lol i don't know why they were so surprised? it's called a calculated risk -- she's an investor and entrepreneur... it makes all the sense in the world for her to invest in something while making sure she can make a way to profit off it.
it probably helps that it was a highly pulicized event, airing on national TV and youtube plus all the social media outputs. It's also a real place that now stands out in Seoul, made by pretty famous artists. If you pr things well, you'll get good results. I'd shop this place as the next big hot spot for tourists and influencers, and voila, you'll be all over instagram etc.
It sound appealing to people who are young like us, but I guess by the time you make it to "director" of a department, most of them have a family already, and i imagine it's not that easy to uproot your whole life and move to somewhere foreign
It’s also the responsibility, which tends to be quite larger when companies decide to expand to another country. When you go, you have to represent, the stress and responsibility tends to be typically larger- especially if the expansion of a branch is quite new. It’s like, making a mistake over there is suddenly magnified, since it’s a new branch.

As soon as a foreign office opens (which usually takes months or years), you start either vying for that overseas assignment or making it clear you're not interested (for example, by taking on big domestic projects). In fact, most people don't have as much choice as she gave her directors. Usually when you're there, your expensive residence, lavish lifestyle, (expensive) international school etc are paid for. Most of their kids are international school kids / third culture kids!
In big companies, whenever you branch out or a new brand is launched, its customary of senior employees to take control of the operations to stabilize it. In our company we immediately discuss (re:gossip) which boss will be reassigned as officers for the brand, new employees, where they will be relocated and how soon. For the highest positions they don't have the luxury of choice (that's how you know you are vital to the company), if you are given a choice, that means there's a bunch of you that are competent to do the job and you're just being considered first

Whenever company transfer employees they provide rent, company car & driver etc. The only thing that they've to worry is to stay far away from family and they'll have to spending more money on their daily food if they move to expensive countries. That's how it is.

I had severe Social Anxiety and New York was extremely Scary for me but you get used to it. You have to toughen up or else you'll get walked all over like a Doormat.
I understand why y of them wanted to go, first is a huge change and all of them seem to have families whether it is husband /wife/kids they need to discuss this matters with them cause they might want to travel with you or they might want to stay and you have to decide if you want to be so far from your family for an undifinite period of time. Also they weren't told if and how their salary would increase and how they would live there... If I was alone with not spouse or kids I would definitely go cause is a great opportunity.
