I thought sort codes were public knowledge via the banks website, perhaps if the person is with a private bank it might not be
They are often confidential as it’s in there own databases depending if the bank is legitimate. On the other hand, telling someone your sort code through the phone is actually risky as banks never ask for sort codes unless you go to the bank.
