  • The final character reveal for A Very Vintage Halloween Clue Murder Mystery is upon us! Today, you get to meet Miss Scarlett from my Clue cosplay series.
    Sewing a vintage dress from an authentic vintage sewing pattern is no easy task. However, I show you how I scale my vintage pattern and how to conquer mistakes when they are made. Once the pattern is scaled up to size, I show you how to use the unprinted pattern to make this beautiful 1940's dress pattern. These can be tricky, but you too can sew any vintage sewing pattern. I will show you tips and tricks to help make it easier to understand how vintage sewing patterns work.
    Whether you call yourself a sewist, a vintage sewing enthusiast, a cosplayer or are just looking for some spooky Halloween content, this video has a little bit of it all! Come on it and join the sewing party!
    Vintage sewing pattern used: New York 707 (bust 42).

    If I may, I’m going to insert a word, to be said in the drag queen Tatiana’s voice: “Choices”. Absolutely love it. I think the bit I love best about your videos is the utter shade and sarcasm. You also make me feel a lot better about my own sewing errors and skipping important steps (that turn out to be most important later on 😂)

    Watching you adjust every pattern is interesting. Pattern or readymade, I have to adjust everything. I dropped 2 sizes and decided to make my new clothes, they will fit much better. Nothing straightforward because I thrift all parts. I have accumulated enough parts to get started, yay!
    Quilting does compete for time. Oh yeah cross stitch too. At least gardening isn't competing at the moment.

    even after the mask era, anyone getting close enough to notice an 8th inch difference in my shoulder seams is going to get the pointy end of my elbow in the closest, softest part of their body. 6 feet is still a good idea.

    Do you have any thoughts on if one tried to turn Flappy Bits like that into pockets?
    I'd want to place them over the hip bones - as you mentioned. And obviously they'd only really be good for flat things like a phone or thin wallet.
    I'm thinking a heavier interfacing, probably on the front, so you don't see the outline of whatever is in the pocket, you just get a bit of a bulge.
    I guess my concern, is if there's weight in there, that when you sit down, they're going to flip to the side and fall off of the thighs. I guess that could be rectified by tacking the point down to the skirt? But, that unfortunately means I can't make a belt and Flappy Bits as separate pockets which could be used with multiple pocket-less skirts. Safety pins?
    Ultimately I'm just going to have to try it. But any insights, are appreciated.

    • @StephanieCanada
      @StephanieCanada  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Honestly, I would use the flappy bits to hide the pocket. I would create new slots directly underneath them and use them as a “door to Narnia” situation instead.

    • @lynn858
      @lynn858 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

       @Stephanie Canada *Blinking* Well that's a solid idea that hadn't occurred to me.
      And, apparently, far closer to how the 1917 Ladies 3 or 4 piece skirt is done. Having only looked at the line drawing, I hadn't realized the line down the center is actually a pocket slit. So THOSE flappy bit pockets (which it isn't apparent in the line drawing even are pockets) didn't even work the way I was imagining.
      I guess I can't use "I need more information" as an excuse anymore. :)

    This will probably be a dumb question but are all the patterns from the 1940’s unprinted? And when did the pattern companies begin to print on them?

    • @StephanieCanada
      @StephanieCanada  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not a dumb question at all. Unprinted patterns were the standard until about the 1950’s. This is primarily because McCall had patented the printing process in the US and no one else could use it as he guarded it fiercely. Most companies were able to start printing on their tissue in the 1940’s so you start to see Simplicity adopt it first and the rest quickly follow suit.
