Red Hot Rephased XS650 Engine Hugh's HandBuilt 277

  • This engine came to us as a bit of a problem engine really. Customer brought it to us, as another shop had tried to build it, and looks like they were simply in over their head. Things were shimmed wrong all over, the clutch was assembled incorrectly, the valves were hitting each other, the cam was too aggressive, shift shaft was binding in the cases, etc... We tamed it down a bit and brought it to life. Hugh's HandBuilt 277 Crank and Camshaft, oversize valves, 5th gear OD, all of our clutch tricks including a "7 into 6" HHB Clutch swap, 750cc Heiden Tuning Big Bore, Pamcopete 277 Ignition, HHB Permanent Magnet Alternator swap, and of course all of our standard rebuild tricks - enjoy and thanks for watching.
PS - don't mind the oil leak from the oil filter cover, the owner has a custom oil cooler that will be installed there - so I just used a junk cover here for initial fire.

We use those CV carbs for initial firing, we leave the carb type up to the customer. This PMA is the same type of charging system that most all modern motorcycles use, and is lighter than the OEM system and frictionless. We use a Pamcopete Ignition System for the ignitions, which is also contactless and runs all the way down to 6 volts - makes for a great Kick-Only engine and we can run batteryless if we so choose.. Not too shabby for an engine that came out in late 1969 - haha...

I've been in analysis paralysis for a while now as to what bike I wanted for a project. The Rephase of the twin totally sold me on getting an XS650. Soon as the right donor shows up I'll be sending you my crank and cam. Cheers !

Awesome engine, that thing sounds disgustingly smooth. I am currently saving my pennies for your rephased camshaft and cranks. I can't wait!

I cant stop watching this video! Well I've been watching all your videos several times through out the past coupe days, but this one in particular had me hooked. Motor just seems like it's ready to rip itself off that stand! One thing I know is I'll definitely be going the rephase on my motor.Wish I could build a motor like this but as most I'm on a budget and my mine focus is just too get it running and be riding it, but as time goes on to through more money in it. Anyways seeing what you guys do and the amount of great info you share on your blog on your website. I just wish I could spend time in your shop learning some of the tips and tricks first hand. Liking forward to doing business with you in the future and learning more from you on your blog and forums.

With proper jetting, plenty of people do... I am not a fan of cut-off headpipes, as the double wall pipes tend to rattle and make a ton of unnecessary noise... These are welded, and we only use them for initial test firing of an engine...

Pretty engine... Sounds great. don't understand ' rephasing ', gotta read about it...you seem to do good work. What sort of HP will one of these customized 650 engines put out ?

does the engine vibrate more than stock crank after the crank rephase?

Don't know if anybody answered you but the rephase actually reduces the vibrations

Leak from the oil filter cover, which was a beat up used piece we temporarily installed, as he has an aftermarket oil cooler setup that we couldn't run at the time without plumbing it... AND, it's in the description, you know, reading and all - haha...

Hugh Owings I do read stuff... usually haha not this time, as it was a lot of jibba jabbra to me so did not bother reading to the end (I only just bought my first xs650 in bits) - still a lot of research to do before it all becomes clear (and it is getting there). Was thinking of a full rebuilt of the engine during the project, but after I've dropped it into the frame (don't have a jig like you do here for your tests) and it started nearly first turn (after couple of bits mended on original wiring) and to my ear and eye worked flawlessly I've sort of put that idea away for later. What do you think, could it sound at least remotely similar to one of these mean machines You are building one day in the future (considering it being fully standard) ? Sorry for a stupid question, but I never even seen an xs650 in metal before buying it (and it's my first attempt in owning a full sized bike) - that much I fell in love with it when first saw it online (yes I am not entirely normal). P.S. there should be a video on my channel somewhere. What do you think, does it sound ok?
