  • RESCUED FROM 20 YEARS STORAGE ! de Havilland DH.91 ALBATROSS | RC Transatlantic Mail Plane/Airliner
    Another stroke of luck in acquiring this beautiful replica of the classic de Havilland DH.91 Albatross. Constructed by master aero-modeller Chris Golds many years ago and fortunately it did not need much work to ensure it was ready to fly again after many years in storage. I replaced the rudder and flap servos and added an SBEC so I could use a 3S lipo for receiver/servo power and step down the voltage to 6 volts. In the end the additional battery actually helped with achieving perfect balance. Up front I used a 3S5000 pack for the ESC/4 brushless motors.
    This flight went extremely well considering the strong wind. You'll notice how the DH.91 was bounced around by the wind. I'll be adding a gyro before it's next flight and also checking the tail wheel alignment because I certainly did not track straight on take off !

    Beautiful model, great to see her in the air again. Looks like a low wing loading, which is perfect for a scale appearance in flight. When the weather is calm, she will perform beautifully. Need another photo shoot!😁

    Dom that is great...and could not be kept by anyone better. Such a piece of history and wonderful to see it fly! I recently stumbled on a nice piece of RC history myself and its great to have things like that in your collection, and even better to keep them flying! Love to see the excitement you have for it!

    Chris Gold is such an icon in the RC game.
    I've met Chris a few times over the years, he is such a nice fella.
    Always took time to show a few of us around his models and answer any questions.

    That's a beautiful model of an equally beautiful full-size. It's just so sleek and elegant. You certainly did it justice. I'm surprised it's on 3S and not surprised, therefore, at its lack of power as you mention. I'd be inclined to go to 4S and prop accordingly for similar current to get more power (watts proportional to V^2). Of course there may be limitations to the prop diameter so it might need more blades and/or coarser pitch. Very brave (or foolhardy?) to test fly in such wind so credit to you.
    Chris Golds in a legend. I have his drawings for another de Haviland rarity, the DH71 Tiger Moth - not the biplane but a small monoplane of which only 2 were built. None survive - one crashed in Australia and the other was destroyed on the ground at Hatfield during WW2. I've cut the ribs so far :)

    DeHavilland really had something going for a while. The Moth, Beaver and Mosquito, the 91. All beautiful aircraft and extremely recognizable. Thanks for sharing Dom, this is a proper treat.

    Nice work Dom, balls of steel flying in that breeze. The vertical stabilisers look small, recon that’s why it needs a gyro more than most.

  • @kevintieman3616
    @kevintieman3616 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good job flying in this amount of wind, it looks like a light plane for its size which makes for a more challenging flight in these conditions.

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Very light wing loading for its size. Great for a calm day but not so for 20mph winds. But enjoyed the flight nonetheless. I learned to fly on windy days so don't really think anything of it.

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks...and no on the SR-71. Project abandoned for many reasons. Fun to assemble the foam air frame but converting it for RC would have been an enormous and high risk venture.

  • @carlbrain3758
    @carlbrain3758 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    does that really fly on 3s? 3s turning all 4 props on a model that size? How?
    very impressive just really surprised it's only 3s

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup and would be fine on that power on a calm day but still flew OK in that wind. Cruises around nicely. Doesn't really need more power. Does need a gyro though. Never had a model that needed it more.
