"Almost all SETI searches to date have explicitly targeted stars in the hope of detecting artificial radio or optical transmissions. It is argued that extra-terrestrials (ET) might regard sending physical probes to our own Solar System as a more efficient means for sending large amounts of information to Earth. Probes are more efficient in terms of energy and time expenditures; may solve for the vexing problem of Drake's L factor term, namely, that the civilization wishing to send information may not coexist temporally with the intended recipient; and they alleviate ET's reasonable fear that the intended recipient might prove hostile."

John do you live next to a train station ?
You will NEVER find good cell phone footage of a uap because there are no cell phone cameras that will be capable of focusing on a moving object hundreds of meters away. My god this point gets mindlessly repeated over and over., just a little brainpower debunks that idea that somehow lack of hd video of a ufo means nobodys captured anything. Like shit, have you ever used a camera? of any kind? that shit takes a while to focus even when you set it up perfectly and point it at a goddamn stationary object. Thats where i check out im too annoyed for this shit.
@@craigthescott5074 Train crossing. They have to blast the horns at all intersections by law so drivers and pedestrians know they're coming through.
One key assumption was completely wrong. We are already pretty advanced with works on self-replicating 3D printers that can build a base on the moon using lunar regolith which is far more difficult than using Earth materials. And we are already close to figuring out project Breakthrough Starshot technology to send small objects to nearby stars in ~10 years time frame. A technologically advanced aliens would have NO problem sending a 1kg 3D printer to all the neighboring star system and crawl the galaxy.
Also, we should not expect to have high results UFO videos with modern cell phones. If that were the case, why do we not have a flood of high res secret military jets all over the internet? It may very well be that it's only the best current military equipment that is needed.
relativistic probes would experience the "headlight effect" of all radiation, transmitted from and reflected by the probe, being focused in the forward direction and upshifted into the x-ray and gamma ray frequency bands. So, relativistic probes streaming towards the earth at nearly light speed, would look from earth like a transient x-ray and gamma ray source -- to wit, like a GRB. Thus, relativistic probes would be easier to conceal and camouflage, by adjusting their speed and other properties until they were largely indistinguishable from natural background GRBs (although they might all come from much the same location on the sky).
Thank you John for all the videos you put out. I have been listening and watching for a few years now and am always happy to see you upload. Much love, cheers!
Wow, thank you

