the difference between pro stock sticks and retail are for sticks pro players can choose custom curves they want different material in the blade and the shafts custom flex as well skates same thing they can choose different tongues different blades and holders
Oh I know. But given that it's accessible for people to buy pro stock online (prostockhockey.com, etc...), as well as things like jersey quality, I thought it might be interested for those that aren't in the know. Some may wonder whether it's worth it to invest in discounted pro stock. Just a more fleshed out breakdown of pro options vs. retail in a video.
For some items its perfectly fine to buy pro stock gear, and definitely can be a great value, mainly for things like gloves, helmets, pants..sticks and skates can be a bit iffy - one of the main reasons is what youd call "dressing" - which means you may find lets say a Bauer Vapor 1X stick, but its actually a Vapor X60 "dressed" with 1X graphics, and you actually end up with a stick thats nearly 5 years old but with the current flagship product graphics because of marketing and sales - most pro players youll notice in locker rooms dont always wear or use the most current gear, youll see players still wearing shoulder pads and elbow pads from 10 years ago that arent even made anymore, and other items that are "broken in" or "lucky" that they wont bear to stop using (Crosby still uses the same jock strap from when he was a teenager and has his equipment manager keep repairing it, theres a video out there somewhere on it) - theres lots of info on prostock stick codes to tell what actually is the model online in forums. Skates can be the same way, youll find plenty of listings for Bauer Nexus skates with a Vapor X-Rib mold pattern in them and so youre thinking youre getting a certain product but you end up with something that isnt the same as the retail version description..the nexus being a very wide fit normally but the specific prostock was built with a narrow vapor fit and dressed with nexus graphics on the outside of the skate and they end up not fitting you like they normally would in a store. Jerseys are an awesome example of the difference between 'retail/replica' and 'authentic/prostock' - ive got 2 different Reebok Edge practice jerseys - one bought from a store retail and one bought off ebay that was a game used training camp authentic and the difference is interesting how much more goes into prostock. I should probably do a video on it some time lol. But anyways, some products are safer than others, ive got some friends that will only buy prostock stuff and swear by it, but its up to you really I guess.
Tyler Dowd google "pro stock stick codes" and youll find plenty of forums and sites that discuss the breakdowns of each brand's codes and what the stick actually is manufactured as
Hey Chris, I think you should also mention the fact that any major hockey store with a pro shop or a store that specializes in skates will also modify off the shelf skates. For example I have a wide food and I bought a pair of Bauer N9000. I needed them a little wider and the good people at Pro Hockey Life were able to widen them as well as “punch” them out in certain parts of the skate where I needed more room. This was done with a special press that stretches the skate after they come out of the oven. The guy at PHL also told me that they can easily do this with more expensive skates because the have a higher quality of material compared to a lower costing skate. So it’s kind of like getting a custom fit skate from something off the shelf.
I truly wish this video and information was around when I was playing as a kid! Great video , I would really like to see a video on the information of 3D building of personal skates !! Thanks again great video!!
I lucked out when I got my CCM skates. But I'm a goalie and I need a very different skate than a regular player would use. I'd love to see a video on goalie skates and how to get a good fit. I've been retired from hockey for a while now but I still enjoy a drop in once in a while. I swear by CCM and I still have my old skates. (they are still serving me very well) Looking forward to more videos.
This is DEEP SCIENCE my friend, thank you SO MUCH!! P.S: this is where the expression " cheap skates" came from, someone who doesn't invest properly in his Hockey shoes...🤣🤣🤣
It would be awesome to watch you go through the custom skate option to include runners etc... I know you addressed the aftermarket runners in a separate video but if you can swing it, a video about custom skates from top to bottom would really be interesting. Thanks
Type in "dumpster fire" on youtube and that's what your true skates will look like when the rivets and coppers won't hold because the sole's rotted out in 8months
C.C.M. Canadian Cycle & Motors. Originally a Canadian company that made small gas engines and bicycles. Nothing to do with ice hockey. By the 1970s pretty much just bikes and hockey equipment. In Canada you wore CCM, Daust, Lang, and Baurer back in the day. Hockey sticks were Shurewood, or Victoriaville. And Jean Beliveau had more Stanley cups than Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Limeau, and Crosby combined. 17 in total. 10 as a player.
