D2 allows 28 teams and FCS allows 24 teams to play in their playoffs. I think $ talks which is why it took so long for FBS to get to a playoff in the first place.
This is how you create parity, by letting them compete. You think programs like Gonzaga, Butler or even Duke back in the day just were born overnight? No, they took their knocks but got exposure (not exposed). They had blowout losses, but got new recruits and came back better each decade.
From 2014-2023, 12 of 18 “first round” or semi final games in 4 team playoff were 3+ score margins. Non competitive games. So anybody crying about mismatches after EXPANDING to 12 teams, doesn’t know ball or just started watching this year.

Get rid of the committee and take out the human bias. Use the old BCS computer model to rank the teams and seed 1 - 12. Get rid of the auto bids and auto seeding.
I agree with everything you said EXCEPT I want to keep the autobids. Top 5 conference champs are guaranteed in. If 2 or 3 conference champs are ranked outside of the top 12, they can push the 10-12th ranked teams out. They don’t get to complain. The GO5 teams deserve a shot to prove why they do or don’t belong over a decade or so before the format is changed. One year isn’t enough. They shouldn’t get guaranteed byes though. I’d even be fine with expanding the field to 16 and getting rid of byes entirely and guaranteeing that every single team that goes 8-0 or 9-0 in conference AND wins their conference title game is guaranteed in. On years when there werent 9 undefeated-in-conference conference champs, it gives more spots to the Alabamas, South Carolinas, Ole Misses, and Miamis. Yes, I’m fine with seeing blowouts. We got to see some great atmospheres on TV in December. That part was awesome.