Just out of curiosity I went and checked when I actually subscribed and it was in March of 2019 :)
+1, John is my go to channel at bedtime for 5 years now. Thank you John!
“My dog and I have different interests, she’s interested in dog urine and I’m interested in SETI” I literally LOL’d 😂
😂😂😂
Ironically, did you know that dog urine is a kind of language?
@@u.v.s.5583excellent point. And a point both for and against the idea of being able to communicate with ET:
For: I can tell from observing my dog's behaviour that she's very interested in gleaning information from the pheromone signatures and other chemical indicators in the territory markings of other dogs in my area. I imagine she's getting a plethora of information about the emotional state and lifestyle of the other dogs, and then she's composing a message of her own and marking the same general area.
It's for all the world like humans reading a Facebook post and making a comment. The inputs and outputs contain a similar set of information.
I can understand the general purpose of that kind of communication, that's the For argument.
Against:
I understand her body language and facial expressions to a limited degree thanks to eons of co-evolution and directed breeding. Even after evolving from a common ancestor and sculpting dogs' evolution through breeding, we humans have, at best, a fairly decent idea what dogs try to communicate to us, and at best a rough abstraction of the communications they address to each other.
Achieving action and emotional comprehension with a completely unrelated life form may be beyond our ken.
The worst part is that while dogs are the most consciously co-evolved intelligence we share the world with, some pigs, birds, whales, and elephants, all seem smarter and to communicate in more complex ways (in fact, birds make far more effort to communicate on our terms than even dogs do) amongst themselves.
We have never been able to parse much native meaning from any of them (again aside from birds making the effort to use our language - perhaps birds would be great ambassadors to ET?).
It may then follow (in fact, logically, yes, it does) that the more complex the intelligence and communication methods, the harder they will be to comprehend...
Yes, that's unfair to his dog, she's interested in the messages in urine, probably not the urine itself. It's just the medium, like radio waves or laser beams, so perhaps they have more in common than he realises...
Only one of them passes the sniff test...
John, I'm still around 1/3 of the video, but there's another issue. If the aliens are more advanced they're going to have a better understanding of physics than we do. So... What if there are faster ways for communication? Or perhaps there are shortcuts, so you can go larger distances without actually traveling between them... I mean... What if the straight line isn't the shorter way?
Remember: we don't know everything. We think we do... But we don't.
Do we? Who has ever said we know everything? I've never met that person.
I have to agree, the assumptions made are from within our current (see: limited / incomplete) science. It’s possible we’ve got everything right, and are the smartest intelligence around, but that’s almost certainly not the case.
@@DrMackSplackemNor have I heard anyone seriously claim that
@@DrMackSplackem People don't necessarily say that with those words, but they behave like that.
@@MCsCreations No scientist believes that, they'd be out of a job if it was true. All physicists will tell you about the gaps in physics such as the quantum gravity problem and as for the other sciences, new discoveries are being made every day.
Wow Gertz has really thought a lot of this through. Great interview! Very based in reality, including the speculation.
yep, that was my feeling also. Bright clear thoughts about issues which I didn't even think were important before this
Agreed but the discussion begs the ultimate question, how do we respond? Even the smartest most brilliant humans among us don’t seem prepared or entirely confident on how to interact with a super advanced intelligence, not only how to respond technically, but what to even say. What do we say? The guest on this episode ultimately resorted to “let us repair your broken probes”. A fair offer but resort to subservient action which may be nowhere near what they’d even want or care about. It’s a really tough and humbling question to contemplate. How would you respond to an alien signal? What would you say? What should we try to communicate?
It’s wild to me that myself and everybody else we all spend so much time contemplating whether or not advanced civilizations might exist elsewhere in this gigantic cosmos and the technical problems of how to discover them and how to detect their signatures and how we can respond. But there’s so little talk about how we respond. What do we say? How do we say it? I’m hoping the general conversation moves towards that because it’s worthless to establish contact and have absolutely no meaningful plan for what happens next, besides listen to our cool classical piano music and let us shine your shoes and repair your space probes. I mean common. I was disappointed all this chairman of SETI had to say was ‘let’s trade! We’ll repair your probes!’ That’s our response as humans? I mean it’s a fair offer and response, but… what do we want? What do they want? There’s got to be more than that
So many ideas. So little time. Every two minutes he throws out an idea that can be the core of a creative alien-centric sci fi novel. Easily one of the most inspirational guest you have had for a long time -- and you have had ONLY inspirational guests, so that is a high compliment to John Gertz.
I LOVE John's take on human-dog relationships and the different modalities we use to sense the world around us. I think about this sorta thing all the time and it's refreshing to hear such an academic take on the subject. This channel is just the best XD
One of the most thoughtful conversations on contact I have heard. This subject needs careful consideration!
Thanks to both John's!

Excellent John as usual
I feel like the Drake equation was never meant to be a rigorous thesis, just a tool to convey an idea/concept. As far as i know there's no serious science that depends on it.
Yes, it wasn't, it's a thought experiment that variables can be filled in as time goes on. By its nature it isn't any kind of thesis, it doesn't make predictions.
Most science is just a thought experiment and actually real science

Good "Down to Earth" guest... His international treaty statement is so right on!!
Fascinating, as always! I have no idea if SETI will ever yield any fruit but these questions are the most important ones that humanity could ever face.
They already have their conclusion because of wasting years of searching
Very interesting interview, points all well made. Disagree about his views on UAP. Could UAPs be the very probes he has been talking about.
Brilliant point.
We have 100 years of technological development, and think we can determine how other species would fly around? We are toddlers on a 3 wheel pushbike, look mama, no hands !!
We have nothing without Thought. Maybe we figure out first what WE are, and what Consciousness is. We´d advance rapidly.
I think this was my absolute favority up till now. It's always a pleasure to listen to somebody with such clear thinking (on his feet also). Reminds me of a very smart, edgy but sadly passed away british author/journalist

Great guest. I think he is right that interstellar travel by manned vessels is probably impossible which is saddening. We can wave hello, but we cannot ever show up for their Thanksgiving dinner in some other constellation. Imagine the desserts we are missing!
Nothing is impossible if you don’t think that way. Only losers think anything is impossible
It’s Thursday! Yay. Another awesome video John. Thank you
The data about our history that probes might contain has been a dream of mine since I was a kid as soon as I learned that a civilization might be millions of years older than us.
Quite strange that on the one hand he says we'd be like Hittites being oblivious to tech with greater reach than arrows if we thought ourselves safe from alien weapons, but on the other hand he thinks interstellar travel is unfeasible and his answer to the great silence is personal incredulity about the ability of an advanced civilization to solve the problem of making a space probe via space mining. (Not that Von Neumann probes themselves are necessary for interstellar expansion anyway)
His Fermi paradox solution directly contradicts his earlier point about not underestimating alien tech or problem-solving ability, especially if they've had more time than us.
Very intresting point of vision John Gertz has , who almost has the same name as myselfs ' John Geerts'😅

