When the moisture gets around 50% the Lignin in the alfalfa starts sticking to the blower and the chute of the chopper. It won't blow near as far and it can plug the chute. A little water added to the windrow or to the blower will solve the problem.
Love your face and equipment footage at the same time. And would love to see tour of highland cow farm and dairy as well if possible. Great videos ❤Australia
About the camera shots question: Some of you is good because it shows the human side of the business, and some of the tech stuff just looking at the issues is also good. The variety makes us feel we are out there battling the challenges along with you. Hope that helps.
I really enjoy all aspects of your videos, and I really enjoy the video of the equipment and how you do such a great job explaining to us non-farming folk how everything works. You really have a knack for that and that is what had caused me to subscribe initially. On the other hand, I do like when you are in the videos as it adds and more personal and human touch to everything, so an even balance of both is my vote! And yes, cattle tour as well please! :) Hope you are feeling better!
I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure I was just watching the Farming 400 formula tractor series less than double digit speeds but absolutely enthralling round and round they go haha nice work Sir I always wondered what they kept in those bags & mounds with the tires. Heck yeah those highland moo moo's are super cool & I'm thinking anything farming related would be appreciated by the viewers of this channel. Thanks for the work you do good Sir we do appreciate it alot more than one knows, I surely do.
I'd love to see a video on the highland cow farm. Have Christopher tell us about them. My son spent two years over in Scotland and just loved seeing them.
@@RockyMountainFarmer That is excellent - demonstrates you guys really know what you’re doing. Your spud harvest was spectacular, reward for a lot of hard work and good agronomy.
The way you do grass silage is really differnt from over here in germany. Here almost noone uses a self propelled swather, they just use a big butterfly cutter. Also the rake seems rather small compared to the big circle ones used here. Also chopping is mostly done with self propelled choppers. Also bagging silage is rare. Most people use either a silage pile or silage bales. So its interessting to see how its done in america
You gotta see if you can put a speed up kit on the fan blower. I know on John Deere‘s pull type choppers they have a speed up kit that you use for grass and a slow down kit that you use for corn.
As a kid in Tyhee we were lucky to get a 3rd great crop. The Scot in me I would have welded a bolt or ready rod to the end of the rod that broke and put it back on. The highland cattle would be good winter content.
Is this alfalfa hay or another variety? I like the current mix of your smiling face and the machinery. I do like seeing how the repairs are made though. Really enjoyed the video and the tater was really something!
Just watching the silage coming out of the spout it looks to me that the moisture is low and is gumming in the spout liner. That is probably why the longer spout is more of a problem. I,m guessing the moisture is 60% or lower. Also the stage of the crop can also affect its blowability. I cut a lot of silage many years ago back in the late 70,s 80,s and 90,s.
Yeah, it’s probably a little bit too dry. The problem is when we get to this last crop it’s too dry for that chopper but it’s almost too wet for the bagger so it’s hard to hit a nice medium.
You mentioned the Highland "branch" of the family farming business, maybe something for the colder month would be an overview about all different aspects of the farmin and how it interconnects? On another hand: are there self driving choppers arround in your area? Her ein Germany Krone and Claas are the main vendors and pull behind choppers are not used anymore. This just on the interested side as the size of your opperation might be fitting for one of those (maybe only for testing if available...).
What if you tighten the bolt on those long bars with like 5 ftlb and put a second nut on as a lock nut. Maybe the nut pulling on the threads causes it to break but if you just make sure its a bit tight and not loose but secure the nut with another counter locking nut? Maybe less downtime on the rake then...
@@RockyMountainFarmer My theory would be this: Because if the bolt is tightend it causes the base to also get tightend against so flat metal with the hole. But I guess the bars are in constant movement which creates leverage and vibrations and on top comes the constant clamping force. The reason why I think the threads dont fail is, because they are supported by the hole and also under a force in one direction (tension) while the base has got tension on it and is then also shaken around. Maybe it would also help if you could get some vibration reducing device like maybe some rubber or maybe even just a spring washer and then also not have that much tension on it with the 2 nuts trick. But honestly it should be a part where the manufacturer should be responsible for designing it strong and testing it. Also all that I said is just my kind of thinking, Im not an engineer or so, just my way of an explaination why it fails...
Hi, doesn't the movement of so much machinery in the field crush and kill the alfalfa plants? Also, how does one of those sprinkler pipes with with wheels work? It doesn't look like a pivot either. Thanks.
Throughout the year, it does produce a little less where that gets driven on but not very much. What you were referring to is called a wheel line and they work just like a sprinkler pipe but they’re all hooked together with a motor in the middle so you start the motor and the whole line moves at once.
They are directional so they have to go on the right side or the left side. The hook at the bottom only faces one way. If I flipped it around it wouldn’t grab the hay.
I would love to see a tour of the Highlands and horses. I've been watching you for a while now and maybe I missed something, but I don't recall seeing any videos on the dairy farm. Is that part of your operation or is that another person's dairy and they just buy your hay? Keep the vids coming. :)

The problem with welding, a bolt to the blade is they have to be balanced. Otherwise, that would work.

There are a few self propelled choppers around they are just really expensive. I will try to do a cow video this winter.

Maybe the nut pulling on the threads causes it to break but if you just make sure its a bit tight and not loose but secure the nut with another counter locking nut? You mentioned you would plant potatoes in that hay field next year. Is that part of your normal crop rotation, alternating crops every year?
Yes, we have to alternate crops one for disease prevention but also it increases your yields
What's the connection between you and the dairy farm? Would like to see their operation too.
Dairy used to be a part of the farm, but my uncle bought it quite a while ago and now it is separate. We just haul the manure and grow hay.

They have been trying to get us parts as soon as they can
5th cutting is a giant pain to bail
Yeah, that’s why we decided to bag it
Any place on the tractor or rake to tie down one of those spare loops instead of having to come back to the shop
There probably is somewhere
@RockyMountainFarmer Just wondering if the nuts are being over torqued.
Unfortunately the quality of the metal these days isn’t even close to what it used to be!!! Thank you for sharing

Nice looking cooked spud :) Have you guys ever grown your own seed potatoes, or are they all bought from a specialist?
We buy all of our seed potatoes from a seed grower
I know where the hay goes…. But here’s an odd question, do any of your other crops ever get shipped by rail?
No, we have never shipped anything by rail except for I think our grain eventually gets put in a rail car
with that many acres to cut wouldnt it b better to have a self propelled machine for the silage
Yeah if they were more affordable
Edit...400 acres
How many acres do you have there? Love the channel
Yep 400 acres of hay this crop. All the other crops were about 260. Glad you’re enjoying the channel.
do you guys own / run the dairy farm or is that a partnership with someone?
