My mom and I were avid chart watchers at the time (I was 10) and we both loved this song and considered it only a matter of time for it to hit no.1. It really should have hit the top - a great song from one of my favourite artists.
I think it spent 4 weeks at number 2 behind the Bee Gees song Tragedy and I will survive by Gloria Gaynor 2 of the other best pop songs ever made so mabey in a different life it dose make number 1
Fantastic song! One of the best songs ever written! He should always play it! A piece of music thst has given millions of people joy. He himself is underrated as a song writer and performer an absolute legend! The awesome Elvis Costello! ❤❤❤❤❤
Sends chills. While finishing my MA at King’s College London, I would play it and envision my graduation. Tragically, my sweet mom died shortly before I finished my thesis. I nevertheless persevered, graduating with Merit.
What a great performance. Love the flags and just the feeling of the whole thing. What an event!! Wish I had been there. The passion, the history, the collective atmosphere of everyone gathered together. The British costumes LOL. The lyrics, so powerful. What a huge crowd - must have been awesome to be there.
Steve Nieve still a genius on the piano. One of the best songs, thank you so much for this upload! One of the best songs, thank you so much for this upload!
Just saw "EC" recently at the Stiefel theater in St. Louis (aka Kiel Opera house). Balls to the walls performance until the mysterious and ritualistic malfunction of the PA. What made this concert famous is, the protagonist of this caper, Elvis Costello, continued to rock the house at less amplification but more gusto than ever. Can't wait for Elvis to return to St. Louis.
Yes..Elvis cows down to the PC virtue signallers..who clearly dont get the irony or context of his brilliant lyrics and assume because he used the N word, albeit about white people, that they have unmasked a terrible racist ..shame on them for being so illiterate and not reading the irony
@@cliveedwards2958 He didn't "cows down" he chose not to sing that line. Himself. I saw a few years ago in Edinburgh and he chose not to sing it. His choice.
Although it was wrote about the northern irish situation, it also applies to the army in general and how poor people are recruited and sent to foreign wars and invasions, and the hell that that involves.
@John Smith The British Army like the American Army, is an all volunteer force. We all signed up and knew what we were signing up for. Anyone who says they never knew there was a possibility of going to war and getting shot at is a liar or an idiot.
The British Army are all volunteers, no ones makes them join up , the White Nigger line probably offends you as well , listen to any rap song and that word is used plenty... Double standards as ever .
@You are correct But They've always had plenty of people like you telling the other side of the story. I've been there, I've lived it. I stand by what I said.
Brilliant song. When it first came out I lived in a German town in the British sector with a large military presence. The military radio station BFBS banned this song. Guess why...
an oxymoron is a contradiction in terms. what the commenter actually said was "[IT] takes balls to say the N word..." nowhere in the comment does it imply that HE has the "balls" to say it. one could even conclude that by not using the N word he actually strengthens the compliment to Elvis Costello.
I am not sure it is age or breath. The drummer is driving it too fast, and he is pointedly annunciating and delaying, hoping the drummer gets the hint and slows down.... but he never does :-(
I had the chance to buy it in France when it was released, and there was also an EP inside with 3 live titles : Accidents will happen, Alison and Watching the detectives, all become standards. And a set of postcards with Attractions photographs.
One of the greatest songs ever written..played too fast here I felt..Elvis struggled to keep up..don’t hate me. Been a fan for 30 years and I’ve seen him and the Attractions play this song live many times..this one was a bit messy in comparison..just saying..long live Elvis .so happy to hear his recovery from his health issues..genius
Curiously, I think every video I can find of him doing this live, even back in his young days, the drummer always sounds like he is rushing it and pushing Costello along, which is infuriating. It's like he drives it just a little too fast for Costello to get the words in.
YES YES!... Costello is singing it right and trying hold it back a little so it has groove and finesse, and the drummer is bash-boom-bang pushing too fast. I have been on that side of things in a band. It is MADDENING when the drummer isn't listening to the singer and doesn't pull back.
1 of the best songs ever written. Should always play it no matter what.
he didn't play it when i saw him a few years ago 😔😔
Indisputably one of the greatest pop songs ever written and a travesty that it never got to No. 1.
My mom and I were avid chart watchers at the time (I was 10) and we both loved this song and considered it only a matter of time for it to hit no.1. It really should have hit the top - a great song from one of my favourite artists.
I wouldn’t say indisputably.
Come on somebody dispute it I’ll watch!
He's written some beautiful songs, but NONE better than this one!!!
I think it spent 4 weeks at number 2 behind the Bee Gees song Tragedy and I will survive by Gloria Gaynor 2 of the other best pop songs ever made so mabey in a different life it dose make number 1

Never stop playing this song x

Well done to you, good luck for the future.
He looks great and is a fearless poet. Bless the dude.
Every record he makes is worth thousands of plays, so interesting and each a different gem of music.
What a great performance. Love the flags and just the feeling of the whole thing. What an event!! Wish I had been there. What a beautifully composed piece of music. Genius...any way it's performed.
Steve Nieve still a genius on the piano.

