Why Characters Do What They Do [Story Essentials]

  • I've seen so many loglines for great movie ideas, that still failed to express the chain of dramatic causation. So I thought I'd do a video about why it's important to include THAT particular element.
But before I make my point in this video, you should realise that I'm talking about the DEVELOPMENT LOGLINE. This is the sentence that sells your concept to a producer, manager, agent, etc. We are NOT talking about how you tease the audience to watch the film or show episode, which I would call the MARKETING LOGLINE. For that, there is no template, as the audience has no method in assessing stories. Whatever works!
So, with that caveat, my logline format goes:
When [a Major Event happens], a [Main Character] must [perform the Main Action].
(In the video, I incorrectly say "pursue" the main Action, but you can substitute Action/Goal there so it makes sense.)
For more on this, including examples, check out:
    loglineit.com/...
Or follow the link in the video to the TH-cam playlist about loglines.
    Enjoy the video!
Thank you to Mukul, Griffyn, and Felicia.
