Yeah cos they were poor as hell and only started modernising in the 1990s. Europe and the US had been modernizing for at least 150 years by then, if not longer, and that produced so many of the improvements China took advantage of. I.e. it's basically cheating. If there was a 100% tight wall between China and all of the west, they wouldn't even have motorways or old school wire phones. Or cars. Or electricity. Etc.