@marta green awe you poor baby, I make you cry. And you think you can bully people on here. Good luck with that. Now punch up this name. Steven aspenlieder. See me bench 315 pounds. Less than one percent of human population in all of history can do that. Judo is my second sport. I specialize in bullys. I look forward to meeting your big mouth. This is where you retort by saying something cute because this is your specialty, online intimidation. My specialty is in person reality checks. I prefer my specialty over yours. Now go on and show the world how you like to tell people what you can and cannot do online. I look forward to your response.
@marta green yes we get you are a punk who likes fo online bully people. However I am not making out what you are trying to say. I'm guessing English is not your first language. Try saying you want in google translate, then copy and paste on here so I can understand you better.
@marta green well that is 5 more than I speak. English, french and some espanola. However it was you who came after me, not the other way around. This is an open forum. Yet you think you can tell people what they can and cannot say.
great video....i use Eaton Makos which are discontinued I believe but they were good fit all around for me because I just continued up Easton line from all the Synergy skates....would love to see a TRUE custom skate video
Hockey Tutorial, Hi, I’m Brandon’s mom. I have watched your videos occasionally over the years. Now I’m watching on my son’s iPad! He and his brother are members of a special needs ice hockey team in California. Although there are hockey stores around, they are not very close to us, but I will travel to one (ie. Monkey Sports in Irvine, California) if you think it may be worth the trip. Can you do a video regarding custom skates? There are ongoing problems with severe pronation for Brandon and his brother. Also, Brandon’s 2nd toe hurts after practice. I Bought several pairs of skates. I also used braces for his brother, but they don’t seem to fix the problem. Even with professional orthotics, the pronation continues. With this video, you have convinced me that cheaper skates are not the way to go. But Brandon’s first pair cost $600, which is not cheap to me. I just think that I’m going about it the wrong way. If you can do the video about getting custom skates, I think that it will help me decide on what to do and how to go about it. Seems like there’s no easy choices otherwise. Thank you.
I'm no pro. I just like skating when I can but my ankles are fucked along with some other foot injuries. Would a custom skate help or be a waste of money? I usually just get a Bauer and tapenthe shit outta my ankles. Some input would be great. Thank you for such an informative video I'll be sure to subscribe and all the other shit too. Thanks again!
I can't understand why the manufacturers only distinguish between "D, E, and EE" respectively meanwhile between "tapered, regular and wide" instead of providing a quantified range in centimeters/inch for front foot, instep, heel and ankle circumferences!
I have small feet and got the vapor,I love them, however the padding on the heel is a little stiff and hurts after a few minutes. Should I make them again or did I get the wrong size?
Hey thanks for the video. I just threw away a CCM pair of skates that I had hardly used because although they fit well in the store they were painful to skate with. Im a recreational skater and casual player with a ratio of 2.6 and wide feet. Cant really afford too much ,so am looking to Nexus N2700. Any thoughts??
Great vid, as always. I'd like to share my personal experience. I reached out to CCM Canada about trying to buy some equipment that I couldn't find at several major hockey stores and online. NO REPLY. So I emailed and wrote a letter as well. NO REPLY. Unreal. I reached out to Bauer Canada about options for changing a part on my hockey skate after regular business hours and they replied back to me that night with all the details. Incredibly high level of customer service. So I sold ALL of my CCM equipment and replaced with a full Bauer set. Anecdotal experience only, but Bauer has their act together and CCM seems to have so much invested in marketing and sponsorship that they completely neglected the customer service aspect. Never touching CCM again...
@4:00....exactly how does the skates construction "adapt" to someone's foot. All of these skates are "bakeable" which allows the heated materials to adapt to the foot
Very important. Wrong skates can mess up your feet and your hockey career. This happened to me. I got calcium build up around my anckles that made it impossible or painful to skate. These were Graf skates. Also it is important to wear a size smaller skate or half size smaller.
You should have noted that goalie skate lines are not the same fits. Supreme goalie ~vapor fit (I fit vapor goal skates) but can't say the same for ccm skate line . I'm trying to play out and I bought the wrong skate fit (used). Most stores don't give a direct answer to the skates unless they specialize in goalie gear too.
Good video... One error though, when u say that bauer already has foot scanners in retail locations, and its something you expect to see from Bauer, Im sure you meant to say CCM.. Not being critical, just letting you know :)
@@TSmith13 Not what rolledupaces34 meant.. Both companies do have scanners yes, but in the video he said that Bauer has scanners in retail locations and it's something he expects to see soon from Bauer, but he meant to say expects to see from CCM considering he was being sized by CCM. Tom Smith, As for both already having scanners in retail locations, have you experienced them both and is one better than other?
