A RARE PAIR OF 12-BORE TOPLEVER HAMMER EJECTOR GUNS, serial no. 15936 / 7,
for 1897, 29in. nitro chopperlump barrels (No.1 with some pits), ribs engraved '1', '2' and 'J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL.', 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. true cyl. and 1/2 choke (both), carved percussion fences, rebounding back-action locks with central side nails, dolphin hammers, reverse manual safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, best fine border and acanthus scroll engraving with floral bouquets, the underside engraved 'PURDEY'S PATENT', retaining traces of original colour-hardening and finish, 15 1/2in. highly-figured replacement stocks, weight 6lb. 13oz. (No.1) 6lb. 13oz. (No.2), in a brass-cornered leather double guncase
Provenance: The makers have kindly informed us that this pair was completed in August 1897 for Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson as a pair of back action toplever hammer ejector game guns with 29in. Whitworth steel barrels and intercepting safeties.
Sir Spencer Pocklington Maryon Wilson (1859 - 1944) 11th Baronet of Eastbourne was born in July 1859, and succeeded his father around 1898. He was a Captain in the West Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. He resided at Charlton House, Greenwich, and owned Fitzjohns near Rugby. He was a member of White's Club.
