After a successful maiden flight in strong winds I was confident about flying the Frobisher again in kinder weather. The first flight of the day went really well although did show the difficult ground handling characteristics. The second flight ended in disaster. Powered up after pointing into wind but even with rudder the Frobisher yawed around almost into down wind direction. I should have abandoned the take off run but foolishly continued and once in the air it stalled. I corrected but it immediately tip stall over the other way and crashed. A sad end to a beautiful model but hey...it's just a hobby !

I've had a few planes auger in at low speed on takeoff or climbing out of a touch 'n go where they just didn't respond the way I intended and the plane did a ground loop! Props to you for showing it and keeping a level head.
I'm so sorry for your loss, Dom. Better broken to bits than another 20 yrs in storage, though. The first flight was great!
NOOO! Sorry to say, but none of the passengers survived this crash. Seriously speaking, I don't think I've ever been more sad to see an RC airplane go down than I am with this one. Not only because she was 25 years old but because she was a very beautiful model airplane. It's been a long time since I've seen an airplane with lines and curves like this particular model had. Thanks for sharing and RIP to her. 🌹
The only potential disaster in this case would be NOT to fly such a beautiful airplane. That airplane was built to fly! Flying involves risk, but flying such a lovely airplane is worth the risk. Sorry about the crash!

it did look like from the first flight that it can't keep up with that high climb rate. bit underpowered for the asked climb, stall and finally overcompensation with partial stall recovery due to altitude loss - my opionin

Bad luck Dom, you really did try your best with the save. I felt that tense sensation you get when you see it going wrong. Once she was committed she was going in regardless. Well done for making her airworthy for a few flights at least mate, lovely to see her in the air.
And yet she flew so well the first time. I came across this on my feed. I'm normally watching RC tank's. So you tube probably decided to bung this one on it. Anyway it's such a shame that it ended for the plane like that. I have a 1/16 RC panther tank and I'm forever picking up bits of it afterwards. It goes like a tank just doesn't last like one. Lol. But yea. It's a shame that it crashed in end. I take it that it's not repairable in any way then. If so I guess that it's a new project then. Thanks for putting up the video. At least she had one good flight before disaster struck.
What a shame, but you did your best to save it. You have the right attitude , onwards and upwards.
I recall Chris Golds from years ago following his posts on RCgroups. He made electric powered scale planes that were meant to fly. I believe he also understood the reality of the hobby that they do sometimes crash. Great that the plane flew again after 20 some odd years. Unfortunate that it crashed but that is the part of the hobby. Cheers

Man I hated when this video came back with you by the wreckage, Beautiful plane in which I've never seen the model of or the real thing. It's tough when you destroy something irreplaceable like this one. I know I've done it to too many already!
Horrible situation. There were thermal clouds in the sky at the time, and there was a nice dry lot next to a lot of greenery. Perfect recipe for dust devil / thermal activity. I've had gliders get way out of whack down low, over grass fields like that from dust devil / thermals kicking up. You also said it was going down wind at the time, which was down wind from the dry, warmer lot where the dust devil would have started. Never know.
Might be wrong but on both flights looked tail heavy as fork took off like a bag of wet custard twitchy as hell... We've all been there

Feel your pain Dom.... but like many have said at least you got it going and had a flight on her. With a model this bueatiful and all the work that went into her.. that takes a lot of guts sir and you've certainly got them! Onwards and upwards and keep the vids coming please. Take care

That's the plan! Also got a Chris Golds Concorde. Needs work on the mains landing gear mounts before can try next flight attempt though. 1-2 months and we'll try to get that in the air.
That sucks😕 man I get bummed out when I crash one of my crappy low cost airplanes, never mind crashing something as nice as this!

What a shame looked great on that first flight.Maybe a touch tail heavy??? All part of the hobby.I crashed my Spitfire last week,broke into 3 pieces ,but its repaired and ready to go again.Shlt happens.Gotta pick yourself up and go again.
I'm very sorry for your loss. I must add, though, that from the very first flight video it looked to me that those tiny rudders had very poor authority. I think that, with the effort to make the model really scale, the rudders turned out too small for the real aerodynamic characteristics of the model, and the result was a bad lateral stability. Add the low speed at takeoff, and some crosswind, and it was just a matter of time for the model to crash.
That design takes me back to early New York, I Love Lucy, and Frank Sinatra.
Damn, so sorry to see this. I found it a little tailheavy in the first flight but that is only my own feeling based on the video.
It was build to fly, not to hang on the ceiling. It did flew. And sometimes dissaster happens. Happens to all of us. Those who pretend not, are armchair pilots or haven't been around long enough.