Very helpful, have a 12.5 A width foot, just skate once a week for fun, and fitness. Age 61, I watched Lou Lamoriello coach at Providence. Bought a $400 pair of skates 5 years ago, awful, too wide, pinched my toes, put three inserts in to fill space. Bought a pair of CCM 44k Ribcore size 10, better but still fell movement in right skate. Any thoughts? Many thanks, Ken
Definitely interested in a video on your thoughts of a custom skate vs an off the shelf skate being baked and having problem areas punched out. I've always had some trouble finding skates that I *really* feel comfortable in because of bony bits of my feet which stick out a little bit. I find when I pull my skates nice and tight I get far better performance (as you'd expect) however the sides of my skates really press against the bony bits and it is extremely uncomfortable to skate in and when the skates are taken off can be painful as my foot readjusts to not be squeezed any more. This makes me sometimes not tie them up so tight so I get a bit of comfort, but my power is seriously impacted and my feet wobble in the skate a little bit, sometimes causing me to do a comedy slip up 🙄 I'd be interested in a video which might explain if a custom skate would benefit me or if other options might be available.
Ive returned one pair of skates, new ones are baked 3 times, punched 3 times, skated first time in my life just a few months ago, with constant pain, now the pain is tolerable , but seriously thinking about true custom skates. Stores of course want me to go with bauer or ccms off the shelf, but i dont know.
Hey, I hope I get an answer, it would be important to me. I have a Bauer Vapor X700 in size 12 and the wide EE. I have now ordered a 1X, from the same year, in the same size and the same width. Do you think he will sit just like my present one? I thank you in advance in advance for the answer.
Went skating for the first time in years on Saturday night, and remembered why I haven't been for so long, HIRE SKATES! No I have never played hockey or skated that regularly but I've now decided to buy a pair of skates for both me and my wife. The HIRE SKATES absolutely killed both of our feet and legs. It really sucks because we were meant to go to enjoy ourselves but it's hard when the skates you HIRE hurt your feet from the moment you put them on
I know the feeling and just threw a pair away almost new. My feet are sore. Need new skates but don't really trust the kids selling them . Ive read about Nexus N2700 and am hoping they will work.
when I borrow the free skates they feel fine when I first put them on but after just one lap my feet are aching, so how do I pick the right size at the store?
Here’s one thing to know especially if you’re a super antsy person and hate waiting to get on the ice: GET YOUR NEW SKATES SHARPENED BEFORE YOU GET ON THE ICE. I learned this the hard way.
I used to skate with figure skating shoe but this week I bought a pair of bauer s180. I took them out on the ice today and the first thing i noticed when i skate faster on the ice i hear a terrible crackling noise that i never heard of when i figure skate. It also felt like I was going over a bunch of tiny bumps on the ice. I had them sharpened at the store. What exactly could the problem be? any advice helps.
I'm a rollerblader and just got the Bauer vapour xr500s I love them, but as I'm a wide fit they're too shallow for me so I had to refund them. I can't find any UK website that does them in the double EE, and the supreme and nexus ones aren't as expensive as what the vapour xr500s are nor do I like the scheme. I'm a wide fit in Clark's shoes, but they don't have different colour schemes to make it known to the world I have wide feet and a high instep! Now every time I see the blue or yellow Bauer skates that's what I think. But I've ordered a size 7 now in hopes it will be a little wider, but the length might be too big. If ANYONE can link me a site that still has the inline rollerblades from Bauer in double ee width I'd be eternally grateful!!
I wish this had come out 25 years ago!!
I was going to "like" but noticed you had exactly 25 like on your comment on this video coming out 25 years ago and would rather marvel in the beauty of coincidence.

Do you think I could get a good pair of skates as a senior with an average build as a beginner/intermediate skater for under $250 USD.
hi I'm 36 would u say I'm too old to learn how to skate and learn hockey allways been fasinated by it
Never too late to start man. Earlier the better
Graffs were amazing for this
Went skating for the first time in years on Saturday night, and remembered why I haven't been for so long, HIRE SKATES!
Pkease do a video avout the custom skate
I love this channel, so does my 5 yr son
when I borrow the free skates they feel fine when I first put them on but after just one lap my feet are aching, so how do I pick the right size at the store?
Here’s one thing to know especially if you’re a super antsy person and hate waiting to get on the ice: GET YOUR NEW SKATES SHARPENED BEFORE YOU GET ON THE ICE. I learned this the hard way.
Would this video help me if i just want to buy good ice skates? Like i am not a hocky player
Could you please do a goalie skates video please
