  • Emirates Sky Cargo Boeing 747-400 OO-THD DUS - Have a look at this stunning Take-off. There was a very strong head-wind and the plane was almost empty. This was reason why the pilot was able to leave the runway after a few meters. Quite impressive though!! The flight distance was just 120 miles (Düsseldorf - Franfurt)
Emirates Sky Cargo doesn` t fly to Düsseldorf anymore. It` s kinda sad because I was always impressed by these amazing early rotations.
    Camera used: Canon 5dMarkii + Canon 100-400

I had much the same experience several years ago flying in a Lufthansa 747-400 FRA/DFW with an intermediate stop in ATL. At ATL, there was a crew change, and almost all the passengers disembarked. Out of ATL, I was the only person in first class; there were two pax in business class and a smattering in coach. And probably almost no fuel for the 730 mile flight to DFW. The pilot put the pedal to the metal, and we rolled about five feet before rocketing into the air like a fighter jet. In my years of traveling world wide, this was one of the most exhilarating takeoffs I have experienced.

Once, as a pre-9/11 flight attendant, I was in the cockpit jumpseat of an empty 757 for a night ferry flight takeoff from MIA to Havana to pick up Cuban immigrants. The captain chose to do a full power takeoff. He set power before brake release and we were on the takeoff run for a few seconds, then airborne and what seemed like straight up! It was awesome!

Excellent video of an example of just how short a runway a 747 can takeoff from if it really had to -- such as when one lands at the wrong airport and must lighten up to take off from a 1000 meter or 3280 foot runway. Even figuring the 800 meters for the entire roll and some extra just in case.

    Sweet!
Some of those giant birds (AFR A340 & KLM B744) at SXM (Princess Julianna, St Maartens), even with somewhat full pax will purposely depart with almost fumes-only tanks just to make that required sharp right-hand departure. Then they land at some island airport like Pt-a-Pitre to fill the tanks for the long return to their Europe airport (CDG or AMS, respectively).
With proper trim for a smooth lift off, without tail striking, those experienced big-birders know how to do it right (and probably humming till after they've well on their way).
Those freight cowboys (dont know any air freight cowgals) are really crazy. I remember seeing a UPS 74F pilot make a short 180 degree on to short approach KPHL 27L. I couldnt believe my luck seeing that. Those were pre-cellphone & I dont recall seeing any of those large Bolex cams near me. I certainly didnt have mine with me. The FAA agent I was chatting with was high-fiving me with our good fortune to witness that feat. He is stationed at KPHL and told me that was his first 744 180 short approach landing view. We were like two kids watching some airplane acrobatic. It was wonderful! I was hoping there werent any other breathing critters, like horses or someone's neurotic kitty), aboard that UPS roller coaster.
In this capture it is too bad the videographer didnt have a wind-suppressor on his mic.
    Great vid however.

1995-97, SZB Int'l Airport: an empty 747-400 freighter (Japan Airlines) performed a short field take off & it sounded like holding take off thrust before brakes release.
Cool night with a storm approaching.
If memory serves me, the take off run was a mite shorter than this one & it climbed away steeper into the cloud base than any 747 I'd seen before.

is it possible ? yes , if airplane is not loaded , first this is not passenger airplane so there are no seats to add extra weight for airplane , so we can not judge until we know the configuration and weight and fuel weight , but generally its possible if we supposed that weight with zero fuel is 224.5 ton , the normal takeoff speed of boeing 747-400 is 160 knt , depending on newton laws its require 900meter to gain rotation speed , but in all cases rotation speed depends on weight and temp and altitude pressure of airport , and because we have no information about all of these we can not judge , but in my point yes its possible

    • @jordannet

Exactly as per the notes. Commercial pilots don't "hot dog" or (literally) "wing it". V1 and V2 are carefully calculated - before takeoff - based on prevailing conditions. Weight makes and enormous difference. The 767-300 I took from Vancouver to Maui needed a huge takeoff run due to the 6 hour flight time (=lots of fuel). The 767-300 I took from Toronto to Halifax (1.5 hour flight time) literally lept off the runway. It's all relative...

You're right, In fact it says -400F right above the pitot tubes, it's cleary visible @1:17. I've seen freighters with the stretched upper deck although they may well be ex-passengers converted. But I think the winglets are sometimes retrofitted, I don't know if that's an option on a 747.

When empty, those cargo planes can really get airborne quickly, almost like an STOL.

i think there was a very strong head wind ( nose wind ) can let the aircraft rotate faster than it should be

Depends on the total weight, if light, you can rotate early.

I never even knew that Emirates ever owned Sky Cargo 747s!

That was quick rotation but then again its a 747 baby. The best ever built.

The air cargo 747 lifted off right as it rotated so it did not rotate too soon. How to tell if a jet rotates too soon?? If it's drags the tail and goes off the end of the runway.

Yes Moeen I agree. the weight factor is a key point. And probably decides it.

Yes, winglets are sometimes retrofitted to earlier models, but you can still tell a -400 by the blended wing root fairings (and slightly bigger wingspan).

      tjf4375 haven't seen that retrofit.

Does the length of take off roll matter if the required airspeed is achieved early? Just wondering.

Very light and, as you can tell from the grass, a strong headwind = very short takeoff

i counted about 14 or 15 seconds from full thrust to actual rotation, that is freaking incredible for such a large machine!!SMFH!!
