voted brexit and I know so many people did for the same reason.
Brexit is a good idea but after the disaster and chaos in the British Parliament, we all know Britain cannot survive a Brexit. And I even do not mention here the problems with NI! But today the EU does not want that Britain join the EU because of this chaos and of this disaster Brexit is like poison for the EU - and this cannot destroy the UK but maybe the whole EU!😉
Few UK politicians propaganda of taking back the control doesn't clearly reflected the aftermath of brexit situation of UK. It would go bad for UK more than EU. Also this indeed increased of split within the union where Scotland who were in favor of stay would surely seek for independence post brexit, Northern Ireland want to be closer to Ireland then brexit mandate. what would happen if others in union (favor of stay in EU) would opt out of union and apply for EU membership. Clearly UK politicians have themselves to blame for not foreseeing these scenarios. While many of us (even me) predicted other members might follow UK and opt of EU in initial stage, I would say now with all this happening in UK, even Italy might have Second thoughts and would really opt to stay in EU.

Brexit will be disastrous to the UK but for a short wile . if the people of Britain their fact well then Britain will be great . Eu comprises of many countries and mark my words very soon disagreements will arise which will be detrimental to that union.
As usual, politicians talk out of the side of their mouths. They tell the citizens one thing, then do as they please. From what I gathered, the citizens have been unhappy for a long time with the EU. The influx of migrants further exacerbated the dissatisfaction. When Brussels basically tell the citizens whats going to happen in their country without their input - guess british pride and need for self rule belatedly raised its head. I have to admit this is a little like either the quest by Napoleon to rule Europe or that by Hitler to rule the world. The only difference is no guns and with consent of the politicians. But you can see the quest for centralized power in one place while the other politicians act like yes lackies. What happened to the working for the good of each countries citizens. Brussels might as well have the members say hi hi hitler. Hitler would invade and bomb, Brussels will sanctioned the uncooperative member to death because the citizens don't want to whistle their country down the drain on some narcissistic, egomaniacs power hungry dreams. I often wonder how politicians can sign their countries' future away, how can they sleep at night or look in the mirror at themselves; but as long as it does not directly affect them, they can live with anything I am an American and see the same disregard of the politicians for the citizens here as well. The only person who sees what is really happening is the everyday citizen who has to work hard to put food on the table and pay the bills. THERE HAS TO BE A SPECIAL PLACE IN HELL FOR POLITICIANS WHERE THEY PAY FOR THE HELL THEY HAVE KNOWINGLY/INDIFFERENLY CAUSED OTHERS.

"We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain only to see them re-imposed at a European level, with a European superstate exercising a new dominance from Brussels." Margaret Thatcher, 1988 If you want the real reason for Brexit, there it is. In a nutshell, rolling back the state means that the government's role is restricted to the bare essentials: defence of the realm and controlling the money supply through manipulating the interest rates to curb inflation without resorting to negotiating with unions about wage policies. Anything else is to be left to individuals to make their own choices and take responsibility for their own lives. And that includes healthcare. It's only taken 40 years to do it. For example Britain should not be taking parts in Global conflicts mostly because it is a waste of resources and soldiers. With Muslims Britain made many enemies now if you were neutral concerning Middle East and you did not allow Muslim immigrants different story . Well let me ask you this when has an European Citizen ever blown himself to pieces killing and harming multiple victims.Islam is bad because they will never assimilate to your culture the same is with Jews. Now let us inspect the British and Eu citizens most of them are all born and raised Christians. Most Europeans are White, Christian, and completely compatible with your culture. So there isn't any Marxism done only minor cultural differences tis all.I however understand Britain Marxism is evil and it is used to destroy a nation and their identity.
The vast majority of EU migrants who come to the U.K are low skilled workers which don’t contribute to the economy This leads to wages being stagnant because the jobs market is saturated with extra workers, house prices rising and a massive strain on our public services.
Charles de Gaulle was right. The UK has history of never being able to finish anything and pulling out. Still haven't got metrication done.

Because people were getting increasingly annoyed at being told what to do by Brussels. EU, has allowed poorer Eastern European countries to join the EU and undercut wages.
So... you are criticising the EU for telling countries what to do and, at the same time, for allowing them to do things? Maybe... just _maybe,_ politicians in those countries are using the EU as an a excuse to undercut wages (while asking the EU for funds they don't deserve).
no, Charles de Gaulle didn't believe Britain was European
He was... Well, he treated all 'Anglos' (mainly the UK and the US) the same and hated them both. At least he wasn't quite right on this one. Actually FDR was pretty much playing with Churchill in a lot of terms, especially when FDR was a hardline against colonialism while Churchill (and frankly de Gaulle too) treasure their colonial empires very much. Not to mention even after the WW2 the UK and the US still have a lot of differences, and even conflicts in interests.
Holy hell you actually got the flag of Estonia upside down :D
Job well done.
The Brexit came from ignorance. Instead of blaming our politicians for the sorry state of this country, the sheep decided to blame EU!
3:55 UKIP wasn’t anti-European it was anti EU ...
Both loathed by the Tory party which has looked to the US for economic inspiration since the 1980s
Where did Brexit come from?
Simple person : from Europe
Nobody can answer this simple question. It seems to have been a massive distraction from real domestic problems. I would guess the scandals of 2012-2015 connected to child abuse.

0:36 - Was East Germany also in the EEC?
No, East Germany was part of the Warsaw Pact, was part of the USSR's sphere of influence, and it was a Communist country. In those decades, sometimes people would just say "Germany" when they really were referring to West Germany. Likewise, people would sometimes say "Russia" when they were really referring to the USSR / Soviet Union
Greatly explained
The reason Brexit happened was due to political integration. Being governed outside your nation is not acceptable or appealing.
@Zoltán Tóth Here's another example of automatically conflating opposition to popular opinion to ties with Russia. I suggest you read EU legislation. The Maastricht and Lisbon treaties should clear things up.
2022: "....and this cannot destroy the UK" didn't age well did it?

It’s going to be a lot more than 16% if these moronic MPs we have in parliament botch up brexit

Still haven't left the EU.
It came when the plens discovered they were ruled by foreigners. A sort of foreign Raj.
From Putin.
I often wonder how politicians can sign their countries' future away, how can they sleep at night or look in the mirror at themselves; but as long as it does not directly affect them, they can live with anything
I am an American and see the same disregard of the politicians for the citizens here as well.

"We have not successfully rolled back the frontiers of the state in Britain only to see them re-imposed at a European level, with a European superstate exercising a new dominance from Brussels."
Margaret Thatcher, 1988
If you want the real reason for Brexit, there it is.
And they are succeeding.
