Pros of a paper suit: • way cheaper • might be more comfy for people with sensory/medical issues (normal suits can feel so suffocating sometimes...) • easier to make for some! (Sewing is hard) Cons: • probably can't be repaired as flawlessly as sewing up a seam... but it's $20 vs $2,000 so
They're cool from a papercraft perspective, but the thing that makes me not ever want them myself is the threat of something one can put so much work into being easily destroyed beyond reasonable repair by something as easy as mushing it a little bit/being wet/degrading over time easier than something made of fabric. They're way too delicate for my taste personally, even if they can look sick

My honest opinion on paper fursuits. They are another means of expressing creativity. Something that is at the very core of the furry fandom. As long as the person making/wearing them isn't putting themselves at risk I see no issue. I made a bead base out of cardboard before I made my own head. That was more just experimenting with a cheap material before using foam and stuff but still. From that experience I learned a lot. All for creativity and expression. Enjoy your time and have fun.

He didn’t show it but in the tutorial they use clear tape stuck to itself and markers to make the eyes so you can still see through them! I imagine they look a lot like looking through coloured sunglasses
paper fursuits are actually interesting imo, to me it seems like somewhat big origami with tape or something. Personally I think the biggest problem with them might be low durability in general? It might depend on how they're made but in general I don't trust paper as strong material. I think it could be somewhat secured a bit though to be more durable.
I made a paper fursuit and I will tell you, I worked *hard* and yes, it took me a couple days. However it came out amazing and I’m really happy with the results. I would definitely recommend making a paper fursuit if you’re on a budget or just want to!

I think paper fursuits a great way for people to get creative on the cheap! I almost kinda made a paper fursuit last year. I created a paper mache mask of my fursona. But because I was afraid of mold and it getting destroyed, I made a mold of it to make a liquid plastic copy. It wasn't the best quality cause it was my first time working with the materials, but it was an interesting learning experience. Look up Eric Strother for an example of doing mask using a similar technique I used. But much higher quality! Most of his mask are still cheaper than the average fursuit head from a high quality maker. Last I checked.
I personally make cardboard for suits in order to test and draft EVA foam patterns for the final product. I make my own patterns, and at times trusting the accuracy of a clay model is not enough. Thus, when I make an Eva foam pattern for a fursuit head, I print it out at full size and test the pattern with cardboard. It allows me to recognize any errors or problems with the pattern and reconfigure it. It is time consuming, but it works exceptionally well for someone like me who uses EVA foam bases over traditional, upholstery foam. It allows me to get idea of what it will look like before committing to the project.

Something I learned from my time working as a mascot performer is if you don't want to/can't wear a balaklava, you can put on a wig cap! Just stuff all your hair inside, and you can clip it down if need be. Also helps to keep the bangs out of your face while in suit!

I have DID and my ENTIRE SYSTEM is furry or furry adjacent i have been DYING trying to wrap my head around what to do and how to do something but you just brought up *PAPER CRAFTS!!!!* I’ve done TONS I’m actually working on an alters book right now taking all of their portraits and bringing them together into one tiny junior binder (if you know anything about junior binders you know I am making most of the items I need to use it. Paper crafts are relatively inexpensive (especially when you have TONS of colored card stock) and for my purposes all I need is for my sisters (alters) to feel less dysphoric! ❤❤❤❤ i have been wondering about making elaborate paper designs because I didn’t think there were tutorials or a Groups I could ask for help if I got stuck but knowing there is a whole community makes me so happy Recently a new sister joined our family and her name is Mousie… her NOSE is her biggest dysphoria so this is such a HUGE help you have no idea ❤
I made some cardboard stuff before and I used glue made for wood, mixed with water. I'd soak pieces of paper in the mixture and placed them all over to support the shape and make the thing more sturdy. It turns out this method creates not only a waterproof surface but it also becomes as hard as plastic. I can totally see paper fursuits being a thing, why not! Tape, foil, glue - plenty of ways to make it last
5:10 I reckon its also really good if you're not somewhere where its easily accessible! I live in NZ and boy howdy is it basically impossible to get decent quality faux fur, or even any foam apart from EVA sheets here without buying it from AUS.
There's a chance paper can get mold yes, but as long as you take care of them, they can last awhile. I have a paper skull mask, that I've had for 4/5ish years now.

