    Thumbs up for putting it to use.

      Arkadiusz, what I find so amazing and... elegant about ray-tracing is that the depth of field is simulated in a physically plausible way across all engines, and it works really similar to the real-world photography indeed. This universality across media is just inspiring. :)

      Not sure about the actual physics of the swirling bokeh (I think the specific look of Helios 44-2 is the result of the error in the manufacturing process), but It's uncanny how the effect made with a simple cutout in Blender resembles the real vintage lenses. At least to my eye.

  • @dekonstrukcija
    @dekonstrukcija ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a great and simple solution. I personally use photographers addon for custom bokeh when I need this kind of an aesthetics, but the price you are paying with that is much longer render times. Can you tell us what are the render times with this technique applied, compared without the bokeh plane? Does this add more to the render times?

  • @owenjenkinsofficial
    @owenjenkinsofficial ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you could easily mitigate the Bokeh and Aperature issue with a driver from the camera aperature driving the bokeh shape scale. My assumption is that would solve the issues. Plus if some experimentation found that distance from the camera origin positively affected the bokeh fringe and quality, you could link the same aperature driver to the local z axiz of the bokeh shape plane! I haven't tested this, but it seemes like it would in my head! I might try it. If I do, I can post how I did it.

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea, Owen, I think the driver affecting the bokeh object scale would work (not sure about animating it though, but probably would work as well?). Linking it to the distance from the camera (z axis) - also an interesting thought. Please share your results if you test this!

  • @CharlieKnottFilms

    The techniques used here in Blender are similar to the way a DoP will shim cutout filters with custom shapes near the rear/mount of the lens. The same effect can be done on set, in-camera with a mattebox filter. Going even deeper with this concept conceptually, netting is often used in the back of a lens to act as negative fill through the optics, condensing the light based on the material density of the fabric. It would be fascinating to see what you could pull off in Blender for a similar effect, or even to try and replicate lens diffusion (i.e., Black Promist, Tiffen Black Diffusion, etc.)

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "netting is often used in the back of a lens to act as negative fill through the optics, condensing the light based on the material density of the fabric" - oh that sounds interesting, I've never heard about it. Would you mind pointing me out in this direction by sharing a link perhaps?
      p.s. As for imitating the Black Promist filter etc in Blender, I think Jack Toth came closest to it, with his anamorphic lens simulations (which also includes the 'naturally' occurring lens flares and so on): www.youtube.com/@JackToth

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  ปีที่แล้ว

      Rombout, what do you mean by the light guide? I don't think I got it :)
      Generally the way I make it brighter after adding the bokeh cutout is by amplifying the white point in the color ramp node following the bokeh texture (to 5, 8, whatever).

    Gleb please how to match live action lighting ....best gift ever you can give us.....

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      O, that's a question for a dissertation :D Or for a series of videos. Matching the live action lighting boils down to a few things:
      * Matching the lighting via capturing a spherical hdri on location (for example. that's just one possible technique)
      * Matching the rgb color primaries of the live footage & Blender rendering (via a color checker, X-Rite ColorChecker Passport or other)
      * Matching the white balance (temperature and tint) across the media
      * Make the 3d geometry cast shadows onto the live footage (via shadow catchers and other tricks)
      * Make sure you converted the live action footage to a linear scene-referred .exr first (so all matching is happening in the scene-referred 32-bit space so to speak. That's the part that is hardest to wrap your head around, but it's the most fruitful as well)
      These 5 things are probably most important when matching live action with 3d. :)

    I thought the way you got the swirl was interesting, but shouldn't it effect the outer edges, not the centre?

    • @GlebAlexandrov
      @GlebAlexandrov  ปีที่แล้ว

      The warping effect is (or should be) more pronounced near the edges, you're right. That being said, depending on the 'amount' of the warping, the effect could be quite pronounced near the central portion of the image too. In other words, it's a feature, not a bug, at least as I see it.