Wow Costello's still got it. Amazing considering he's older 61 there.
Elvis and Sir Paul are the two greatest songwriters who ever lived.

I absolutely love this song. Still sounds so fresh. Thank you for uploading.
I've grown up listening to this song in my dad's van, and I love it so much. It brings back so many happy memories :)
That's just it..the song has a great vibe and you will remember it your whole life
God Blessed us with Elvis Costello!

First single I bought and I love digging the old Stiff Records 7 inch out for a blast , absolutely brilliant!
One of my favourite performances from this year, thought he was brilliant throughout.
Although it was wrote about the northern irish situation, it also applies to the army in general and how poor people are recruited and sent to foreign wars and invasions, and the hell that that involves.

Very good song!, awesome! Great Elvis Costello.
I did “ across the barricades” for English 0 level, it was about the troubles in Northern Ireland. This song lends itself to that cause. Brilliant
Pete Thomas still banging those drums!
Loved it. Put a big big smile on my face watching this x
Nice to see the Leeds United flag in the crowd! Super Leeds!

My fave from a teen in Scotland
Elvis nailed it here.
Brilliant song. When it first came out I lived in a German town in the British sector with a large military presence. The military radio station BFBS banned this song. Guess why...

Ray Charles meets Thatcher!
Class..great post
i love this song
Such a good singer. To start with.
legend
I bet this would have been cool to hear in a tiny little club in New York during the prime of my life.
Amazing
Elvis C is the best ever - fuck I love his music!
Elvis, aka,Declan, nailed it with this one.
There was a Brazilian band, named RAIMUNDOS, who made one of the best covers of this music.
WOW !
Excelente!
what a great song we like it so much we had to do a version on uke
just awesome......
Love
"ABBA sound" from the piano.
It was literally based on Dancing Queen
The keyboardist from the attractions said it was the main inspiration
very cool
pure quality
great song.. still kills
Pianist adds his own twist to it but without ruining the original.
Overlooked
Steve Nieve still a genius on the piano.
Baked Potato t shirt!! Awesome! Great jazz club in LA :)
2:15 damn!
Nice to see the Leeds United flag in the crowd! Super Leeds!
Bounce swfc going down Haha
Hats of to mr Costello. takes some balls to still say the N word in this day and age, regardless of context. good lad. don't sell out
Kianu Collis Take it easy old son!
takes some balls to say "the N word" seems like an oxymoron.

The theme tune to my first year at senior school.
2:15 Paris Hilton is an EC fan?
He said it.
Brazilian band called "Raimundos" made a cover of this song in 1997.
My son teaches one of his pupils at Avis costello’s place as was on his piano he wrote that on
Good performance--but he was struggling for breath. How old is he now?
+Philip Croft he's 61, great performance for that age!
I am not sure it is age or breath. The drummer is driving it too fast, and he is pointedly annunciating and delaying, hoping the drummer gets the hint and slows down.... but he never does :-(
If you like this, listen to the rest of the album it's from, ("Armed Forces") it's a classic.
I had the chance to buy it in France when it was released, and there was also an EP inside with 3 live titles : Accidents will happen, Alison and Watching the detectives, all become standards. And a set of postcards with Attractions photographs.
Elvis still alive ! ! !
A versão dos Raimundos que me fez conhecer a versão original do Costelo. 😅.... Isso há anos atrás... adolescente ainda...
The piano and keyboard by Steve Nieve in this is fucking brilliant
The look on the faces of the crowd is priceless - they were born 20 years too late...
Awesome crowd of English people 👍
And I would rather be anywhere else than here today
Steve Nieve, 'nuff said!!!

I agree ☝️
Aren't they The 'Imposters' without Bruce? LOL

2:16 Don't say I didn't do anything for ya'.
Estou aqui só por causa que a banda Raimundos gravou essa música em 1997 no álbum Lapadas do Povo
Thanks, I am just learning this song, you can just about see the chords.
Is the 94 or 2013?

Ray Charles meets Thatcher!
What did he say he didn't he did
Steve Nieve on top form . And I was in the crowd that Saturday
No more of this song.
Really, in a world where stuff is at it should. He should be f**king headlining.
One of the best songs ever but I thought this was count Arthur strong!
The Oliver in question was Cromwell.Declan McManus here trashing the whole British colonial adventure. Some man.
He hated doing this. He's said that he's never coming back to UK as the audience are no longer connected to him.
This concert was in the UK. Where does he live now ?