Well it is what it is, we all dumb thumb things into the ground either through not checking things or trying to get away with stuff. Part of the hobby and if there was zero chance of crashing it would not have the excitement that it does! At least it got one last deserving flight and shared with so many!
Hey Dom, ive been flying Rc for 30yrs….. believe me, we all still ‘err’ it’s just the human nature…. A lucky ‘get away with it’ is just when the ‘err’ occurs with a very forgiving aircraft…. Awesome video, awesome plane…. Great people…. Keep yr hands on the sticks and look at the sky…;) Ad.
Kind words Ad. I feel the same. Thankfully it's just a hobby. Can't take it too seriously. As long as we get enough enjoyment to cancel out the occasional disappointments then it's all good. Thanks again - Dom

Dam that sux Dom, such a great plane. I guess that would take some serious time and effort to rebuild. Like you said, it happens and at least you got a couple of good flights. 👍🏻
Yup. Multi-engine models are challenging at best of times. I'll put it to one side for a while just in case an experienced aero-modeller wants the challenge but I have my doubts. It's quite a big job.
Beechcraft used to market that they had the fastest retractable landing gear on the market. Those switchblades of yours had em beat. Sorry for the lose but at least you have some nice, beforehand video. We've all been there and are headed there again.
The model seemed a bit laterally unstable to me, prone to dropping a wing near the stall. With those somewhat narrow-cord wings, I wonder if the model had any washout built into the wings.
Such a pity. 😢 All part of the hobby though. Great footage though. Keep up the good work. 👍

Dom, stop me here if I have this horribly wrong, but it looks like the inboard motor on the portside, and outer motor on the starboard are in sync and at a healthy rpm. The other two motors seem a bit lazy. OR maybe the slow mo is playing games with my eyes??
I think that's just visual effect of the camera shutter speed Jacen. I checked before the 1st flight and they were all spinning relatively same. I kind of doubt that they would have been behaving differently for the 2nd flight but I didn't check so could be wrong.
sad Dom, seemed abit marginal on the flight, those long tapered wings are tip stally. your analysis is prob right tho.
Such a shame. I know it's too late for shoulda coulda wouldas but if only you had switched on the gyro and tuned it in the previous flight. It may have corrected on that take off and saved it. Or at least put it in level so repair would've been easier. Still one of those things. As others have said better to have got it in the air again briefly than sit on a shelf for an eternity

What a shame because it was a beautiful model designed and built by legend in the hobby - particularly with electric flight. It doesn't look a repairable project. As a very experienced modeller once said to me when I was starting out - it's a hard game sometimes. Perhaps I should join my brother and take up model railways :)
They often fly better after they're repaired!
Flying airplanes is something I had to come to terms with. You can keep them brand new, or you can fly them and enjoy them. Yes, its annoying to see damage on a brand new plane, or in your case catastrophic destruction, but like you said it is part of the hobby and im convinced that theres no better hobby out there

One thing I have learned in this hobby is you need to fly a scale plane scale. They do not fly like a very light wing loading sport model. Keeping it on the ground until it has reached flying speed is critical. Almost looks like you have some aileron mixed to the rudder. If you do I would suggest taking it out. I had a long time RC pilot who also flew CF104's tell me to just learn to move your thumbs. I did and it helps.
I would also suggest using all the runway you have. I also see that at my home field. So many flyers just pop their plane down in front of the pilot stations and take off. Your giving up half your runway should you need it. 3 most useless things to a pilot, runway behind him, altitude above him and fuel in the fuel bowser. lol Cheers.

what a disaster, a great plane, flown great in the air.
First flight: the plane was too slow when taking off. look at the slow motion, the ailerons are fully on the right. you used the ailerons to steer, or a mixer to aileron rudder.

Not by me. I lack both the skill and patience. If I find a skilled aero-modeller locally then they would be welcome to have it.

Not that I'm aware of sorry.
When close to the stall, lower the nose and correct wing drop with rudder, even with those small rudders, the propeller wash would have helped. the last thing you want to do is to try to pick up the dropped wing with aileron, however instinctive that might feel. I'm sorry your model was so badly damaged and hope you can salvage enough to build another.
if you dont fly then it just looks like a plane fly and be dammed well done

They make a needle valve so you can adjust how fast your air up Spring down retractable landing gear goes It's basically a bleed valve Works great on my 20CC Hawker seafury .......... that is a nice 4 motor electric

Sorry to see such a fine aeroplane in bits, it looked lovely in the air. Horrified to see you arming the model with your leg just in front of one of the props . I always assume that a model could go full throttle when armed ( It's never happened to me but it's possible).
Not with these ESCs. Would not arm unless throttle at idle.

When its travelling downwind the airspeed is not effected. Airspeed is airspeed. Completely separate from the wind speed.

Just sooo disappointing….never mind, she lives on in some good filming of previous flights however. I take solace in knowing it can happen to an expert too. RIP my Jetex Sea Vixen, my Pantom Mite control line, my Cambria Instructor, my FW190 and recent Radion Pro🤷🏻etc etc.
And that's why I'm glad I do film them Derrick. But yes, they all end up in a bin bag eventually. Didn't get enough decent flights though. Will be kicking myself for quite a few days about this one.

First part is a successful flight. Worth watching that.
That model was always going to be a handful, tip stall designed in from the original. It never looked ‘comfortable’ in the air. Never mind, move on.

@@EssentialRC Definitely will stay tuned. Looked like as your speed was low & you swung into that steep right bank there was no way to recover, tip stalls just above the ground always end badly 🤷🏾♂️
