  • If your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes they will need treatment for the rest of their life. You will need to keep their blood sugar level at a normal level. This is done by administering insulin injections; controlling their diet and their exercise.

    These videos have helped us a lot. My husband gives Floyd his injection, its a bit of a learning curve. He had his fifth this morning and we learned that it's best for me to stay out of the way, I think he feels threatened if he's being held. Also, I think its extremely important that you make sure you are calm. I suppose every dog is different though. It was a terrible shock at first but five days on and it's just become part of a normal routine now. Good luck everyone 🐾

    I’m really upset after watching this and a previous video from this vet about diabetes. My dog was diagnosed last week, he’s old and in poor health and I questioned whether it was fair to put him through treatment, or kinder to make ‘the’ dreaded decision (euthanasia). I was told by the vet it was no big thing, which made me feel awful that I had even considered having him put to sleep. It’s been an awful week, the practice had a burst water pipe and they had to abandon his glucose curve mid morning, but it was done today (they did suggest I go to a different vet and fork out again for the consultation and blood tests but I couldn’t afford another £350).
    I am being made redundant and have secured a new job in a hospice, but it’s 13 hour shifts and my mum (who will have my dog when I am at work) says she won’t do the injections. I was not expecting the strict 12-hour spacing, nor frequent vet visits, and the costs are mounting (vet told me circa £70 per month, but I fear she didn’t include the monitoring visits in that £70 guesstimate). My dog is so stressed at the vets. Now he’s gone through all this, I am seriously thinking it wasn’t the right decision as I cannot achieve the strict routines described, which means I won’t be able to achieve good glucose control and he will be unwell - and I am really worried about the finances.

    My dog has just been diagnosed with diabetes,
    This video is very helpful. Thank you.
    I have no problem with the things in this video. He is my life & I will do anything for him.
    Also, if you are watching this, definitely check out the 'how to inject insulin' video (I have already). I can not thank the PDSA enough. They are wonderful & I will be checking my bill and giving as much as I can afford to cover the amount, I don't need that 'luxury' (although I don't have many) so much anymore, I'd rather have my friend & help the PDSA with the treatment they kindly give...

    I know this video is a couple years old but on July 19, 2022 my 12-year-old Chihuahua Macy got diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Being already disabled myself with autoimmune diseases it’s been very hard to find information that I can print out and I’ve been reading everything I built a finder with 16 dividers and I document everything she does on the chart But being that I am disabled and now she’s disabled it’s so much more on me.
    Forget the fact that the vet diagnosed her gave us a box with needles and one box insulin and sent us out the door with nothing but the receipt for $1100. Needless to say I’m suing them.
    Everything I know so far about diabetes and keeping her alive and diabetes managed I’ve had to research, Read ., Comprehend and put into practice because I’ve been left to do this alone with no veterinary support.

    I just want to add that I think the reason you 'll often see directions to give your dog or cat his shot shortly after eating is because of the risk that they don't eat after the injection, or that the vomit the food up after eating.

      Yes… that is correct. I am giving my dog insulin during the meal or after but every 12h. Dont make mistake like l did l used to give her a small portion of food like bone … between 12h window… DO NOT!! They should not eat anything between 12h window. At least this is from my experience. But l would suggest make a list of questions and ask your VET so you can get correct answer.

      Hi there, Annette! Most well managed diabetic dogs that respond to treatment have long, happy lives. However, it’s important to be aware that treatment takes a lot of hard work, commitment, lifestyle changes, a strict routine and regular vet visits. In humans - VItamin D and carnivore diet is helpful - what about for dogs..?

    • @pdsa
      @pdsa  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks very much for your question around the best diet for dogs with diabetes.
      Certain foods are better for diabetic dogs because they release sugars slowly and so help to avoid blood sugar spikes- speak to your vet about which food is best for your dog and always take vet advice before changing your diabetic dog’s diet. Use lots of fuss and play as reward instead of feeding treats.
      Vitamin D is a vital vitamin for dogs and there is some research to suggest it may be supportive in the prevention of some diseases- though this isn’t proven. Unlike us, dogs are not able to get Vitamin D from sunshine but have to get it from their food. Feeding a complete, balanced diet will ensure your pet gets the right amount of vitamins and minerals- additional supplements should not be needed.
