I think you're currently my favorite TH-cam channel. interesting old tech stuff, dankpods style but with more chill vibes, that glorious australian accent, plus beautiful synthwave (edit: and Minecraft OST!) playing the whole time? perfection.
Thank you for this video! Very glad you posted it although we all had to witness the moment of death. I just got a powerbook 190cs in just about the same condition. A little less battery leakage, but pretty much the same situation with the hinges and trackpad. Without this video I doubt I had been able to open it at all. Now it's in a hundred parts all over my desk. Considering doing the same fix as you; supergluing the heck out of it. There's no way I can get these plastic pieces together. It's far too fragile.
@@frokfrdk yo hi frokfrdk! I have an idea for a video - make some abomination of a foldable Lumia (although you would need 3 of the same model) and make it run Windows 11
The PowerBook 190 has the distinction of being the last grayscale Macintosh ever sold by Apple. And the last 68040 processor machine! Thanks for the video.
I can't find the post, but someone on reddit loaded OS X on to one of these [obviously with a few modification] and after a few seconds it completely bricked itself
I honestly had the same thing happen. I took a 190, 190CS screen, and what was left of a 5300 to create a working unit. It does work and it does have an SSD, but the display is having some issues where half the screen it’s glitched out.
Yeah i have 2 old perl laptops with a similar issue with the hinges. 1 has already been damaged so I'm kind of scared to open the second one and as I can't find any documentation on them
The Power supply mightve been just providing low voltage due to bad caps on the charger, I had a problem where a iBook G4 connected to a 12v charger would just randomly throw the fan to full speed and the HDD running and no chime, tried using another custom charger and it worked (24v) TLDR: A robust charger is required to run the Powerbook directly via the wall

These things really are a challenge especially the fact that they'll essentially just shatter on you

Ni-MH batteries generally don't explode. They leak like crazy as you can tell.
absolute banger of a video mr. frokfrdk
Nice job I love it! Keep it up love to see you a again

The clicking coming from the machine is likely a dead hard drive. If you replace the HDD it might work again.
You are right about that the battery is not easy to get now days all you have to do it’s a cool display of a old laptop to have around your house

also you can dip the motherboard in isopropyl alcohol and scrub it with a (clean) toothbrush
It might be the lack of the battery causing it to not work
There's no way the original battery worked anyway, the pins were all corroded together
These do not need a battery
Inside part of battery mattered sensors and stuff

is it just me or this laptop is looking kinda T.H.I.C.C
nice
I know it's super late, VINEGAR, vinegar can nullify exploded battery acid and clean it
I've used vinegar to clean corrosion in the past.

repairing this powerbook needed hp tools --super glue
Those were 18650 so you could rebuild the battery