I made a paper fursuit head of my dragon fursona a few months ago as well an (almost finished) paper tail, they turned out unexpectedly good for first try and I love them even though I haven't had an opportunity to wear them outside so far. The head alone took me at LEAST 25 hours(probably a lot more) but it was a pretty enjoyable process,100% would do again and maybe even use those same techniques for paper "sculptures". I highly recommend them for anyone who has at least ok-ish crafting skills and PATIENCE, just don't forget to take precautions against mold (laminate it inside and outside with tape and/or wear a balaclava)👍

Heya! Paper fursuit maker here! I also FULLY line my paper fursuits with ducttape, and I laminate the outside with lamination tape. My lil brother once accidentally spilled a cup of water on my paper fursuit. Its fine lmao. No mold, no crusty spots, nothing. I also make the mouth open and i add extra ventilation typically in the cheeks. So yeah i dont really have any problem with mold, or it being hot for that matter.
Also now I have more experience, and the uneven part is so real lol Anyway.. way too much ducttape is actually pretty good to make it stronger and last longer.
Since I'm currently planning to make my own live filming, I want to make more furry characters but I'm low on time on making my own and fursuits are too expensive (since I already have my main 2.0). I just discovered this and wanted to make some for different character(s) made out of "paper."
I have a paper fursuit in progress and if you make them right they are pretty durable. I have mine sitting in a dry spot (to avoid mold) with four cats and they knock in down all the time and the only damage that happened is two bits of duck tape peeling up.
Just on the time aspect, yes paper fursuits are WAY quicker to make. Unless you’re cutting corners with your sewing, a traditional fursuit is a task that takes days minimum. A paper fursuit can be made in a few hours. I have made both before. My main concern regarding mould is with corrugated cardboard (the kind boxes re made out of) because they have air pockets trap moisture and hide mould. Card stock and paper is super low risk by comparison. Another thing to note is that tape will slow down how quickly a paper suit gets wet, but it also slows the drying process. As long as people are taking precautions and using safer materials like cardstock I’m not too concerned.
Hey bolt! A quick way to get around a balaclava pressing up against your mouth, is to get a 3 hole balaclava (like the Russians or the stock image burglars). Gives the advantages of a balaclava while allowing you to breathe. Or you could get something like those tactical ones which can have the bit covering your nose and mouth onto your chin. Anyways, have a great rest of your day! :3

Im not really a furry, but I think fursuits are cool. I do kinda wanna make one but my family doesnt like furries all that much, so I think it'd be suspicious if I had a bunch of foam and fur lol. I also can't afford foam and fur, and I have so much access to cardboard and paper so I might consider it.
I'm thinking this is also a really good budget way to practice building fursuits heads before actually buying foam, if you want to make a more traditional suit without spending $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just to get over the learning curve. Yknow??
Imma be real with you packing tape is not laminated. There is still minor holes that you can create and mold will get in. it’s paper yes they are cool and yes it’s a fursuit but people that say they are durable are silly. I think it’s worth buying an actual suit because you will probably save more getting from a new maker then having to remake a paper head over and over if you go out with it
most paper fursuiters don’t wear it to things like conventions or out in public. there isn’t a ton of wear and tear, and they are surprisingly durable. the only way i’ve had a head get destroyed was when i accidentally left it out where my dog could access and gnaw on it. rookie mistake, but i haven’t had to replace a head since.
@@cynthiabrogan9215 my main suit was less than a grand and is 4 years old and not any mold. It lasts WAY longer then a paper suit will. The difference is you can clean ur fursuit to prevent mold. With paper you can’t. Once it molds it’s done for. Lysol wipes will most likely just create more mold.

now I'm tempted to make a realistic papersuit just to push the limits of difficulty

I'm thinking this is also a really good budget way to practice building fursuits heads before actually buying foam, if you want to make a more traditional suit without spending $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just to get over the learning curve. Yknow??

Imma be real with you packing tape is not laminated. There is still minor holes that you can create and mold will get in. it’s paper yes they are cool and yes it’s a fursuit but people that say they are durable are silly. I think it’s worth buying an actual suit because you will probably save more getting from a new maker then having to remake a paper head over and over if you go out with it
most paper fursuiters don’t wear it to things like conventions or out in public. there isn’t a ton of wear and tear, and they are surprisingly durable.
the only way i’ve had a head get destroyed was when i accidentally left it out where my dog could access and gnaw on it. rookie mistake, but i haven’t had to replace a head since.
You know regular suits can grow mold if you aren’t careful right?

@@cynthiabrogan9215 my main suit was less than a grand and is 4 years old and not any mold. It lasts WAY longer then a paper suit will. The difference is you can clean ur fursuit to prevent mold. With paper you can’t. Once it molds it’s done for. Lysol wipes will most likely just create more mold.
@@Em0_cowboy homie I also make suits. You’re not getting mold out of foam either. Also Lysol wipes ain’t gonna work on a regular suit to kill mold of it’s already molded (source: that’s how mold works. Bleach on a wipe isn’t enough on a porous surface)

1) how durable is a paper fursuit, how long does it last without mold or breaking
2) how do you maintain your head base, aka avoid mould when wearing it in humid places
3) can they handle hits, or are they completely broken if someone falls down
and 4) if I make a base using papier maché, can I seal it fully or will it get mold no matter what
