  • This video tutorial is aimed at English singers of French classical art song or Mélodie. It introduces the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet or IPA and goes through all the French vowels with a description of how the vowels are used and what makes them difficult for English speakers. It forms a part of the support material provided by the website www.melodietreasury.com.

Every time I need to sing in French I come back here. So incredibly helpful!

Very helpful to me. Despite having had Pierre Bernac's book, this makes it easier to learn Thank You.

Bernac is wonderful, and an irreplaceable link to Poulenc in particular... I was taught by a couple of musicians, a singer and a pianist, who were very close to him. As such I would call my self a devotee... but I am lucky to have technology to support my work!.. thanks for the comments.

À number of years ago I went on a course run by Robin Bowman who worked with Bernac. My husband taught French and since his death I have been continuing my study of the French language in an advanced course with Alliance Francaise. My presentation yesterday was on le chant Français so I'm "in the groove" and keen to improve my pronunciation further in spoken and sung French. Our tutor is very good and keen on exact pronunciation. Having found your channel I shall do more practise! Thank you for your very helpful detail

This is only for the traditions for classical French singing... it is not the way one speaks in day to day language.