This was a surprisingly inspiring interview, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oo. Cool thumbnail.
awesome as always
Wonderful interview. Thank you!
I think crewed vessels between worlds is possible, but within limits. Flying across the galaxy, certainly not, but if there's a star passing through the Oort Cloud with a halfway decent exoplanet then maybe future humans would send a colony ship a light year or so. Even at 1% the speed of light you could make it in under 100 years, which is just about within a human lifetime even now. Ok, 100 is a very old human to be sure, but medical technology is advancing and even now a handful people have lived past 120. Who knows, maybe 100 is the new 40 in 2300?!
Yes. And I think we could get much faster than that. 20% light speed at least. And there are multiple ways to neutralize impacts from going that fast.
Because why? We can't do it? The ego on these earthlings
With trans-dimensional travel, you could get anywhere instantly.
Thank you. This episode was stunning.
There is is, my good night story. Happy New Year!
8:03 unless someone puts a literal map on the probe as in the case of the voyagers...
That train sound in backround is awesome. The KLF.
I'd like to point out to your guest that he is an example of a self replicating probe (at least half of one). 😊
Buuuuuurn
We don't create exact copies of ourselves though do we or we can't travel across the galaxy.
If aliens learned about us from tv and youtube we're in Big Trouble.
Oh hell no, they won't mess with the planet of Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Will Smith (he can fly their ships), Capt. James T. Kirk, nevermind the Borg... no, no... thinking about it, that may be why they've left us alone! That, and the nightly news. They don't want their kids anywhere NEAR us.
Not to mention Mel Gibson, obv. Nope, they're keeping arm's length
TV waves of Gilligan's Island are travelling away from Earth at the speed of light, now occupying a sphere 55 light-years in radius. We can't tell the Galaxy, "Never Mind!"

Amazing conversation. This dude was a great guest
We thought so too!
I can really recommend to invite Kevin Knuth for an episode! So far one of the best explanations of UAP behaviour I ever heard.
Kevin is a genius.
For the same reason that it will be all but impossible for us to decipher the linguistic communications of an alien being, it will be all but impossible for aliens to decipher our linguistic communications. I never cease to be amazed at the fantastic thinking of futurists like your guest on this point. That said, I love your channel, John, and though I have almost never commented, I've been a loyal subscriber for many years. Keep up the good work!
All it’d take is aliens to discover Sesame Street where there are pictures with words to kick things off in translation.
@@elissitdesignUnless they communicate through tentacle sign language and don't even have spoken or written language. They might not have ears. Speaking might be completely foreign to them and extremely difficult to decode.
@@elissitdesignthey mistakenly think we are a race of puppets where humans come and help us. And we use commercials to entice more humans to teach and sing with us.
If there was a probe in orbit analyzing all our communications, I think they could do it. It would soon become obvious that we primarily use visual and auditory communication and the frequency ranges we use. Visual depictions of us would help to illuminate our sensory modalities. From there it's just looking for patterns and correlations, which a powerful AI could do. It would likely be able to understand that we were using a base 10 mathematical system and that script correlates to vocal sounds, and just keep refining from there. I think we could do it if we had a probe around an alien world and these are more advanced aliens looking at us.
Militaries are pretty good at cracking codes that are designed to confuse. Cracking language, a code that is designed to communicate, is comparatively simple.

such a fascinating guest!
This is definitely in my top 5 favorite event horizon episodes.
What did you like most about it?
@EventHorizonShow, for me John your question this episode about our reaction plans in the event of extraterrestrial contact is extremely important, maybe more so than the discovery and contact itself, and has also received surprisingly very little attention in discussions over the years.
Who ultimately has the right to speak for us as a species? And the authority and power to decide humankind’s action plans and “next steps” for disclosure to the public of ET contact and humankind’s response to that contact?
Please continue to ask your guests this important question and consideration going forward, and thank you for asking it and the great work you do!
@EventHorizonShow, even the smartest most brilliant humans among us don’t seem prepared or entirely confident on how to interact with a super advanced intelligence, not only how to respond technically, but what to say. What do we say? Your guest on this episode ultimately resorted to “let us repair your broken probes”. A fair offer but resort to subservient action which may be nowhere near what they’d even want or care about. It’s a really tough and humbling question to contemplate..
What if they don't care about us at all but have communication within their own solar system or across several systems with their own planets, ships, orbital stations, moon outposts, etc. Could we detect that if it exists, but isn't a signal aimed specifically at us?
Cool question. I'd like to know as well.
If the aliens firmly believed (for reasons of their own) that they alone were intelligent, then they would make zero effort to avoid eavesdroppers. I think accidental signals ae the most likely.
Short answer: incredibly unlikely we could.
--> the signal path from origin-to-desto would need to be 'pointed' head-on at us...
Even so, the precise time our planet is in particular position/aligned w/ both their origin/desto would be vital depending on how far away their desto system is.
--> The signal would need to be 'obvious' and super powerful. It'd need to be discrete patterned modulation (AM/FM);
IF it was a signal patterned into something like a star's (otherwise 'natural' emissions), OR if it was inverted modulation (IE modulated pattern of 'missing bandwidths' amid an otherwise broad band emission)...We'd 100% miss it for 'natural' phenomenon, or not even be looking for it (currently, as is case of an inverted modulated method).
--> The signal would need to repeat some parts of it (so pattern recognition can at least recognize that even encoded it'd be repeating some portions) AND the signal duration has to be long...Ideally hours, if not days-to-months). Short-burst, short-message, encrypted messages? We'll miss them.
It would depend on how close they are. If they were close we could detect their leakage but if they are far it’s unlikely.
It more likely we will detect a Technosignature in an exoplanet atmosphere with our next generation space telescopes. If I was a betting man that how I think we find the aliens. Detecting CFCs in an exoplanet atmosphere is just as good as a bright and repeating radio detection. The good news is that JWT can potentially make that detection but I say we need to wait for the next generation of space telescopes
We're listening in Light/radio, neutrino, and gravity. Them Alien's need to step up to be heard.
A probe doesn’t need to have a large transmitter. It could use some sort of passive system akin to Theremin’s “The Thing”. The other civilizations gather information from the probe sporadically using a signal that causes a feedback resonance in the probe. The active transmission device may move from star system to star system gathering information on whatever time scale is profitable for that network. Putting a transmission system on each probe would require a power source (or power gathering mechanism) and various other ancillary systems. Probes would take significantly longer to send out with every extra nanogram of mass. It makes the most sense that probes would not have active transmitters.
we fight each other, companies and money are ruling the planet - how can we ever agree on what to answer?
Man, I really love this guess, John Gertz. I pretty much agree with everything he discussed. Hope JMG brings him back for another discussion. Great episode!
Fascinating perspective 😊
JMG: I have found the the closing music of your videos wake me up when I use your videos to help fall asleep while learning. Has anyone else experienced this? Maybe a change to the sound or volume at end of videos. Thanks.
Gertz' model of ET choosing to employ interstellar probes and communication nodes makes perfect sense. The probe can gather data for thousands or millions of year, and safely transmit information about Earth back to home. Also, ET prevents others in the Galaxy from knowing the location of its home base . Probes are cheap, and can travel at 1/100 the speed of light, leisurely arriving at habitable planets. Indeed, we humans are sensing probes, such as Voyager I and II. ET would do the same.
I think as we expand into the galaxy we will find archaeological sights of extinct alien civilizations. The chances like this guest stated of two civilizations being around at the same time and close enough to communicate with each other is very unlikely. The only exception to this would be if we could prove worm holes are possible.
Unlikey why is that. Because humans think that ??? We know nothing but pretend we do.
@@i2308Matt it’s a pure numbers thing. The numbers are there but because advanced civilization’s probably don’t last forever you have to be around at the same time and within reasonable distances from each other to ever have contact. 13.8 billion years is more than enough time to evolve a civilization the problem is having two at the same time.
Thank you for the great videos.

Wow the METI guys need a chance to debate (defend) themselves. Perhaps we need a debate between METI and John Gertz. This was a great episode… but a debate is needed in the future.
Wonder if radio signals is a bit ‘yesterday’ for an advanced interstellar civilisation? I suspect networks and relay stations might be a little out of date too?
Did like the reference to dogs world of scent though! Reminds me of Children of Time by Tchaikovsky where Spider like beings don’t understand why humans can’t learn to speak in vibrations…
That was quite the gear shift!! 😂 Very cool though. Great interview
The protomolecule from The Expanse wasn't good or bad it just didn't care where it paved its galactic highway. How would humanity handle something like that?
There are so many paranormal stories. So many cryptid stories. I’m very skeptical of such things. But I really enjoy wondering “what if?” What if some of these stories are real? And what people see is just a glimpse of some highly advanced alien technology. That we can’t even begin to understand… It’s fun to ponder such things.
Imagine if they sent a probe here waiting for AI to be “born” just waiting for the signal from the AI saying it’s here
The thumbnail of the video is so cool.
If there were lasers being beamed at our star, wouldn't we be able to detect that?
The probes could utilize a mesh.
17:15 with the number 2 pencil talk, fascinating, it brings up how amazing our life in itself is, and we need to remember that occasionally. And saying we’re so vile, compare us to the jungle and even to plant life competition, it’s a jungle out there, sure it can be better, but it can be much worse as well
I'm still gonna call it the Fermi Paradox. But damn The Great Silence is an awesome name tho 😤

Great guest, great interview.
Thank you John!
Just looked up how many one meter optical telscopes there are in north america, wow, if they all were combined up on one computer control program and aimed at any given star, would combining their images improve resolution?
It's not my expertise but from what I remember about interferometry there is a point at which the precision needed for many small collectors means you then must take into account very small seismic factors, etc, to such a degree that it becomes exponentially more difficult than coordinating a few larger ones. It's not impossible, just really hard, and more so the further they are from each other. The benefit is that while you only collect as much light as the total area, you get the resolution equal to a mirror/lens of the max distance between them (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).
With interferometry you need to know the distance between the telescopes to a fraction of a wavelength. That is extremely hard at optical wavelengths. I was surprised to learn that there were a couple of telescopes next to each other that were doing it (in Chile I think.) It is a lot easier at longer wavelengths, such as radio telescopes.
Thanks for another wonderful video, what an interesting guest listening to shows like this, you remember there is a place for really intelligent content on TH-cam & this is definitely the place. Thanks again. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤❤.
What about the black knight sattalight if you believe it is there?
Do you think it may be a probe?
I really enjoyed this conversation! His views really made a lot of sense, very logical way that aliens may proceed.

Great video and information !
1:12:27 every single form of life we are aware of engages in some form of warfare. Even the plants and trees attempt to take over resources used by other plants and trees.
The whole idea that any intelligent life we find out there would be benign is moronic.
This was a fantastic discussion. Thank you for putting it together.
For all the guest’s fairly deep thinking on the subject, he is painfully behind the times.
That intro song sounds so epic!!!
Hey, telescope questions for anybody out there with one. I haven’t had one in 30 years. And back then 10 year old me just flew by the seat of his pants. If I sight in my latitude, should I paint a template of the space to keep it consistent for when I move it back inside? I didn’t spend the money for one that finds stuff automatically off your cell phone, though maybe I should have. Any personal input would be greatly appreciated. It has some instructions for sighting with it, but the language is…vague at best.
How do we figure after the 5 mass extinctions? Ya'know remove or add one & no us?
Great video.
Has anyone in the audience tried to video or take pictures with their cell phone camera of a plane traveling at high speed? I have. It comes out shaky. It comes out grainy at night. The distances bleed out detail. It’s waaaay harder than you might think.
Some original thoughts on the matter. Or atleast I have never thought or heard of these things before. Humanity should give very serious thought to these issues.
Fortunately, the discussion was a lot less scary than the graphic pic that opened this episode!
Great show
Once communication has been opened then the alien A.I. would then ask for assistance to construct a Stargate or portal mechanism, imparting knowledge to enable and facilitate the construction...
The idea of self-replicating probes...I'm having difficulty understanding the point of that. Please say more about it in future episodes.
Also, I don't want to seem tin hat-ish, but aren't crop circles of very complex design a possible form of communication by entities from elsewhere?
If the probes are indeed in our Solar System; and in a tight orbit around the Sun; we certainly ought to put in more effort into finding them. What would the trick be in "awaking" such a probe? And it's disappointing to think the WOW signal could have resulted from someone playing with an early cellphone near one of the Big Ear's lobes.
Would awakening a probe = springing a bear trap?
Fantastic interview, John! Thanks a bunch!!! 😃
Lots of things to think about right there!
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Interesting take. I think its a good idea to have policies in place. For everyones flapping and panic about the end of the world. We've likely already done 800k years in this form...and we'll continue on. Masters of adaptation, physical hardship and suffering, experienced or enacted. We'll make it until the sun eats the planet as long as the earth doesn't snow ball on us again.
16:50 I really disagree with this point. You drop a seed in the dirt, it starts extracting material from the ground, and the air, a plant forms, it bears fruit and produces more seeds.
I can easily imagine an advanced alien species with von neuman probes like this. Self-replicating. You drop their "seeds" on an asteroid or a planet surface, and it automatically extracts materials and builds a probe that produces more "seeds".
